All The World's A Stage Tour
Title:
Thank You For Your Warm Welcome (CD) Date: 6/4/77, London, UK. Label: Unknown Source: Audience Quality Rating: C |
|
|
Description: This is Rush's first ever performance at the Hammersmith. The quality here isn't very good at all, so I can only recommend it for real diehards.

Live At The Capital Theatre (DVD) Date: 12/10/76, Passaic, New Jersey Label: Unknown Source: Pro Shot Video Rating: B+ Audio Rating: B+ |

Description: I'm adding a DVD to the ATWAS tour section? I seem to be awake, can't be a dream. Anyway, yes folks, the day an early Rush gig is unearthed on DVD has arrived. At this point the band is still an opening act (Foghat this night), which is why we only get a 40min set. Regardless, it's unheard of nowadays to find any complete shows from this era. The footage here is black and white as you can see from the screen capture above. The lighting is a little dark, but overall, not a problem. The picture is fairly clear as well. There is a timecode present and the words ME-48 just below center on the screen, but neither really distract. As for the performance, the boys are smoking here. The still pictures on the "All The World's A Stage" live album come to life when you watch this...a real treat. One other note, Neil doesn't get too much camera time. However, if you're fan of early Rush, this is the one you've been waiting for. NOTE: There is another version of this show called "Caught In The Act" which has the timecode and "me-48" blurred out and darker video - not recommended.

Out Of Hiding Date: 12/10/76, Passaic, New Jersey Label: Simple Man Reproductions Source: Pro-Shot Video Rip Quality Rating: B+ |

Description: The title of this show relates directly to its whereabouts all these years. Where has this one been hiding? Apparently in Brazil. A trader from South America confirms this audio is ultimately from a rare video on the ATWAS tour, if you can believe that. The sound quality is amazingly good for it's age and no doubt the best sounding boot from this tour. At this point Rush were still an opening band and this night Foghat was the headliner. To put a little perspective on this recording, it comes about 6 months after Rush had recorded the shows for "All The World's A Stage" at Massey Hall in Toronto. The resulting live album had been out a little over 2 months when they did this show.

Tear The Temples Down Date: 11/27/76, Winterland, San Fran, CA Label: Digital Reproductions Source: Audience Quality Rating: C+ |
|
|
Description: On this night Rush was opening for Ted Nugent, who they blew away. Too bad the quality isn't that great because the boys are rocking their balls off here. With this recording, I'd say it's barely listenable and only recommended for diehards.

Summer Nights Date: 6/2/77, Manchester, England Label: Digital Reproductions Source: Audience Quality Rating: B |

|
Description: This is a fine performance by the band as they made the transition from Phase 1 to Phase 2 or their career, which began with "A Farewell To Kings". With that album, they added more keyboards and you could tell they were starting to get more experimental with keyboards and longer song structures. A couple things to note here...this is only their second ever performance overseas and it showcases a pre-release version of "Xanadu" as well. The sound here is okay...it's fairly clear, but doesn't have the definition you'd prefer in an audience show.

By-Tor's Battle Version 2.0 Date: 10/25/76, Seattle, WA Label: Digital Reproductions Source: Soundboard Quality Rating: B+/A- |

Description: This is a pleasant surprise and fast becoming one of my favorite Rush boots....a board from 1976! Now before you get too excited, this IS an old show so the quality isn't quite what you'd expect from a board. It's not because the recording itself is bad, but I fear it's just too many generations down the line. Hopefully, something "closer to the source" will show up. That being said, the performance is hot and the band is rocking hard. This has got to be one of the best performances I've ever heard from Rush...and Geddy's voice is in prime wailing condition. As a matter of fact, I don't think I've ever heard Geddy sing better than this in the early days. This version also includes the much talked about (and traded) improvisation which occurs between Alex and Neil once Geddy breaks a string. The blues improv is great...a sound rarely if ever heard coming from Rush. The performance here is top notch and a must for any Rush fan who's really into their early period.

Sign Of Eth Date: 6/2/77, Manchester, England Label: Moose Records Source: Audience Quality Rating: B+ |

|
Description: This is a very good audience boot from the ATWAS tour. Of note here is the pre-release version of "Xanadu" (hard to believe there was time when we were without this song!). Considering it's age, this audience boot is great and definitely worth having if you're really into this era of the band. Oh, did I mention The Necromancer is on here? They weren't performing all of it at this time, but we do get a fair sampling of it.

The Work Of Gifted Hands, PE Date: 11/28/76, Fresno, CA Label: Digital Reproductions Source: Audience Quality Rating: A |

|
Description: This is a very good audience boot from the ATWAS tour. At this point the band were still mainly an opening act, so the setlist is short. However, the performance is good and sound is very good for an audience.
