Rush/Fly By Night Tours
Title:
First Time Date: 8/14/74, Civic Area, Pittsburgh, PA Label: I-vent 0706.33-99 Source: Audience Quality Rating: D |
|
|
Description: Here is the first Rush performance with Neil Peart in America. Rush did play a few North American dates with original drummer, John Rutsey. I picked up this show purely for historical reasons. You know, it's Neil's first show with the band and it's the first show of the first tour, etc. Other than that, the sound here is dreadful. It sounds like the taper was sitting on the microphone. You can make out Geddy's wails and some guitars but otherwise this is a muddy mess not to be bothered with unless you're hardcore. By the way, in this first show, Rush was opening for Uriah Heep (imagine that!). Also, you can hear the taper and perhaps someone nearby mocking the sound of Geddy's voice. I'll admit, it was "opening day" and Geddy never sounded scarier.

Title:
Don Kirshner + More (DVD) Date: Various Early Dates Label: None Source: Soundboard Quality Rating: C+/B+ |
|
|
Description: Here is a compilation of rare early Rush promotional videos and appearances. The quality ranges from crappy but watchable to pretty good. Luckily the best stuff on here doesn't look all that bad, in particular the Don Kirshner Rock Special appearance. This is a really rare glimpse at Rush live in 1975 just after Fly By Night was released. The videos for "Circumstances" and "La Villa" are very similar to "The Trees" which is on the Chronicles DVD. Another nice thing about "Circumstances" is that it's performed live w/o an audience as was "Trees". The promotional videos for the "A Farewell To Kings" album are the best quality here and are not performed live. I wish the quality were better but if you're into seeing how early Rush looked and sounded, check this out.

Title:
Electric Rush Date: 12/5/74 Electric Ladyland, NY Label: Digital Reproductions Source: FM Broadcast Quality Rating: A- |
|
|
Description: A must have for any serious Rush collector. There are many versions out there, but this is the latest and greatest, definitive version of this performance (due to being a lower gen source than previous versions). This recording was made a few months after Neil joined the band, but before the release of "Fly By Night". I used to think this was the best sounding early Rush...but then came the Agora shows (which are incredible). So, those shows have spoiled me a bit...but this performance shouldn't be overlooked because it's not quite as sharp as "Finding Prime". It's Rush at one of their most raw stages...and it sounds great...enjoy!

Title:
The Fifth Order Of Angels Date: 8/26/74 The Agora, Cleveland Label: Sirius Records Source: Pre-Broadcast CD Quality Rating: A+ |
|
|
Description:
This is as good as it gets
in terms of early, unbridled Rush. There have been many sources for
this over the last couple years, but nothing is better than the
pre-broadcast tape...and that's what this boot is. This means not only
do we get much cleaner, dynamic sound, we also don't have to hear
those annoying radio station liners in-between tracks. One of the
things I love about this boot is Geddy's raw bass sound...it rumbles
through this recording like riding on a blown out tire (and that's a
good thing for a change!). Quite simply,
the band sounds amazing. The best sounding
early Rush recording I've ever heard. Thank you WMMS!
Now, I should also mention that of the two Agora shows, this one is the best. First of all, it's historic in that it marks the very first time Rush performed "Fly By Night". In addition to live versions of "Bad Boy" and "Fancy Dancer", we're also treated to a song I didn't even know existed called "Garden Road". Also of note, this is Neil's third live performance with the band. |

Title:
Finding Prime Date: 12/16/74 The Agora, Cleveland Label: Sirius Records Source: Pre-Broadcast CD Quality Rating: A+ |
|
|
Description: Since this performance was recently re-broadcast on WMMS in Cleveland there are many sources becoming available. This best copy is this one because it's a clone of the pre-broadcast cds. My views of the band's performance are much the same as on another Agora show ("Fifth Order Of Angels"). The band hand in a shorter set this time around and even slow down their version of "Bad Boy" to give it more of a bluesy groove. If you're looking for raw, early Rush, look no further.

Title:
Bad Boys In Cleveland Date: 5/15/75, The Agora, Cleveland Label: GKR/Digital Reproductions Source: FM Broadcast Quality Rating: A- |
|
|
Description: To give you some perspective...this Agora show is close to a year after the ones that Cleveland radio (WMMS) recently re-broadcast. The boys have returned to the venue that helped launch their career. This time around they have a second album under their belt (their first with new drummer Neil Peart, "Fly By Night") and you hear their rough sound beginning to take shape. The gymnastics of then new tune "Beneath, Between And Behind" was enough proof that Rush was breaking their own ground while still keeping a firm foothold in Zeppelin/Cream/Who territory.

Title: By-Tor 74
Date: 12/5/74, NYC
Label: Scarred
Source: FM Broadcast
Quality Rating: A-Description: This is an upgrade to the one below, "Live From Electric Ladyland". However, because a better version of this performance exists with "Electric Rush" (see above), the only good thing about this boot are the bonus tracks. Thrown in to round out the disc are two audience recordings of "Middletown Dreams" and "The Big Money", the latter which was recorded before the release of Power Windows. Unless you're into the bonus tracks, skip this one and get the definitive "Electric Rush" for the improved sound.

Title: Live From Electric Ladyland Studios 1974
Date: 12/05/74, NYC
Label: Klondyke Records
Source: FM Broadcast
Quality Rating: B+
Description: A great performance, however, because a better version of this show exists with "Electric Rush" (see above), the only good thing about this boot are the bonus tracks. Thrown in to round out the disc are 5 audience recordings including the unreleased "Fancy Dancer". However, the quality on this audience recording is pretty poor. This is recommended for diehards and completists only., the latter which was recorded before the release of Power Windows. Unless you're into the bonus tracks, skip this one and get the definitive "Electric Rush" for the improved sound.
