Grace Under Pressure Tour
Title:
Montreal '84 (DVD) Date: 7/14/84, Montreal, Canada Label: Unknown Source: Audience Quality Rating: C+ |
Description: This is an audience shot from the "Grace Under Pressure" tour. The quality here, unfortunately, is not too good. However, it's not totally unwatchable. You do get to see them perform "Afterimage", which is extremely rare as they didn't play it much on that tour or anytime since.

Title:
Grace Under Pressure Tour (DVD) Date: 9/21/84, Toronto, CA Label: Music Vision/Polygram Source: VHS Quality Rating: A/A+ |
Description: This is an excelent transfer from the out-of-print VHS to DVD. If you're familiar with this release you know how excellent it is and I would definitely recommend grabbing this if you don't have a copy of the tape. They perform the entire Fear trilogy including an awesome version of "The Weapon", which includes an intro from "Count Floyd" of SCTV fame. The version of "Closer To The Heart" is among my favorites as well. Highly Recommended. Also available in the VCD format.

Title:
Through The Camera Eye (VCD) Date: 1985 Label: Music Vision/Polygram Source: Studio Quality Rating: A+ |
Description: This is an excellent transfer from the out-of-print VHS to VCD (Video CD). This video collection was released in 1985 and does contain a few videos not found on the Chronicles DVD, including "The Body Electric", "Vital Signs" and "Tom Sawyer". The video for "Vital Signs" is much the same as "Limelight" in that it shows the band performing at LeStudio. The version of "Tom Sawyer" on the Chronicles DVD is also from the "Le Studio" performance, but the one found on this tape is lifted from the "Exit Stage Left" video. The transfer on this one is quite excellent, with rarely any pixellation to be found. If you don't own the VHS, or if you're looking for a digital copy for the archives, this is a must.

Cool Under Fire Date: 9/27/84, Largo, MD Label: Digital Reproductions Source: Soundboard Quality Rating: A |
Description: This is the best Grace Under Pressure tour boot out there, in my opinion. By the way, this is a much improved version of "Bottle Of Booze", often known as "Tip Of The Iceberg". The sound here has hardly any surface noise (vinyl source) and it's punchier, probably because it is a 1st generation source. The performance here is outstanding, even though Geddy's voice sounds like it's about to give out at times. If you don't have this title, it's a must-have for any Rush fans.

Experience To Extremes Date: 6/25/84, Milwaukee, WI Label: Prism Records Source: Audience Quality Rating: A- |
Description: Probably the best audience source for a "Grace Under Pressure" tour. And hey, you get to hear extremely rare live versions of "Red Lenses" and "Afterimage". The sound could be a bit brighter, but overall it has a nice full sound that doesn't offend the ears. There are some tacked on bonus tracks from various older dates. All recordings are audience and the quality is not too hot. Highly recommended to the GUP era fans.

Title:
Made In Japan Date: 11/20/84, Osaka, Japan Label: Gypsy Eye Source: Audience Quality Rating: A |
Description: Here's an excellent "not your average" audience boot from the GUP tour. If you listen to this boot long enough it almost starts to sound like a good radio broadcast. The instruments are well defined and the overall sound seems to be nicely balanced. What makes this boot a bit special to me is how the Japanese audience responds to the band. You will often hear some silence between tracks as the audience politely claps before a new song is announced and then finish before the band can get started! The audience, while very into the show, don't display much emotion while the song is playing...which is very good for an audience boot!

Title:
Bottle Of Booze Date: 9/27/84, Landover, MD Label: Gypsy Eye Source: Soundboard Quality Rating: A- |
Description: This is the same as "Tip Of The Iceberg", except Gypsy Eye has improved a couple of things, making this the definitive version of this show. "Iceberg" runs a tad fast and this one fixes that problem. Also the sound quality has been improved a little bit and overall, sounds a lot more consistent than "Iceberg". I would have to highly recommend this title and say it's a must for all Rush fans. I mean most of the listenable Grace Under Pressure boots have been dubbed from the VHS version of their 84 tour...and with varying degrees of sound quality. However, this is a totally different venue and different night altogether. While it's not the entire show, it does have some golden nuggets like great live versions of "The Body Electric", "Kid Gloves", "Between The Wheels". I also like hearing "Red Barchetta" here for two reasons. I love this song and felt it never sounded good live on Exit...Stage Left. Here, the performance is energized and bright. Plus, Alex breaks a string (or something happens) and isn't able to play for about 15 seconds...we get to hear Geddy cutting loose on the bass for a little while there...very cool. There are some sound flaws in spots. Overall, the sound is very full, bright and raw...just what you'd expect from a soundboard recording. The definitive version of this show is "Cool Under Fire" (see above).

Spinning Wheels Date: 5/12/84, Reno, NV Label: Digital Reproductions Source: Audience Quality Rating: A |
Description: This is a very nice sounding audience boot. All the instruments can be heard clearly and the performance is good. One of the nice things about this collection is that it includes a rare live version of "Afterimage". If you're into great audience recordings and like this era of Rush, I'd highly recommend it, even if you have "Bottle of Booze" or "Currently In Vogue".

Currently In Vogue Date: 9/21/84, Toronto, Canada Label: Good Kharma Source: VHS dub Quality Rating: A+ |
Description: If you own a copy of the Grace Under Pressure VHS you know exactly what you're getting here. The transfer from tape to CD is excellent, probably the best of all the boots from this show. This is another must have for all Rush collectors in that it includes excellent live recordings of "The Enemy Within", "The Weapon" and "New World Man", all of which have never appeared on a live album to date. But you know, it's not always about getting those unreleased live songs. As I've mentioned before, I never really cared for the sound quality of the official "Exit...Stage Left" live album. So, any live version of a song from that album is a treat for sore ears. This recording is no exception. The guys bust out of the gate with a very rousing "Spirit Of Radio". "Closer To The Heart" is excellent as well, arguably among the best versions of the song. They also tear up YYZ, Temples and Tom Sawyer like you've never heard before...an all around, excellent recording.

Description: See "Bottle Of Booze" above for details as they are both from the same source and show. This one runs a tad fast, and "Booze" fixes that problem. Also "Bottle Of Booze" has slightly improved sound, making it the definitive version of this show. I could only recommend this title to a Rush bootleg collector who must have everything. The definitive version of this show is "Cool Under Fire" (see above).
