Hemispheres Tour
Title:
A Desert Passage, PE Date: 11/20/78 Tucson, AZ Label: Digital Reproductions Source: Soundboard (1st Gen) Quality Rating: A+ |
Description: In my opinion, this is the definitive "Hemispheres" show out there. If you want something from this tour, check out this one. It's an excellent soundboard that uses other soundboard sources to fill in some minor gaps that the original tape didn't have. This is a nice sound improvement over "Every Soul A Battlefield" or "Storm Over Tucson". Definitely check this out.
Intro 3:09 Circumstances

Title:
Dedication, PE Date: 2/3/79 Cleveland, OH Label: Digital Reproductions Source: Audience Quality Rating: B |
Description: This is an okay boot from the "Hemispheres" tour. The sound is a bit thin and there is a good deal of overall sound fluctuation. You can hear the essence of the performance, so if you're just looking for that, it will do. However, for anyone looking to get a nice sounding Rush show from this tour, I would suggest checking out "A Desert Passage", "Buenos Nochas, Motor City" or even "A Right To Passage".
Anthem 4:59 Circumstances

Title:
A Passage To Oslo, PE Date: 5/24/79 Oslo, Norway Label: Digital Reproductions Source: Audience Quality Rating: A+ |
Description: Dare I say this is the best sounding 70's audience boot? It may be edged out by "Gifted Hands" but that's not to take away much from this wonderful recording straight off the master cassette tapes. It's surprisingly bright for a recording this old and you can hear every instrument clearly. From what I understand it's an audience boot...but it could be taken for a high gen soundboard, it's that good. I was just listening to "Xanadu" and for a second I thought it was a board...everything is so well balanced. If you're a fan of this era Rush, you definitely need to pick this up!
Anthem 4:30 Closer to the Heart
4:02 |
Title:
Waltz Of The Shreves Date: 11/04/78 Vancouver, BC Label: Digital Reproductions Source: Audience Quality Rating: A- |
Description: This is an incredible audience recording from the Hemisphere's tour. There's some minor tape fluctuation that compromises some of the highs in places...the sound seems to get better as it goes on, though. This is the earliest known show from this tour and the boys are in fine form, especially Geddy, who turns in an exceptionally strong vocal performance. Highly recommended.
Anthem 4:12 Circumstances

Title:
Storm Over Tuscon - Titanium Date: 11/20/78 Tucson, AZ Label: Rush-Signals Productions Source: Soundboard Quality Rating: A+ |
Description: This is a new version of this show, most commonly known as "Cygnus Gold Edition", "Cygnus X-Story", "First Time In Tucson", "Every Soul A Battlefield" and others. This version has been remastered a bit and given more punch. The definitive version of this show is called "A Desert Passage" (see above).
Title:
Black Forest Date: 5/28/79, Frankfurt, Germany Label: Digital Reproductions Source: Soundboard Quality Rating: A |
Description: This is an awesome bootleg from the very end of the Hemispheres Tour. The great thing here is that the show is complete and you get both books of Cygnus uncut. For the big Rush fan, this is a must. |

Title:
Cygnus Gold Edition Date: 11/20/78, Tucson, AZ Label: Prism Records Source: Soundboard Quality Rating: A- |
Description: This is another version of the heavily bootlegged Tucson show from 78. The sound is better than Cygnus X-Story in that it's brighter. Also, Prism Records substituted parts from another show to make up for the gaps in this one. The problem is, they used parts from an audience show, so you can really tell the difference. However, because it has better sound overall, I prefer it over any other boot of this show. The sound quality is excellent...all instruments can be heard clearly. Plus this boot has, in my opinion, the best live version of "Something For Nothing" that you will ever hear. This is almost the complete show, the exception being a brief edit in "Hemispheres" and 2112, although cut-off early, is still longer than previously available versions of this show. This is only recommended for the collector who needs everything. The definitive version of this show is called "A Desert Passage" (see above). |

Title:
Buenos Nochas! Motor City Date: 12/2/78, Detroit, MI Label: Digital Productions Source: Soundboard Quality Rating: A |
Description: Wow. Superb. "A diamond in the waste", as someone once said. This is an excellent soundboard from the Hemispheres tour which no serious Rush fan can be without. Why? Well, it's a complete show, so you get both books of Cygnus unedited for the first time. The only drawbacks are a small cut in the beginning of Working Man and some minor tape fluctuation in the first part of the show...but certainly nothing to take away from this otherwise great find. Highly recommended. |

Title:
Rocinante Remastered Date: 11/4/78, Vancouver, BC Label: Digital Productions Source: Audience Quality Rating: A- |
Description: This was a surprise. I mean, we already have some excellent soundboards from this tour...why settle for an audience from this same tour? The problem is, with this audience recording the only settling you'll be doing is settling down to listen to this unexpectedly great boot. The vocals are upfront, as is the bass, guitar and drums. With the amount of clarity in this boot it practically reminds me of a soundboard a few generations down the line instead of an audience recording. On top of that, the band were really on fire this night...the playing is tight and quite energized. I strongly recommend this one. |

Title:
A Right To Passage Date: 6/4/79, Pinkpop Festival, Holland Label: Rocks Source: Soundboard Quality Rating: A |
Description: There are quite a few boots from this show. I used to own "Rushian Roulette" and another one whose title escapes me...however, none compare to the quality of this one. This is regarded as the definitive boot from this Pinkpop Festival performance. There are no surprises here since all the songs have been officially released live in way way or another...but the performance is great. If you're a Rush fan, you need to pick this one up. |

Title:
Cygnus X Story Date: 11/20/78, Tucson, AZ Label: Gypsy Eye Source: Soundboard Quality Rating: A- |
Description: I would have to recommend this one only to the Rush bootleg collector that must have everything. In my opinion, Cygnus Gold Edition is the definitive version of this show as it has better sound. Unlike "Cygnus Gold" this one does not attempt to fill in the gaps with another source (which is the only drawback for "Gold"). But I would say the improved sound in Cygnus Gold makes it the better choice. For more details of this boot, please see the notes for Cygnus Gold Edition above. This is only recommended for the collector who needs everything. The definitive version of this show is called "A Desert Passage" (see above). |

Title:
New Year's Eve Bash '78 Date: 12/31/78, Toronto, CA Label: None Source: Very Audience Quality Rating: D |
No Artwork |
Description: I would have to recommend this one only to the Rush bootleg collector that must have everything (and I do mean everything). This boot is not that widely circulated and kinda rare...but then again, it's not one you'll want to play too often either. The sound quality is poor and there are much better boots out there for this tour. That's a shame too because the band does sound like they're pumped up for the show...keep in mind, it is a New Year's Eve bash so emotions were running high. Between "La Villa" and "2112" there's a countdown to midnight and then you can hear Auld Lang Syne playing over the loudspeakers then the band launches into the encores.

Title:
Warnor's Theater '78 Date: 11/15/78, Fresno, CA Label: None Source: 2nd Generation Quality Rating: B |
No Artwork |
Description: A pretty decent sounding audience boot from the Hemispheres tour. I should note this version has one 40+ minute track on each disc. This is taken right from a copy of the master tapes and I suppose the owner never bothered separating the tracks for cd!
