Madonna
- The Making Of Sex (1DVD). In 1992 Madonna pushed the envelope further by releasing a book of erotic photos which aimed to express her creative, sexual side through numerous fantasy-filled scenarios. Photos included her nude with rapper Vanilla Ice, actress Isabella Rossellini, supermodel Naomi Campbell and anyone else willing to do it. I remember the book became very hard to find rather quickly and, even now, used copies are selling for close to $100 on auction sites. This disc contains the entire SEX book and you can "browse" it page by page with your remote. However, the most interesting part of this disc is the "documentary" which brings those photos to life. There's a good hour of video footage from the various shoots depicted in the book set to annoying music. Basically, Madonna has never been more nude than she is here, both in pictures and video. The Mars Volta
- Live At The Lowlands Festival (1DVD). 8/29/2003. Here is an impressive performance from this adventurous hard rock band. Upon first look I felt as if I were watching a legendary performance before the first song was even over - that's the kind of presence this band has. The band were riding the wave of their first, full length album "De-Loused in the Comatorium", which combined elements of hardcore, psychedelic rock, and free jazz. If you want to see something really different, check out the Mars Volta. Be ready for an assault on your senses as the band seemingly leaves no musical stone unturned. Songs include "Drunkship Of Lanterns", "Cicatriz ESP" and more. The set runs about 45 minutes and also includes an interview with the band. If you're a fan, this is an absolute must.

Dave Matthews Band
- Live Earth (1DVD). 7/7/09, Giants Stadium, full set, Bravo bcast, A
- Live At PinkPop (1DVD) 5/28/07, Holland, Germany
- 8/31/00 (2DVD) Virginia Beach, VA. Here is an excellent, pro shot video from a stop in their hometown state on a very humid night. This looks like the house video feed, which features about 5 cameras doing a nice job of catching all the action w/nice fades. There are some times between songs where there isn't a video feed so there are some blank spots. However, whenever the band is playing you see it all. The sound is off the board as well. Songs include "Best Of What's Around", an excellent version of "All Along The Watchtower", "Minarets", "JTR", "Song That Jane Likes", "Jimi Thing" and more. Butch Taylor and Jamal Milner guest on keys and guitar. A must have for any DMB fan.
Quality Rating: A+- 7/12/00 (2DVD) Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ. Like the VA Beach show on 8/31/00 this is another show sourced from the in-house video feed. This is one of the best shows of the tour and the sound here is really nice and full (better than the VA show above, which isn't bad at all). Songs include the opener "Warehouse", "Drive In Drive Out", "Crash Into Me", "Stay", new songs "Grey Street", "Sweet Up And Down", and also "All Along The Watchtower" plus more. Highly recommended.
Quality Rating: A+- Crashing The Quarter (1DVD). 12/21/96, French Quarter, New Orleans. This was an MTV special featuring the band live in New Orleans. Live footage is mixed with band interview footage. Songs include "Tripping Billies", "What Would You Say", "Crash", "So Much To Say" and more. Video Preview

Paul McCartney (see also The Beatles)
- St. Petersburg '04 (1DVD). St. Petersburg, Russia. 2003. Here's a nice proshot, featured in it's entirety here. This show did wind up being officially released in 2005 as a bonus on his "Red Square" DVD. However, that version is incomplete. Songs include "Jet", "Got to Get You Into My Life", "Flaming Pie", "Let Me Roll It", "Drive My Car", "Penny Lane" and even the rare "Helter Skelter", which I believe is his first ever live performance of the song. Artwork
Quality Rating: Video A+ ; Audio A- Glastonbury '04 (1DVD). 6/24/04. Glastonbury Fest, England. Here is a high definition broadcast with excellent quality...the only downside, it's not the complete show. You get about the last hour of the show, which picks up with "Drive My Car". The performance is great, but since it's the end of the show, you get alot of the standard songs such as "Hey Jude", "Get Back", "Let It Be". If you're a diehard McCartney fan, you'll want this. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- Madrid '04 (1PAL DVD). 5/30/04, Madrid, Spain. Here is a superb proshot that could almost be mistaken for an official release. The video quality is as good as it gets and the audio is not far behind. Paul's in good voice and the band is rockin through a very Beatles-heavy setlist'. Songs include "Jet", "Let Me Roll It", "All My Loving", "Band On The Run", plus the rarely (if ever) performed Beatle tunes "I Got A Feeling", "Helter Skelter", "You Won't See Me" and "For No One". Paul also pays tribute to his former Beatles by singing a song for John, covers "All Things Must Pass" for George and teases with a few verses of Ringo's "Yellow Submarine". Full-show. If you're a McCartney fan or just want to see a recent show of his, this is the one to get. Also of note: about halfway though it seems there's a "pause" in the original source which causes a blackout for around a minute or so and then the show resumes. Hey, they don't call them bootlegs for nothing. Also available, a 2DVD NTSC version of the show (a little darker than the PAL version). Artwork
Quality Rating: Video: A+ ; Audio: A (slight board hum)- Unplugged (1DVD). Limohouse Studios, Wembley, London. 1/25/91. The reason McCartney embarked on a more intimate tour in early '91 was due to the hiring of his new drummer, Blair Cunningham. McCartney had intended on taking the year off but after hiring Cunningham in late 1990, didn't feel like having him wait around a year while the band went on hiatus. Instead of launching a full scale "rock show", McCartney decided to tour around venues he hadn't played a while and do more intimate shows. This is sourced from a Japanese broadcast and quality is superb all around, the best I've seen since the actual broadcast itself. The catalog of some artists can suffer when stripped down to mainly acoustical instruments. Since McCartney is such a phenomenal songwriter, his songs only get more revealing when performed in this setting. Songs include "We Can Work It Out", "Blackbird", "Here There And Everywhere", "Everyday" and much more. There is also a bonus section on this DVD not to be overlooked. Here you'll find many videos from Wings and solo McCartney through the early 80's including "Band On The Run", "Listen To What The Man Said (Live)", "Take It Away", "No More Lonely Nights" and more. The quality on the videos is very good to excellent. Alot of care went into this DVD. Fans will enjoy for sure. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A/A+- Video Collection, Vol 3 (1983-1989) (1DVD). Here's a nice collection of videos including "Take It Away", "So Bad", the rare "Spies Like Us", "Press To Play", "Figure Of Eight", "My Brave Face" and many more. Quality is very good throughout. Artwork | Video Preview
Quality Rating: A- The Video Collection 1979-82 (1DVD). Here is a collection of videos from McCartney's late Wings/early solo era in the 80's. Some of it is pulled directly from other videos in circulation. For example, all the stuff from "Back To The Egg" is already available on the DVD of the same name below. That's a shame because I was hoping for improved quality, but overall, still not bad and definitely watchable. Other videos include "Coming Up", "Tug Of War", "Take It Away", "Ebony And Ivory" (2 versions) and some more. Unlike some recent video collections that I've seen, this footage is not taken from a recent VH1 Classic broadcast, instead coming right from the original MTV premieres. Artwork
Quality Rating: B+/A-- Back To The Egg (1DVD). 1978/79. If you're a fan of McCartney and his album "Back To The Egg" you'll definitely want this one. Here you get all the rarely seen videos from that album. Picture quality is pretty good, and the audio track is taken from a higher quality source. Highlights here are "Goodnight Tonight", which was recorded around this time but not included on the album, "Getting Closer", "Spin It On" and "Arrow Through Me", one of the forgotten McCartney classics. If that's not enough you also get the extremely rare "Rockestra" documentary which takes you behind the scenes for the making of that tune. Another bonus here is the video for "Wonderful Christmas Time".
Quality Rating: Video B+ ; Audio: A- Rockshow (1DVD). The Kingdome, Seattle, WA, 1976. Here's a great transfer from the classic Wings show. The video is still a bit dark but the sound is nice and full. Songs include "Jet", "Medicine Jar", "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Live And Let Die" and more.

John Mellencamp
- Live At Walter Reed Army Medical Center (1DVD). 4/27/07, HDNET bcast, 1DVD, A+, Art
- Video Collection (1DVD). Here's a collection of music videos you've probably seen a thousand times over if you grew up with Mellencamp on television during the 80's. He has a ton of videos and not all of them are here. I suspect one day we'll get an official, more comprehensive video collection, but this will do for now. Overall, the picture and sound quality range from very good to excellent and include "Ain't Even Done With The Night", "Hurt So Good", "Paper In Fire", "Check It Out" and more. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A-/A- ABC In Concert (1DVD). Deer Creek Amphitheatre, Indiana, 7/4/92. Here's a July 4th show from America's own. Arguably, this is the last of the "classic" Mellencamp as he tours in support of his "Whenever We Wanted" album. The setlist is chock full of hits and his band is tight, especially drummer Kenny Aronoff, who is bristling with energy. Songs include "Love And Happiness", "Paper In Fire", "Jack And Diane", "Rain On The Scarecrow", "Hurts So Good", "Authority Song" and more. Taken from a broadcast, the video quality is excellent, while the audio could use a stronger, more clearer mix.

Men At Work
- US Festival, 5/28/83, Devore, CA. Here's a nice show from their appearance at the second US Festival. Their set was the second to last of the first day (the Clash closed the show). This marks one of the last appearances of the original lineup. Soon after the Cargo tour ended, drummer Jerry Speiser and bassist John Rees would split. The remaining men went on to record the band's final studio album, "Two Hearts", which tanked. Songs here include "I Can See It In Your Eyes", "The Entertainer", "The Longest Night", "Blue For You", "Helpless Automation", "Who Can It Be Now" and more. Artwork
Quality Rating: A-- Live At Berkley (1DVD). 1983, Berkeley, CA. This concert was originally broadcast on HBO, officially released on video and then quickly went out of print. This transfer is from a freshly opened VHS copy so the quality is about as good as it gets. The picture has lots of color and clarity, not to mention excellent sound as well. This is the classic lineup at their peak delivering an excellent show. Colin Hay repeatedly (and mistakenly) refers to the venue as "San Francisco" (and even make a gay reference to a couple guys in the front row) before the audience finally reminds him they are in Berkley. All the great songs are included here such as "Overkill", "High Wire", "It's A Mistake", "Be Good Johnny", "Underground", "Blue For You" and more. This is a must for all Men At Work fans. Artwork | Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- Rockpalast (1DVD). 12/2/82. Hamburg, Germany. Here's a broadcast with very good picture and sound quality, although as with most Rockpalast shows, it does appear a bit dark. The band here performs songs from their debut as well as "Cargo", which wouldn't be released until the following year. If you're looking for a great Men At Work show, I wouldn't recommend this one, however. While it is good, the Berkeley show is much better in terms of performance and also picture/sound quality. That one is more colorful, brighter and the band's wacky personalities really shine there. They perform more songs from the debut here that you won't find on Berkeley, including "Catch A Star", "Touching The Untouchables", "People Just Love To Play With Words", "I Can See It In Your Eyes" and more. This is more for diehards.

Men Without Hats
- Videos + Live (1DVD). This disc contains many of the band's videos, live performances and some interviews. The video quality on the videos is pretty good and taken right from broadcast TV. The good news for fans - the audio on the videos has been re-synched to a higher source so sound quality is high. Videos include "Safety Dance", "I Like", "Where Do The Boys Go?", "Pop Goes The World", "In The 21st Century" and more. The real treat here is the live portion from Montreal 1985. It has a timecode (not a distraction) and the proshot video is of excellent quality. Live songs include "Jenny Wore Black", "I Like", "I Got The Message", "I Like". "Safety Dance", "Editions Of You" and more. There's also "Pop Goes The World" from Solid Gold and Top Of The Pops and various interviews with singer Ivan from 83-91. The quality on these latter clips aren't as good as the videos and live material but still watchable. Basically, this is the holy grail for any serious fan of the band.

Metallica
- Escape From Seoul (2 DVD). Olympic Main Stadium, Seoul, Korea. 8/15/06. Silver Stallion Productions. Here's a fantastic HD broadcast from the band in Korea. It's good to see a nice balance of songs from their earlier period thrown in with the better songs from their shakier later albums including "Fuel", "Frantic", "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Orion", "Master Of Puppets". There's even room for 2 new songs. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- Rock Am Ring (1DVD). 6/3/06, Nurburgring, Germany. Here the band celebrates the 20th Anniversary of their landmark "Master Of Puppets" album by playing it live from start to finish ("Battery" to "Damage, Inc."). This is great because most of my favorite Metallica songs are not only on this album, but rarely played live including "Disposable Heroes" and "Orion", which is amazing here. It was an interview with Geddy Lee of Rush that led me to Metallica in 1986. He mentioned being a fan of "Puppets", so I gave it a listen and was hooked every since. I don't care for much after their "Justice" album so anything that harkens back to their earlier period is fine by me. Other songs include "Creeping Death", "Fuel", "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Fade To Black", "One", "Seek And Destroy" and more. This is sourced from an excellent satellite broadcast. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- Rock In Rio, Lisboa (1DVD). 4/6/04, Lisbson, Portugal. The band is on fire in this 2 hour plus performance, which appears to be sourced from a broadcast. Quality is excellent all around. Songs include "Harvester Of Sorrow", "Fuel", "Leper Messiah", "Frantic", "St,. Anger", "Hit The Lights" and more. Fans will likey. Artwork | Video Preview.
Quality Rating: Video A+ ; Audio A- Nassau '04 (2DVD). 4/20/04. Nassau, NY. This is a 2cam mix with board sound. The audio is rough, yet punchy so it's fairly enjoyable. There are a couple of spots where the audio returns to the camcorder source but most is board. Songs include "St. Anger" and much more.
Quality Rating: Video A ; Audio A-- Rockpalast 2003 (1DVD). 6/8/03, Nuerburgring-Eifel, Germany. This show is part of a festival called "Rock AM Ring". Here is one excellent broadcast from the "St. Anger" tour. The video quality is great and sound is excellent. Performance is pumped and among the best I've seen from them. I haven't really paid much attention to them since the Black Album, so that makes this show all the better as all songs (save two from St. Anger) are from pre-"black album" days. It's mostly a classic metal assault. This is the first time I've seen new bassist Robert Trujillo and he fits in very well...very aggressive style. Songs include "No Remorse", "Creeping Death", "Master Of Puppets", "Battery", "Blackened", "One", "Seek And Destroy", "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Enter Sandman" and more. A must for fans. Artwork
Quality Rating: Video: A ; Audio: A+- Woodstock '99 (1DVD). 7/23/99, Rome, NY. Here the band perform late one night in the early stages of Woodstock '99. They put on a great, energetic show beginning with the hilarious cover of "So What".
Quality Rating: A- Holland '92 (2DVD). 12/7/92. Den Bosch, Holland. Here's an amazing proshot from the "Black Album" tour. The audio and sound are perfect. The show opens with a blistering "Enter Sandman" then a launch into "Creeping Death". Other songs include "Welcome Home", "Last Caress", "Master Of Puppets", "Seek And Destroy", "Am I Evil", "Breadfan", "Sad But True", "Wherever I May Roam", "Damage, Inc." and more. If you're fan, you'll really love this one! Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- Harvester Of Hartford (1DVD). 3/17/89. Hartford, Connecticut. Here is an audience recording from the "Justice" tour (in my opinion, the last of the classic tours). You won't want to crank this too loudly as the sound is all highs and no lows. However, it does have a very nice amount of clarity. The best thing about this boot is the video. Not only is it very clear, the taper does an excellent job of staying focused on the action. The setlist is chock full of classic goodness, including "Blackened", "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Seek And Destroy", "Creeping Death", "Battery", "Last Caress", "Am I Evil?", "Breadfan", "Harvester Of Sorrow", "Master Of Puppets" and more.

George Michael
- Unplugged (1DVD). 1996. Here's a rare unplugged performance from Michael on MTV's Unplugged show. I'm surprised this show was never officially released as he turns in a fine performance. Songs include "Fastlove", "Father Figure", "Freedom 90", "Everything She Wants" and more. This is sourced from the original broadcast but while the video is pretty good, the audio could use a bit more depth and clarity - it already has nice deep bass. If anyone has a pristine version of this show, let me know. Artwork | Video Preview

Steve Miller Band
- Something Will Happen (1DVD). Loreley, Germany1983. Rockpalst. Here is a broadcast of Miller on his "Abracadabra" tour. The stageshow is a bit elaborate and he mixes the hits in with some lesser known songs. Songs include "The Joker", "Macho City", "Rock N' Me", "Abracadabra", "Living In The USA" and more. Artwork
Quality Rating: A-- Pine Knob '82 (1DVD). Clarkston, MI. 9/25/82. Here's Steve from his "Abracadabra" tour. The video is proshot and this upgraded version is taken from an out of print laserdisc. The audio/video is great. The band is rocking here and songs include "Fly Like An Eagle", "Living In The USA", "Jungle Love", "The Joke" and more. If you're looking for a really good show, this is it. The one from Rockpalast is also good, but more of a production while this show is stripped down and to the point. Video Preview

Mr. Mister
- Spring Break 1986 (1DVD). Here is a very rare show that I pulled from my own archives (and there will be more). It's an MTV concert which features their entire 41 minute set, surprisingly without any commercial interruption. While the band does play pretty well, it wreaks of eighties. Keyboardist Steve George doesn't help much with the poofy hairdo, dark sports jacket w/white shirt, oh, and keyboard parts that now stick out like a hooker in church. Pat Mastelotto (now of King Crimson) shows off some good chops on the drums and Richard Page, while not the best at working a crowd, certainly can sing. Both picture and sound are right about excellent. Overall, this isn't the greatest performance but it's a good trip back to the summer of 1986. Where were you? Songs include "Black/White", "Something Real", "Is It Love", "Into My Own Hands", "Welcome To The Real World" and the other two you know they played. Video Preview

The Monsters Of Rock
- Monsters Of Rock (1DVD) 1988. Okay, when I traded for this I thought it included performances from the 1988 event. Instead, this is about 45 mins of interviews and performance clips. There's interviews with Van Halen, Metallica, Scorpions, Kingdom Clone and Dokken. I'd only recommended this for bigtime fans of these bands, but really, there's not much to see here. I am looking for a nice collection of performances from this event.

The Moody Blues
- London '84 (1DVD). 11/29/84. Wembley Arena, London, England. Broadcast. This UK tour was done entirely for charity: for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Songs include "Tuesday Afternoon", "The Voice", "Question", "Talking Out Of Turn" and more. Plus, bonus lip-sync performances from Solid Gold ("In Your Wildest Dreams"), an unlikely appearance on The Howard Stern Show and more. Total time approx 90min. Video Preview

Motown
- Motown 25: Yesterday Today And Forever (2DVD). 1983. I believe this is sourced from an out of print VHS that commemorated this great television special from 1983. If you love Motown, this is the DVD you. Yeah, some of the bits and introductions between songs are hammy but the music is great, including the debut of Michael Jackson's moonwalk during his much talked about version of "Billy Jean". I remember seeing this back in the day and watching Michael Jackson's status being elevated even further as a result of his memorable performance here. There's also great sets by Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops/Temptations, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson and the late Marvin Gaye. Very nice to have all these legendary Motown performers in one place delivering the goods. Video Preview

Olivia Newton-John
- Olivia (1DVD). Weber State University. Ogden, Utah. 10/12/82. Here's a rare HBO broadcast of Olivia in her prime, performing in a state that banned her "Physical" single due to "suggestive lyrics"! The performance here doesn't leave much to be desired as she was never known for her choreography, but Olivia undoubtedly looks great and is in fine voice. If you're looking to hear a wide variety of songs from throughout her career, this is for you. Everything from the drippy, country fried 70's hits are here to the fluffy pop of Grease and Xanax-du. At one point in the show, Olivia talks to the crowd in a phony southern drawl. It's really oddball to hear an Australian doing a country accent in the middle of Utah! There's some other highlights such as "A Little More Love", "Physical" and other solo tunes. This is an new, low-gen version of the show I've come across. The picture is the best I've seen and the audio is very nice. 78min.
Quality Rating: Video A- ; Audio A- The Making Of Xanadu (1DVD). This disc compiles promotional features supporting the movie Xanadu. There's the "Xanadu Midnight Special" w/Wolfman Jack, a "Making Of" television special featuring interviews with Olivia, Jeff Lynn and Gene Kelly (this is his final movie appearance). Lastly, there's a video for "Suddenly", the duet between Olivia and Cliff Richard which has enough syrup to make a stack of pancakes jealous. There's also a very nice photo gallery here with loads of pictures set to music from the film. Fans of the film will enjoy.

Stevie Nicks
- Us Festival (1DVD). 5/30/83, Devore, CA. Here is Stevie's set on the closing night of the '83 Us Festival. Her performance was second to last (Bowie closed the event). Nicks performs "Stand Back" from the yet to be released "Wild Heart" album. During this period, Nicks was still reeling from the loss of her friend Robin Anderson, who passed away in late 1982. Robin was Stevie's friend of 15 years and died of leukemia while pregnant. Robin's death devastated Stevie and she wound up not only taking care of Robin's child but married her husband, Kim Anderson, too. They got married for the wrong reasons and it ended in divorce three months later. This all lead to substance abuse problems for Nicks and it's pretty clear she's a bit messed up in this performance. Other songs include "Gold Dust Woman", "Dreams", the Petty tune "I Need To Know", "Leather And Lace", "Edge Of Seventeen", "Rhiannon" and more. Night Ranger (see also Damn Yankees)
- 7 Wishes Tour (1DVD). Irvine, CA, 1985. This is sourced from an out of print VHS (which should stay that way). I used to think Jack Blades was a cool guy back in the 80's. Now, looking back, he and the rest of the band appear to be such dorks! Check out the opening sequence here as the band climbs out of a genie's bottle (get it? seven wishes?) then ham and cheese it up on stage in front of the crowd. Overall, a disappointment. The quality is pretty good all around.

Nine Inch Nails
- Woodstock '94 (1DVD). Upstate NY. Nobody embraced the mud at this festival like Nine Inch Nails. The band came onstage covered in mud from head to toe and delivered a blistering performance. Songs include "Terrible Lie", "Closer", "Head Like A Hole", "Down In It" and more. Artwork | Video Preview

Ben Orr (also see The Cars)
- An Evening With The Ben Orr Band (1DVD). Boston, MA, 7/19/97. Here is a proshot of Ben with his band performing for an outdoor, local radio station sponsored concert event. Too bad the quality isn't better because it would make this show much more tolerable. Fans of Ben will sit through it, but those causal fans will find the audio/video just a tad too weak. Songs include "Just What I Needed", "Home Tonight" and more.
Quality Rating: Video B- ; Audio B- WBOS Music Festival (1DVD). Boston, MA, 2/2/95. Here is an audience video of Ben w/band performing in what looks like a train station, hard to say. It's a small gathering and most songs are given an acoustical treatment (probably due to house rules). Even though it's audience shot, the quality is amazingly good. The video captures all the action and the sound is decent enough. Fans of Ben will love this, others will say "you're kidding, right?". Songs include "Too Hot To Stop", "Candy-O", "Just What I Needed", "Let's Go", "Stay The Night", "Bye Bye Love" and more.

Ozzy Osbourne (also see Black Sabbath)
- Live In Philadelphia (1DVD). 6/2/89, Tower Theatre, Philadelphia, PA. Here's a proshot from what appears to be a warm up show that preceded the "No Rest For The Wicked" tour. Actually, this is sourced from a King Biscuit Pay Per View broadcast. This was the first tour and possibly among the first shows with guitarist Zakk Wylde. Wylde channels the energy of the late Randy Rhodes without being a blatant ripoff. That's probably why he remains with Ozzy to this day. Rounding out Ozzy's lineup - Geezer Butler is on bass, Randy Castillo is in drums. Overall the performance and quality are excellent. Ozzy fans will love it. Songs include "Shot In The Dark", "I Don't Know", "Cray Train", "War Pigs", "Miracle Man", "Suicide Solutions" and more. As a bonus, there's videos for "Crazy Train" (Live Randy Rhodes Tribute), "Miracle Man", "Crazy Babies", "Close My Eyes Forever" (yikes with Lita Ford) and "Breaking All The Rules". Quality on the videos is A+. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A- Speak Of The Devil (1DVD). 1982. This show was originally released on VHS in Japan and then went quickly out of print. This DVD is sourced from an out of print Brazilian release and the quality is excellent (better than I expected). After Ozzy lost Randy Rhodes in a tragic plane accident not more than 6 months earlier, plans were scrapped for a live album to document their "Diary Of A Madman" tour. Instead Ozzy did a pair of shows at the Ritz Club in NYC with former Night Ranger guitarist, Brad Gillis, and intentionally stuck to Black Sabbath tunes. Gillis' role of filling Tommy Iommi's shoes went well and he more than held his own with the material. The Ritz shows were released as the official CD "Speak Of The Devil". However, this DVD documents the tour that followed, which showcased mainly Ozzy solo material and Gillis stepping into the shoes of the late Randy Rhodes. Surprisingly, Gillis does an excellent job, but still no comparison to Rhodes, who channeled a whole new dynamic...almost like trying to replace Hendrix on guitar. What's comforting to know is the rest of the band, Tommy Aldridge (drums) and Rudy Sarzo (bass) continue to provide the best rhythm section Ozzy's ever had. Speak of the devil, Ozzy is in top form here so his performance doesn't hamper things (as it would later). Overall it's an excellent, yet bittersweet, performance. It's like a family reunion without your favorite uncle. Songs include "I Don't Know", "Suicide Solution", "Crazy Train", "Iron Man" and more. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- Randy Rhodes: Six String God (1DVD). After leaving Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne went solo and released a landmark album "Blizzard Of Oz". One of the reasons for his success was guitarist Randy Rhodes. Not only did Randy produce and co-write, he was among the first ever classically trained metal guitarists. This meant he brought a fresh sound to the metal scene and enabled Ozzy to sing "out of the box" and find a new range for his limited vocal ability. Randy Rhodes was an inspiration not only to Ozzy but to any guitar player who followed him. This DVD features an MTV news segment on Randy, a 8mm performance w/dubbed audio from The Palladium 1981 and some low quality video of Randy with Quiet Riot (that's right, he was their guitarist in 1979). The best thing here is his appearance on "After Hours" (4/28/81 Rochester, NY), a public access show. What you see here is Ozzy in great form along with Randy and the band performing such classic tunes as "Crazy Train", "Mr. Crowley", "Suicide Solution" and more. The set is pretty short (about 25 mins) but the footage is classic and a must for all Ozzy/Randy fans. There's an informative interview with Ozzy as well and it's amazing to see how coherent he was in 1981! After Randy's untimely death less than a year later (plane crash), Ozzy tumbled into a drug fueled depression and was never quite the same again. Video Preview

Oysterhead (see also Primus, The Police and Phish)
- Reverb (1VCD) . This is an episode of the HBO live music showcase "Reverb". In this episode Oysterhead share the bill with another band (whose name slips my mind) and you see about 25 minutes of each band, maybe a tad more Oysterhead, which is good. The quality here is excellent in both picture and sound. It's rare to see this lineup so if you're a fan of this group, I'd check this out. Oysterhead are Les Claypool (Primus), Stewart Copeland (The Police) and Trey Anastasio (Phish). Looking for an upgrade on DVD.

Page & Plant (see also Led Zeppelin, Black Crowes & Jimmy Page, The Firm)
- Eternal Burning (3DVD). Here are two complete Page/Plant proshot shows from 5/1/95 (Milwaukee, WI) and 10/3/95 (Irvine Meadows, CA). As a bonus there's footage from 4/1/95 (Detroit, MI). The quality throughout is simply outstanding and is a must for all fans of this lineup. The band behind Page and Plant really shine here and, in my opinion, are the reason these shows are so great. Plant's voice isn't what it used to be and there are many times you'll cringe. Page isn't always so sharp either and his playing just doesn't seem as inspired as the Zeppelin days. On the other hand, Charlie Jones, who started playing with Plant during his "Now and Zen" tour, is solid on bass. Drummer Michael Lee dazzles behind the drumkit and former Cure guitarist Porl Thompson turns in some stellar guitar playing. These shows don't only feature Zeppelin tunes. They dust off "Calling To You" from Plant's "Fate Of Nations", "Shake My Tree" from "Coverdale/Page" and even do a cover of the Cure's "Lullaby". Zep tunes include "Bring It On Home", "Ramble On", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", "The Song Remains The Same", "Four Sticks", "Kashmir" and more. Artwork 1, 2 | Video Preview

Quality Rating: A- World Liberty Concert (1DVD). Holland, 5/8/95. When I traded for this I mistakenly thought it was an Alan Parsons concert (which are hard to come by). Instead, this was a concert event which commemorated the 50th anniversary of VE-Day, the liberation of Europe. The idea for the WLC was conceived by 25 year old Dutchman Arno Geul, who at an early stage, decided Alan Parsons was the perfect Musical Director for the show. Apart from performances of the Alan Parsons Band (with Chris Thompson and Mick Mullins on vocals), Candy Dulfer, Art Garfunkel, UB40 and many others (including an 80 piece orchestra and a local choir), the show consists of military parades, airshows and a narration by Walter Cronkite, the legendary war correspondent and news anchorman. The Alan Parsons Band performed a number of older tunes (Sirius/Breakaway, Old and Wise, The Gold Bug, Sirius/Eye in the Sky) plus some new material commissioned for the show and also accompanied Dulfer, Joe Cocker and Art Garfunkel on their segments. The show was televised live in 40 countries, was attended by approximately 85.000 people and is about two hours long. The problem is, unless you are really into what this show is all about, get out a pillow. With no disrespect to veterans intended, this is the most boring video I own.
Quality Rating: A- Santiago '95 (1DVD). Santiago, Chile. 1995. With Alan Parsons having no official live releases, this is a true find. Here is a rare broadcast from Chili television. The band is rounded out with expert studio musicians who, while not much to look at it, weave amazing textures through each song. The main drawback here are the vocals. Since this band has featured rotating lead singers over the years (none of them are here), the vocals suffer because the vocalists don't really come close to capturing the essence of the original singers. "Sirius/Eye In The Sky", "Games People Play", "Time", "Prime Time", "I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You" and more. This is a new low gen source. My previous copy was in widescreen and the quality was not too great. The upgrade is full screen and the audio is excellent. Artwork

The entire Santiago '95 show is here and the quality is the same as the show I have above. There's also clips from the "World Liberty Concert" and "Madrid 2004". Overall, the quality ranges from okay to excellent. Generally, the quality is very good. Any fan of the band would be interested in this for sure as any Alan Parsons video is rare these days. Artwork

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
- Live From Gatorville (1DVD). Gainesville, Florida. 9/21/06. Great hometown show from Petty sourced from a satellite broadcast. The quality is top notch and the performances are great, including a guest vocal from Stevie Nicks on "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" and "Don't Come Around Here No More". Other songs include "Mary Jane's Last Dance", "Free Fallin'", "Handle With Care", "It's Good To Be King", "Listen To Her Heart" and more. A must for all Petty fans. Video Preview

Quality Rating:- Pulse (1DVD) 1995, Earls Court, London. Here is an excellent transfer from the out of print laserdisc to DVD of this great show. I've been hearing this show will be officially released but there's never been anything definite. So far, this is the best looking and sounding version of the show I've seen. The audio is in Dolby Digital and the picture is very clear and not fuzzy like the VHS transfers. Check out Gilmour's screaming slide guitar on the mind-bending "One Of These Days". As an added treat, the band perform the entire "Dark Side Of The Moon Album". This title is slated for an official 2DVD release in the U.S. on 6/27/06.
Quality Rating: A+- The Delicate Sound Of Thunder (1DVD) Here is an excellent transfer from the out of print laserdisc to DVD of this great show from the "Momentary Lapse" tour. Quality Rating: A+- A Venezia (1DVD) 7/15/89, Venice, Italy. You want the good news or bad news first? Okay, the good news...the picture quality on this 3rd Harvest release is great, very clear broadcast from this tour. The downside - the audio, while bright and clear, is very flat. This is best played at a lower volume and probably not something you'll want to crank, which is a shame, especially since the official "Delicate Sound Of Thunder" video is out of print. This also includes some extras such as Italian TV promos. Songs include "Dogs Of War", "Run Like Hell", "On The Turning Away" and more.
Quality Rating: Video: A ; Audio A-- The Hangar Rehearsals (1DVD). Toronto, Canada. 8/7/87. Here is proshot footage of the band rehearsing for their "Momentary Lapse" tour. The picture quality is high gen and the sound okay and I would say it's for diehards only. For those looking to crank and enjoy some live Floyd, check out "Pulse" or "Delicate Sound Of Thunder". Songs here include "Another Brick", "Comfortably Numb" and more.
Quality Rating: B- The Wall Performed Live (1DVD). 8/9/80, Earl's Court, London, England. Here is a pretty decent, rare proshot show from The Wall tour. The show itself is quite an elaborate production and hopefully it will be officially released one day. The picture quality is a few generations down the line, but still enjoyable to watch. The audio, while compressed more towards the middle ranges is also pretty good. If you're a fan of this era then you'll probably want to check it out. Video Preview

Placebo
- Rock AM Ring (1DVD). 6/7/03. Germany. A good friend of mine suggested I give Placebo a listen since I liked Rush. I listened and did hear some similarities, especially in the high-pitched vocal delivery of Brian Molko. One review I read of their debut album said it was like a mixture of Smashing Pumpkins and Rush. I would agree they sound like an "alternative Rush" to some extent. Here's the band in support of their album "Sleeping With Ghosts". Songs include "Plasticine", "Every Me Every You", "The Bitter End", "Special K", "Taste In Men", "Pure Morning". The video here is very good, however, the sound is lacking in some highs. Since they have an official DVD from this tour ("Soulmates Never Die") I'd only have to recommend this to major fans.

Robert Plant (see also Page/Plant, Led Zeppelin)
- Los Angeles '02 (1DVD). 9/12/02, Los Angeles, CA. Here's an audience cam from the "Dreamland" tour. Not a favorite album or tour of mine by Plant so I'll keep it short. If you're a diehard Plant fan, you'll want this. Otherwise, we have a consolation prize at the door. The filmer must be in a balcony on the left side of the stage. There's occasional blackouts, zooms and generally some awkward full shots of the stage. Songs include "Four Sticks", "Calling To You", "Tall Cool One" and more.
Quality Rating: Video: A+ ; Audio: A-- Promos & B-Sides (1DVD). If you take away the Led Zeppelin days from Robert Plant he still has enough solid solo material to hold his own against most any other male artist. This DVD chronicles Plant's many music videos (mostly sourced from VH1 Classic) beginning with "Burning Down One Side", the only clip from his debut solo album "Pictures At Eleven". Also included are videos for "Big Log", "In The Mood", "Little By Little", "Tall Cool One", "Ship Of Fools", Knebworth versions of "Nirvana", "Tye Dye On The Highway" and even a few videos from "Fate Of Nations" including "29 Palms", "Calling To You", "I Believe" and "If I Were A Carpenter". As a bonus, this DVD includes an audio only portion filled with various B-sides and assorted tracks that did not make his studio albums, including some pre-Zeppelin tunes from a band he fronted called "Listen". Their performance of "You Better Run" from way back in 1966 is an interesting find as it's the same song Pat Benatar had a hit with in 1980. I'm not sure if Listen's version is the original version but I had no idea Plant ever sang that song. There's many leftovers from "Fate Of Nations" and some soundtrack tunes as well including "Philadelphia Baby" from the Porky's Revenge soundtrack. Most tracks are forgettable but a nice collection for diehard Plant fans nonetheless. Video Preview

Songs include "Helen Of Troy", "Heaven Knows", "Tall Cool One", "Black Country Woman", "Misty Mountain Hop" and more.

- Rehearsal and Press Conference (1DVD). 2/12/07. Whisky A Go Go, Los Angeles, CA. I'm not sure which came first, Sting's decision to reform The Police or Andy Summer's social security check...but who cares. At least Sting woke up from his solo stupor. C'mon his last solo album featured ancient music played on a fucking lute! I'd say he was done with new ideas. This DVD showcases the televised press conference and rehearsal for their 2007 reunion tour. The interview, scattered in between performances, featured many of the questions you'd expect and already know answers to. Yes, they're touring and no word on new material. When it comes to the performances, only Sting knew what they would play. Andy played guitar like he was recently unfrozen so I hope that gets better for the upcoming tour....then again, he is 65 years old! Songs here include the inevitable "Roxanne", "Message In A Bottle", "Voices In My Head/When The World Is Running Down" and "I Can't Stop Losing You". 45min. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- Outlandos to Synchronicities (1DVD). 1995. This now out of print live compilation video was a companion to the 2CD Live set which was released around this time. This could easily be overlooked as a "greatest hits live" compilation but it turns out to be more of a greatest performances collection. Simply stated, if you're a Police fan you should not pass this one up. The live performances captured here are nothing short of brilliant and mixed with interesting band interviews and other candid footage, including a hilarious "rumble" between Sting and Summers. The footage here almost comes across as a "best of the boots" with songs from Hatfield '79, Gateshead '82, Atlanta '83 and more rare footage, such as Miami '79, London '79 and more. For example, watching the band perform "Driven To Tears" in Frejus, 1980 is nothing short of amazing as is "Can't Stand Losing You" from Miami '79. Even the tired "Roxanne" comes alive in London '79 as the band weaves together and leaves your jaw dropped. Also included here is the first ever public performance of "Message In A Bottle" (before it was even recorded for the second album). Overall, this is one fantastic live collection that really shows how great The Police were. I wish there were bands today that could come close to the caliber you see here. They don't make them like this anymore. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A- Amnesty International (1DVD) 6/15/86. Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ. This is the last ever concert appearance of The Police. The quality here is amazingly clear and appears to be from an MTV broadcast as we see Mark Goodman at the end. However, the picture and sound quality here are so good, it's practically official release quality. The band's performance here is electrifying. Songs include "King Of Pain", "Message In A Bottle", "Driven To Tears" and even "Invisible Sun" is performed with Bono of U2. A must for all Police fans. Also included is the U2 set. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- Montreal '83 (1DVD). Montreal Spectrum 1983. Here's an interesting find. When the Police decided to release an official show from their last tour they enlisted Godley And Creme (formerly of 10cc) to produce the project. At first they filmed a surprise gig in Montreal, then also a show at The Omni in Atlanta. They wound up using both. The Atlanta show was used in the official release while the audience shots are taken from the Montreal show. So, if you're familiar with the Atlanta show you'll see some familiar audience shots. Overall the video and audio quality are pretty good here and appears to be from a broadcast. There are also clips from various TV show appearances and interviews with the band.
Quality Rating: Video: A- ; Audio: B+- 1982 US Festival (1DVD). 9/3/82, Devore, CA. The DVD starts off with a color code and you hear "Hungry For You". When the video comes in a short time later you see two time codes. One is at the bottom of the screen. The other is right in the middle of the screen. Luckily it's gray colored so it doesn't stand out as much as it could have. Even with a time code right over the action it only lends to it's authenticity and rarity. This uncensored footage appears to be from a 2 or 3 generation master. The sound is on the flat side and not something you'll want to crank too loud, but it can be enjoyed as they put on a great performance. The Police played last on this night and, judging by the timecode, their set took place around 11pm. Ranking Roger steps in for some lead vocal work on "One World". It's not the complete show as some is obviously missing from the beginning but a little over an hour is here. Songs include "Invisible Sun", "Demolition Man", "Don't Stand So Close To Me", "Shadows In The Rain" and more. Not essential but worth a look if you're a big time fan.
Quality Rating: B+/A-- Live Ghost In The Machine (1DVD) 7/31/82, Gateshead, England. This is an excellent laserdisc transfer of this classic show from the "Ghost In The Machine Tour". The band bring along a small, three man horn section to give this a unique sound. With the upgraded LD source, the picture and sound are top notch, although the audio could have a bit more depth, it's quite enjoyable. There's alot of show here as it runs over 80min and includes "Spirits In The Material World", "Invisible Sun", "Demolition Man", "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", "So Lonely" and much more. A must for all fans. Artwork | Video Preview
Quality Rating: Video: A+ ; Audio A- Vina Del Mar (1DVD). Chile, 2/19/82. The disc starts out with an awkward band interview complete with interpreter. While the interviewer and interpreter are exchanging words, the band is making faces at each other, cracking smiles and basically waiting to hear their question. Their performance this night is great and this is a rare show to see. The sourcing appears to be from a television broadcast. Quality here is pretty good, but not excellent. Songs include "Hungry For You", "De Do Do", "Every Little Thing", "Demolition Man", "When The World Is Running Down", "The Bed's Too Big Without You" and more.
Quality Rating: B/B+- Vina Del Mar (1DVD). Chile, 2/20/82. This show is taken from the next night and does not include any interview footage. Audio/Video quality is about the same as on the 2/19 show. Songs include "Bring On The Night", "Shadows In The Rain", "Roxanne", "One World", "Don't Stand So Close To Me" and more.
Quality Rating: B/B+- Around The World (1DVD) This mixes live performances with sightseeing footage of the band on their 1980-81 Zenyatta World Tour, which included India, Egypt (among the first bands to play there), Japan, Australia, Latin America, and U.S. Songs include "When the World is Running Down," "Truth Hits Everybody," "Next To You," "Roxanne,", "Shadows in the Rain" and more. Quality Rating: A- Tokyo '81 (1 PAL DVD). 2/2/81, Japan. This showcases the band's tour of Japan in three sections. One part is pure performance footage where you get mostly the bigger hits from the Zenyatta era. It's a tad dark, but otherwise enjoyable. A second part includes interviews and performances from various locations and lasts over 45 minutes. The final section runs about 10 minutes and is an interview with Sting. If you're a big fan of this era you'll want to see this.
Quality Rating: Video B+ ; Audio A-- Essen '80 + Japan 81 (1PAL DVD). Grugahalle Essen, Germany. 10/18/80 + Japan 1981. The first part of this DVD showcases the band's second Rockpalast performance in 1980, supporting their "Zenyatta Mondatta" album. As with most of the Rockpalast shows, picture quality is a little dark but excellent. The sound is also excellent, although the mix could be a bit sharper. The Japan footage seems a bit darker but the sound is a little improved with warmer sound.
Quality Rating: A-- Next To Hamburg (1DVD). 1/11/80. Hamburg, Germany. The Police performed twice on Germany television in 1980. This is the first show, which featured songs from their first two albums. This upgraded source comes from a Super VHS master and is very good, the best I've seen or heard from this show. The performance here is fantastic with lots of raw energy. Songs include "Next To You", "Deathwish", "Born In The 50's", "The Bed's Too Big Without You", "Peanuts", "Fallout" and more. Quality Rating: Video A/A- ; Audio A- Hatfield Polytechnics (1DVD). 2/21/79, Hatfield, UK. Here is a very early show from the Police in front of an English college crowd. How early is it? Sting announces they're about to play a new song for the first time...that song is "Message In A Bottle" which not only became a Police classic, but a staple for radio in general. Sting always believed that song was a hit so it's no surprise the band plays it with such enthusiasm and authority here. As a matter of fact, the entire performance here is great as the band gives a glimpse of what's to come. While the band is playing extremely well, they haven't incorporated many of the nuances that would really add to their live shows later in the year. It's amazing to see how the band progressed in 1979. Check out this show and then watch some of the performances contained on "Outlandos To Synchronicities" and you'll see a band that not only becomes more confident but more technically proficient over a period of months...it's incredible. This isn't the best Police show you'll ever see but it's a great, energetic set with perfect sound and picture quality. This looks like a Japanese laserdisc rip and currently in limbo for official release in Europe and America. Video Preview

Quality Rating:- US Festival + Videos (1DVD). 5/30/83. Glen Helen Park, Devore, CA. Here's their full set at the '83 US Festival. The quality here is okay as the band puts on a rocking performance. The disc is rounded out by an out of print copy of their "Singles" video collection. Now, this collection was just re-released on DVD officially, but surprisngly, not all tracks made it to the new release (probably because Hynde is completely driving this bus). For example, this DVD has "Show Me" and "Day After Day" whereas the new release doesn't. At the same time, the official release has clips not found here ("Night In My Veins", "State Of Independence"). For diehard collectors, you'll want this one.
Quality Rating: Video B/A+ ; Audio A-/A+- Rockpalast (1DVD). Sartory-Säle Köln, Germany, 7/17/81. Here's an excellent, rocking set from the original Pretenders. The band's second album, "Pretenders II" was due out the following month (August) but two songs from it were already hits in Europe, "Message Of Love" and "Talk Of The Town" (both featured here). Within a year of this show, however, the band would never be the same again. Firstly, bass guitarist Pete Farndon was kicked out of the band in June 1982 for drug abuse. Strangely, a mere two days later guitarist James Honeyman-Scott wound up dying from a drug overdose. A devastated Chrissie Hynde was pregnant at the time with Ray Davies' child. Two months after she gave birth, bass guitarist Pete Farndon died from a drug overdose, leaving The Pretenders shattered. If you're a fan of the original lineup, this rare performance is a must. Other songs include "The Adulteress", "Mystery Achievement", "Brass In Pocket", "Stop Your Sobbing", "The Wait" and more. Video Preview

- Montreal '04 (3DVD). Montreal, Canada, 6/20/04. Here's an audience shot DVD mixed with superb soundboard audio. Of note here, the band play their entire "Frizzle Fry" album (which is their best - an amazing album!). If that's not enough, they also play Rush's "La Villa Strangiato", the classic 9 minute instrumental. While they can handle the song technically, Rush fans will miss the emotion that Rush brought to it.

A hilarious moment comes when Les pauses after the opening line and tells the crowd "Boy I opened up a big-ass can of worms there didn't I?". Then he says "Keep the mud to yourself ya sonofabitch". - MSG '04 (2DVD). 7/13/04. Madison Square Garden, New York City. The good news about this 2cam audience show is the performance, which is amazing, bristling with energy and tight musicianship. The downside is the sound quality. The sound is flat and doesn't have much depth so you're left feeling as if you were invited to the party, but could only watch from the outside through a window. You can hear what's going on, but it lacks all punch and therefore I can't really recommend this to anyone other than diehards. Disc 2 also features the last part of his MSG show from the night before on 7/12.

This performance was also beamed to theatres across the country and I believe this is where the footage comes from. Here you get the complete, proshot show along with some post show interviews with fans. As far as I know, this is the only proshot available from the "Musicology" tour and definitely the one to have if you're a fan. The band this time around is heavy on the horns, so all the arrangements tend to be "jazzed" up with lots of flash and instrumental breaks. Candy Dufler is on sax and Prince puts on an amazing performance. The audio could stand to have a bit more punch, but it's still excellent as is the picture quality. Artwork

The show opens with Prince's brilliant performance of "Let's Go Crazy" into "Sign Of The Times" followed by "Kiss"...in a word, amazing. After Prince is inducted by Alicia Keys and Outkast, he joins Jeff Lynn and Tom Petty for a blistering guitar solo on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" which further proves he's one of the most underrated guitarists of our time. There's no doubting that Prince stole the show and offered up arguably the most classy, inspired and energetic performance of any Hall of Fame show to date. Video Preview

I really have no idea what the movie is supposed to be about, but it does feature mostly scenes of Prince performing with a stripped down, 3 piece band. His sound is more raw/guitar oriented and there's even a cover of the Stones' "Honky Tonk Women". Other songs include "The Ride", "Dolphin", "Bambi", "Poor Goo" and more. Approx. 40 mins. Quality Rating:- The Dolphin Collection (1DVD). This disc assembles 11 various television promos/appearances/performances which promoted his "Gold Experience" and "Emancipation" albums. Included here is the video for "Dolphin", a rehearsal of "Billy Jack Bitch", a performance of "Dinner With Delores" from David Letterman, an episode of "The Muppet Show" which features Prince throughout (the entire half-hour European only broadcast is here) , there's even an awesome "Purple Medley" as performed on the World Music Awards. A must for any fans of this era. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A/A+- Tokyo 1990 (1DVD). Tokyo, Japan, 8/31/90. Here's an excellent broadcast from the rarely seen "Nude" tour. What can I say, the show is amazing and includes tunes such as "1999", "Partyman", "Batdance", "Little Red Corvette", "Baby I'm A Star", "Kiss", "Take Me With You" and more. Arguably, the best thing here is the easter egg of Prince's SNL performance of "Batdance", which is probably the best performance that show has ever seen...an incredible reworking of the song. The Prince performance is taken from SNL's 15th Anniversary Special from 1989, touted as the most controversial episode ever, which is why it only aired twice at most - ultra rare! Quality on this footage is B+. Artwork
Quality Rating: A+- Lovesexy '88 (2DVD). Dortmund, Germany, 9/9/88. Here is a German broadcast from the Lovesexy tour. This show didn't fare too well stateside, but in Europe the fans ate it up, as you can clearly see here. Prince puts on an eye popping show complete with and elaborate stage show, female dancers, tight band and even Sheila E on drums (and boy does she whip up a storm...very impressive). Be sure to check out "Purple Rain" here with a mind blowing guitar solo. Overall, a must for any Prince fan. Songs include "Erotic City", "When Doves Cry", "The Cross", "Housequake", "Kiss", "I Wanna Be Your Lover", "1999", "Alphabet St." and much more. Video Preview

- First Avenue (1DVD). 3/21/87. Minneapolis, MN. This looks like a broadcast from the early days of "Sign Of The Times" tour. Prince even mentions the band are still in rehearsals for the tour and he introduces the new backing band. Songs include "Housequake", "Strange Relationship", "Kiss" and more. Audo and video quality are excellent.
Quality Rating: A-- Prince And The Revolution Live (1DVD). 3/30/85. Syracuse, NY. This is a great VHS transfer of this out of print title which documents the Purple Rain tour. The performance is highly fueled here and a must for all fans of this era. Songs include "When Doves Cry", "Purple Rain", "Delirious" and more.
Quality Rating: A+- Video Collection, Vol. 1 (1DVD). From what I understand, this collection was put together by a Prince fan who had access to the Warner Bros. vaults. That would explain why the quality is so high on these videos, many which are extremely rare (if ever aired). This disc features 17 promotional videos from Prince's self-titled debut album through "Purple Rain". Of note is the rarely seen original video for "I Wanna Be Your Lover", which features Prince in these tiny blue shorts along with blue legwarmers - mighty embarrassing to say the least (this video is available as an Easter egg. The official version is here as well). Other highlights include "Controversy", "Let's Pretend We're Married", "When Doves Cry (Long Version)", "Take Me With U (Live)", "I Would Die 4 U (Live)" and more. The video for "Purple Rain" is not here, strangely. If you're a Prince fan, you'll definitely want this one.
Quality Rating: A+- Washington '81 (1DVD). November 21st 1981. Warner Theatre, Washington. USA. This was shot with one camera probably near the back of the venue. However, the zoom brings in the action quite nicely. While the video really isn't too bad at all, it's the sound that appears to have been processed through a cat's a-hole. Really, this is only for diehards and those who want to see what the Controversy tour looked like. The high, flat sound will drive you away within minutes unfortunately.

Queen (see also Saturday Night Live)
- Fancourt (1DVD). 2/19/05. South America. This is the first live performance of Queen with Paul Rodgers, and that sound you're hearing is me frantically scratching my head trying to figure out why they ever thought this was a good idea. Don't get me wrong, Paul Rodgers is an excellent singer and performer within his own world of Bad Company and Free...but he is so out of his element doing Freddie Mercury karaoke it isn't even funny. On the plus side, Brian May and Roger Taylor actually play very well and inspired here (bassist John Deacon had the best idea and stayed home). Throw in some beat Bad Company songs and the setlist takes another turn for the worst. Queen was the first band I ever started collecting as a pre-teen and to see them taking this circus act on the road is an abomination to Freddie's memory and the legend of Queen. The show must not go on. The picture and sound quality are very good here. Songs include "Tie Your Mother Down", "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love", "I Want To Break Free", "A Kind Of Magic", "Feel Like Making Love", "Radio Ga Ga" (Roger on vocals), "All Right Now" and more.
Quality Rating: A-- The Magic Years, Vol. 1-3 (3 DVD). This documentary, made after the band's "Magic" tour in '86 (their last), is a very comprehensive and informative look at the band in their "heyday". Spanning nearly 3 hours, you see lots of rare, archival footage of the band in interviews, backstage parties, making videos, creating in the studio and performing live. Of note is a good 15 minutes of the band creating "One Vision" in the studio. You see Freddie having Roger and Brian do multiple takes on guitar and drums in order to get the right feel. There's also many clips of celebrities weighing in with their thoughts about Queen, including Elton John, Robert Plant, Samantha Fox, Paul McCartney and countless more. If you're a fan of Queen, this is a must-see. If anything, this goes to show exactly what's waiting in the Queen vaults to be released. Most of the concert footage from Earl's Court, Hammersmith Odeon and Hyde Park look excellent here and much better than any bootlegged sources I've seen. Knowing Queen, they are sure to make these available at some point with the best sound and picture possible. The quality here is excellent as is sourced from an out of print laserdisc. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A- Live In Budapest (1DVD). 7/27/86. This show was transferred from the out of print laserdisc to DVD. Here's a show from the final Queen tour and what a show it is. This one seems to rock harder than the Wembley show from this tour. I read this was the largest concert in the Eastern block up to that time. 17 of Hungary's top film cameramen where there to record the event and follow the band relaxing in an around Budapest. This film is the first rock concert to be filmed by Mafilm, the famous Hungarian government film company. It was premiered on 12/12/86 in Budapest's National Congress Hall and presents a unique insight into the Hungarian film making style adapted to Western rock and roll. Songs include "One Vision", "Under Pressure", "Now I'm Here", "Radio Ga Ga" and more. Video Preview

I believe this show took place not too long before their Live Aid performance that summer. This is sourced from a Japanese laserdisc so the quality is great. I wish it were the complete show, but the way Queen handles reissues on DVD, I wouldn't be shocked if the complete show was released one day. Songs include "Tie Your Mother Down", "It's A Hard Life", "Brighton Rock", "Hammer To Fall", "Radio GaGa" and more. Artwork | Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- Live In Japan (1DVD). 11/3/82, Tokyo, Japan. This is taken from a Japanese laserdisc so quality is high. You can find parts of this show as bonus tracks on the now official "On Fire At The Bowl". This laserdisc doesn't feature the complete show and most of the songs are pretty standard for this time, such as "Now I'm Here", "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Crazy Little Thing". However, you do get "Put Out The Fire" here as well as the rarely performed "Teo Torriate".
Quality Rating: A+- Flash Gordon (1DVD). 1980. Queen provided nearly all the music you hear in this film and did a nice job too. I appreciate their work on this film more now than I did back in the day. Their musical arrangements throughout really compliment the scenery in what is an admirable piece of science fiction. This movie, which was meant to be a throwback to the 1930's Flash Gordon television serials, is campy fun, but not throwaway. The movie may have a basic plot but it looks and feels like a comic book. The addition of Max von Sydow as "Ming The Merciless" is what probably saves this movie overall. It's not too often you get a bad guy that comes across with this much authenticity. A new Flash Gordon movie is set for release in 2006 but don't be fooled, with all it's unique qualities, this one may be tough to beat. This is sourced from an out of print DVD. Quality is superb. Quality Rating: Video B ; Audio A- Hyde Park '76 (1PAL DVD). 9/18/76. London, England. Queen's performance was one of many free shows in Hyde Park in late summer '76. This show was in advance of their "Day At The Races" album and features many classic early Queen tunes. For any fan of early Queen this is a must, even if the quality isn't all that great. There is a timecode in the lower left corner which does not distract. The video quality is a few gens down the line and the audio, while not great by any means, is still very listenable. The setlist is chock full of early Queen classics including the opening "Ogre Battle", "Sweet Lady", "Flick Of The Wrist", "White Queen", "March Of The Black Queen", "Son And Daughter" and even "You Take My Breath Away" from the forthcoming "Races" album. Many of the songs played here would never be heard again as they moved into more popular territory. This DVD is a copy of the version that is played at annual Queen conventions and bears the QTV logo in the lower corner. This is the best available version currently in circulation. Video Preview

Songs include the great medley "Bohemian Rhapsody/ Killer Queen/ The March Of The Black Queen/ Bohemian Rhapsody Reprise", "White Queen", "Ogre Battle", "Keep Yourself Alive", "Bring Back That Leroy Brown" and more. - In Concert (1DVD). Universal Amphitheatre, Los Angeles, 8/24/80. With her album "Mad Love" Linda gave her best stab at new wave rock, but didn't really hit the mark convincingly. Sure, some songs played here worked such as "I Can't Let Go", "Hurts So Bad" and "How Do I Make You" but many were blah. However, there is a good amount of hit material here including "It's So Easy", "You're No Good", "Willin'", "Blue Bayou" and more. I would say this is Linda's last hurrah. Right after this she abandoned rock music and hasn't returned since. This video appears to be sourced from an out of print video, although I can't find anything about it. Video Preview

Quality Rating: Video B+ ; Audio B+/B-- Old Grey Whistle Test (1DVD). 11/13/76. London, England. Once upon a time Linda Ronstadt was a rock and roll singer. Listening to Linda evokes some of my earliest music memories as my father would play her 70's albums quite often as I was growing up. Eventually Linda would abandon rock and venture into contemporary classical, adult contemporary and Latin sounds. During her pop/rock years, Linda didn't release drivel either. She not only performed solid songs written by other artists (Buddy Holly, Neil Young, Warren Zevon, to name a few), she always toured with talented musicians as you'll see here (Andrew Gold, Waddy Wachtell). Check the credits on any of her 70's albums and it's a who's who of great artists, including Don Henley, Glen Frey, Emmylou Harris and many more. Here Linda is on her "Hasten Down The Wind" tour. Songs include "Love Is A Rose", "When Will I Be Loved", the Little Feat tune "Willin'", "Love Has No Pride", "Tracks Of My Tears" and much more. The quality is excellent here and must be a master copy because there is a timecode at the bottom of the screen. A must for all Ronstadt fans. Artwork | Video Preview

This tour was a nice return as they hadn't toured since "Tattoo You" from 1981. The band are glad to be back and it clearly shows with this lively, spirited performance. Not only that but those with higher end receivers will love the DTS 5.1 track. As a matter of fact, this 2DVD set boasts 4 audio tracks including 2 channel stereo and regular 5.1. You even see some weird footage of goats along with nude men and women taking a shower backstage, not to mention you also get the last 15 minutes of the George Thorogood set, who opened the show. The 5.1 upgrade of this show is really great both in picture and sound. Some songs from this show were used on the "Still Life" official live album. Quality Rating: A+- Big Cocksucker Blues 5.1 (2DVD). 4 Reel Productions. This is a long out of print tour documentary that is now only being played at Stones fan festivals and will probably never see the light of day. The band is seen not only performing, but backstage as well. Mick and Keith know they are being filmed so you won't see them getting into too much trouble, but some backstage groupies shoot heroine and throw TVs off hotel balconies. You see Dick Cavett ask Bill Wyman "What's running through your nervous system right now?". Keith orders room service while stoned and gives Mick some good advice - it's best to snort coke using a rolled up dollar bill. After meeting Tina Turner Mick comments how he'd like to...well, you get the idea...visit her Nutbush City Limits. It's supposed to show the raucous side of The Stones but it's hard to tell how much is pandering to the camera and what is genuine. Plus, the quality here is downright awful. - Radio City '04, Second Night (2DVD). 8/19/04. Radio City Music Hall, NYC. This is the second night at Radio City and final night of the R30 US tour. This is not better than the 18th show (first night) but it's still pretty nice. For the most part, the 3 cam mix is excellent throughout. The main differences between this one and the first night are the audio. The audio here is kinda flat and could be more full (more bass), but it's definitely listenable. It wouldn't shock me to learn the audio is sourced from one of the camcorders, but overall, it's still pretty good. The first night would be the one to really crank, though.
Quality Rating: Video A+ ; Audio A-- Project R30: New York 01 DVD (3DVD). 8/18/04. Radio City Music Hall, NYC. Yes, this has been worth the wait. Yes, it does live up to the hype. Not only is this the best DVD to emerge from the R30 tour, it's arguably the best Rush video bootleg ever. What we have here is a superb 3 cam audience mix along synced with top notch DAT audio. The three cameras do an awesome job of capturing the action. You have one camera that's dead center along with one cam on each side that often go in for nice, waist level close-ups of the band. The show begins with an excellent, dead on center view of the overhead screen, so the opening album cover montage and Stiller intro are nicely captured. At times you'll think it's a professionally filmed show, that's how great the close-ups are on this. Geddy has said in interviews that playing New York City is always a tour highlight. On this night the band is playing very enthusiastically - a top notch performance. I'm watching this DVD and can't believe my eyes...this has got to be the best Rush audience boot I've ever seen! Totally off the hook, my friends! This will be a very popular and heavily traded show...an absolute must for any and all Rush fans. Enjoy!!. NOTE: There are a few versions of this show trading around. This is the best available version, spread over 3DVDs with updated DAT audio. The 2DVD version includes camcorder audio that is pretty good, but not close to this. Video Preview, Preview 2

This DVD has some nice shots of the band and if you're into the second half of the show you will probably like this more. I found the first DVD to be out of sync to the point where it's annoying to watch. However, the second DVD is synced well and there's many nice closeups. The overall sound is pretty good, definitely nowhere near the Vegas or Nashville DVDs but still enjoyable.
Quality Rating: Video A+ ; Audio A-- Project R30 Las Vegas - Audio DVD (1DVD). 7/17/04. MGM Grand Arena, Las Vegas, NV. Here is a nice sounding audience boot on DVD instead of CD this time around. What makes a DVD audio boot better than a CD? A DVD has better dynamic range, so when the source tape is converted to DVD there's much more room to work with than a CD. This is not the best sounding show from the R30 tour, but among the best. A great souvenir if you were at the show. Nice menus as well.
Quality Rating: A- Rush Cubed - The Power of 3 (2DVD). This was a pleasant surprise. Just when I thought I had enough video from this tour (not to mention the great official "R30" release), this one stands out from the bunch. What I like most about this show is the amazing sound. Not only does it sound like you're in the arena, the balance of all the instruments is near perfect...among the best audience recordings I've heard. The video is fantastic as well with a maximum of 3 audience cameras providing the action onstage. Granted, you don't see all 3 cams at work all the time. However, the remaining 2 are mixed well together. If you're a fan of this tour and looking for an alterative to the official R30, this is for you! Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- Project R30 DVD (2DVD). 5/29/04 Nashville, TN. The first video boot to emerge from the R30 tour and it's from opening night as well. Sometimes you get a video boot and you like the camera shots but aren't crazy about the sound. In this case you'll love the audio and wish the camera was just a bit steadier, did more zooms...oh well. That being said, this is a pretty excellent release. The picture quality is very clear and the band can be seen in most shots. The most common angle shows the full band from a distance at dead center (reminds me of "Visual Chemistry") When available, the taper does make good use of the overhead video monitors. The audio is what shines here...a top notch audience recording that rivals most any video boot I've seen period. The audio track for this DVD is taken from the "Project R30" release. At the beginning of the show the taper remains sitting down and can only see the overhead video screen so you don't see the band for about the first 20mins. If you like the acoustic set you'll want this DVD because it's captured pretty nicely here. "Resist" uses the overhead video feed while "Heart Full Of Soul" is a nice dead on view. It's nice to finally see the show that I've been listening to since the tour started. If you love "30 Years Stronger" and want to see that show pick this one up.
Quality Rating: A- SARS Relief Concert (1DVD). 07/30/03 Toronto, Canada. This is a video of the complete, unedited set that Rush performed at the SARS Relief concert in Toronto, Canada in 2003. From what I understand, the Rolling Stones own the footage to this show so someone from their camp must have leaked this. The quality here is perfect...must be a digital copy of the master or maybe 1 generation at most. The sound is generally excellent as well. Every so often Geddy's mike will cut out or some strange audio glitch will occur, but overall it's a very sharp mix from the board (arguably better than Rio). There were a few channels that broadcast this entire event but only two or three songs from Rush's set ever aired and anything more was simply used as brief cut-ins. So having a complete, unedited set is amazing. The band are in fine form, having been off the road since November 2002 (Rio). The set here is only 35 minutes long, which means you're pretty much treated to the essentials, including a cool, abbreviated instrumental version of the Stones' "Paint It Black" (ala 2112 style). I should also mention that this DVD also includes the complete, 12 song AC/DC set as a bonus. A must for all Rush fans. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- By-Tor And The Pink Wig (2DVD). 11/6/02 East Rutherford, NJ. This is probably the best video boot to surface so far from the highly anticipated and well received Vapor Trails tour. The cameraman knows the tunes well and that helps with the shots, which are well timed and shot very close and tight. The reason for the title of this video is found in an Easter Egg on Disc2, where you'll see a young lady appear on stage until taken away by security. The woman, incidentally, is the wife of the man who did the artwork for this set. Even if you already own the Rio DVDs, this is still a great addition to any collection.
Quality Rating: A- Boston '02 (3DVD). Boston, MA. The video for this show was originally squeezed onto one disc. The producer of this title decided to preserve that video (which was kinda shaky to begin with) by syncing it with better DAT audio and spreading it over 3DVDs. The audio and video here are pretty raw (especially the video) but the camera stays focused on the action and the audio is fairly sharp.
Quality Rating: Video B ; Audio B+- Home Again Toronto (2DVD). 10/22/02, Toronto, Canada. There are a few versions of this show floating around. This one is labeled "A Lividz Production". The video here is pretty nice as the taper makes good use of the overhead screens and is able to stay focused on the band. The audio is just okay and doesn't sound like it was synced to another (better) source.
Quality Rating: Video A+ ; Audio B- Baltimore '02 (2DVD). 10/15/02 Baltimore, MD. This show is a personal favorite not only because I was there, but I also got the chance to meet Geddy and Alex backstage before the show. However, I'll try not to let that affect my judgment! Actually, I don't really have to because the show speaks clearly for itself and that is...this is probably among the best video boots from the Vapor Trails tour. The show is complete, you can clearly see each band member through a mixture of close-ups and full body shots. The only drawbacks are that you rarely get to see the entire band performing at the same time, usually it's on one member at a time. Luckily, the guy who filmed this knew the songs well enough to catch key moments on film, such as solos or other spots worthy of seeing. By the way, the person who filmed this was in the middle, right of the arena and was able to get excellent shots. The sound is pretty average as well for an audience. The camera is probably on the band 90% of the time. There are brief moments where the camera is obstructed, but it's mostly on the action. I remember this show to be pretty incredible. Alex's guitar playing was hot, especially on "Working Man". He also cracked up Neil with his rant this evening. I would definitely recommend this show to any Rush fan.
Quality Rating: A- Matrix '02 (2 DL DVD). Atlanta, GA, 10/13/02. I'm starting to think everyone in the Atlanta audience had a tape recorder or knew the sound guy due to the amount of both audio and video shows that have emerged from this night. Here is an awesome mixture of 3 audience cameras with a matrix of an audience recording and a scanner/monitor mix. If it weren't for the official "Rush In Rio" release, this would be a more essential show. My only complaint here is the inclusion of the audience recording in the matrix. While the bottom end adds nice depth, the highs have some flutter that are a little distracting in places. I would have preferred the audio from "One Little Victory" in it's place, or at least more prominent in the mix. A great live DVD and definitely the best video to emerge from the Vapor Trails tour.
Quality Rating: A/A+- Vaporizing Atlanta (1DVD). Atlanta, GA, 10/13/02. I know many many months were poured into the production of this gem from the Vapor Trails tour. The 1 cam video has been synced to an equalized, high quality DAT source (mixed into 5.1 as well) to make for an excellent video boot from that tour. The camera stays focused on the band making this one of the most enjoyable video shows to emerge from the tour. Highly recommended.
Quality Rating: A- A Taste Of Earthly Luminescence (1DVD). 7/12/02, Tweeter Center, Mansfield, MA. This is an incomplete show from one of the finest VT shows. Really the best part of this DVD is everything from 2112 on. If you're really into that part of the show you'll want to check this out. The filmer does a good job of staying steady on the band throughout most and the great audio track makes it even more enjoyable.
Quality Rating: A- Vapor Tales (1VCD). 7/01/02 (airdate). Here's an interesting "documentary" of sorts on Rush...something you don't see too often, if ever. This show aired on Canada's "Much More Music" television channel, something not many commercial satellite companies offer, making this quite rare. I say "documentary" because it doesn't really take you album-by-abum the way a Behind The Music episode would. It skips around to highlights in the band's career, often jumping back and forth between the present and past. The neat thing here is all the archival interview and performance footage of the band, some of it rarely if ever before seen. For instance, there's a nice short interview from the "Permanent Waves" era with Geddy donning the huge monacles and Alex sporting the curly blonde hair. There's footage from their Juno Hall of Fame acceptance speech and exclusive performance footage from 1976, interview footage from 1991 (including Neil) and more. Tagged onto the end of this show as a bonus is the interview with Anthony DeCurtis of Rolling Stone. Here, the band take you track by track through "Vapor Trails" and give their thoughts on the songs. The running time is just over 76min and the picture quality is excellent. This VCD will play on your CD-ROM as well as in most newer DVD Players. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A- Chronicles, Book II (1DVD). Here's a very nice compilation of Rush videos from throughout their career, focusing mostly on the 70's and 90's. This has the best picture and sound for these videos that I have seen to date, particularly "La Villa" from Pinkpop '79, which is absolutely superb in quality. The only drawback - it's not the full version of "La Villa" as it's joined in the middle section. There's also a brief backstage moment with the band as Alex talks about his problematic guitar finger. If you've never seen this footage from PinkPop, this DVD is worth the trade alone as it's the only proshot video from the "Hemispheres" tour available. The menus are nice and obviously done in the same style as the official "Chronicles" release. Video Preview
Quality Rating: Video B/A+ ; Audio B/A+- L.A. Forum '96 (2DVD). 11/26/96, Los Angeles, CA. Here's a nice video boot from the Test For Echo tour. The camera catches most of the show from Alex's side and quite often you get nice full shots as well. Taper also does a good job of closing in on solo spots. The sound quality is bright and most everything can be heard just fine.
Quality Rating: A- Aztec & Maya (2DVD) 11/6/96, Philadelphia, PA. A very nice bootleg video from early in the "Test For Echo" tour. The beginning is a bit shaky camera-wise, but things improve after "Driven". There are two cameras at work here.
Quality Rating: Video A ; Audio: A-- A Torn Up Photograph (1DVD) 10/20/96, Buffalo, NY. This is a pretty nice video boot from the TFE tour. The camera is on Alex's side and able to capture nice close-ups of all three bandmembers. The sound is also very good for this one. The set starts off with "The Big Money" because the Intro/Dreamline part had some cuts that took away from the overall quality. However, the good news is that the Intro/Dreamline opener can be found as an Easter Egg on this disc. Not the definitive TFE tour video boot, but worth checking out.
Quality Rating: A- Initial Reflections (2DVD) 10/19/96, Albany, NY. Probably the best video boot to emerge from the TFE tour (opening night, to be exact). It reminds me of "A View From The Palace", probably because of the multiple angles and fine editing. Audio-wise, it's a pretty good audience source and overall, a fine video boot. Highly recommended. Video Preview, Preview 2.
Quality Rating: A- YYZed (3VCD) This is a direct transfer from the original 8mm video tape so picture quality is excellent (better than a first generation VHS copy). Since it's an amateur video (one camera) it does have it's flaws, such as every now and then you'll see the back of someone's head or nothing at all if the taper needed to hide the camera for security reasons. Another drawback is that because of where the taper was standing, Geddy's keyboard is blocking the view of Neil. Now, you do get shots of Neil on the overhead screen, but most shots are either of Alex or Geddy. Also, since it's not on a tripod the camera can be a bit shaky at times, but it's never so bad that it takes away from the video, in my opinion. Certainly, when you watch a video boot, you have to lower your standards a bit because it's not professionally produced (as are most things we see). There are positives, however...as I mentioned, the picture quality is very clear and overall excellent. The sound, while audience sourced, is actually quite good. It could use some more bottom end, but if you like highs this one has it. Each track is indexed (which is not too common with VCD boots) which allows you to access any track very easily. The only drawback to this is if you're watching the show from beginning to end there is a split second pause between each track. However, this is a small price to pay for being able to easily navigate around this 3VCD set. I noticed there was a crane moving around during the show, supposedly to document it for a future DVD release...however, for right now, YYZed is one of the only video "records" that we have of this tour or time in Rush history.
Quality Rating: A-- The Big Apple Box (2DVD) 3/8/94 MSG, New York, NY. Here is an excellent video boot from the Counterparts tourstop in Madison Square Garden, NY. If you're a big fan of this tour I would definitely pick this up. It's not as good as Auburn Hills, but it's close.
Quality Rating: A- A Farewell To The Gardens (2DVD) 5/7/94 Toronto, Canada. This 2DVD set is definitely one of the best Rush video boots out there. Firstly, it's a historic performance in that it's their last at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Not only that but you get a first generation video feed combined with a soundboard ("Animated") recording...overall, very impressive. The "Palace" DVD edges this one out, in my opinion, only because it features more angles and is better edited. However, this one provides clear, balanced sound and very clear visuals which tend to favor Geddy and Neil just because of where the camera is situated. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A- A View From The Palace (2DVD) 3/22/94 Auburn Hills, MI. You've heard this before probably with the "Critical Mass" boot, but have you seen the show? If not, you should pick this one up. This is a pro shot (multi-camera) video of a stop on the Counterparts tour. You see nothing but the band performing (no backs-of-head shots) and fortunately the sound is off the board making this a nicer package that most video boots. There are some transfer artifacts which sound more like tracking issues and they arise from time to time, but otherwise, this is a very enjoyable show. When it comes to video boots, you can't get much better than this. Video Preview, Preview 2
Quality Rating: A+- Left To Chance (2DVD). 6/1/92, Lawlor Events Center, Reno, Nevada. Here is a very nice audience cam from the "Roll The Bones" tour. If you're a fan of this tour, you'll definitely want this boot as it has some great closeups and audio is excellent as well.
Quality Rating: A- Dem Bones (1DVD) 12/12/91, Albany, NY. The audio quality here is excellent for an audience source. The video quality is actually quite good as well...the only problem is that the camerawork is a bit shaky. However, the taper does a good job of staying focused on the action. If you're a Bones tour fan, here's your souvenir. Video Preview
Quality Rating: Video A ; Audio B+- Mountain Views (1DVD). 6/27/90. Here is yet another in-house video feed from the Presto Tour. The quality here isn't too bad, definitely watchable. The sound is right off the board, but unfortunately, a bit flat and in mono. Since it's an in-house feed you see all the videos and animation included for the show. High recommended for fans of this tour!
Quality Rating: B- Available Light (1DVD). 3/8/90, Auburn Hills, MI. Here is an in-house video feed from the Presto Tour...a rare find! The main issue here is the quality, which I believe was intentionally degraded because the hoarder of the master wants to do quality control over what's in circulation. Hopefully a better source will emerge one day (as did with "A View From The Palace", same venue on Counterparts tour). The video quality isn't all that bad, not great by any means, but watchable. The audio is okay here. If this had been a 1 cam audience show with the same sound I would probably skip over this one. However, what saves this release is that it's proshot. Yeah, the video quality is not on average with what's available but having multiple angles makes this, surprisingly, a very refreshing experience. If you're a fan of the Presto era you'll want this. Quality Rating: Video: B- ; Audio: B+- Quebec City (1DVD). 3/3/86. Quebec, Canada. Here's an audience shot from the "Power Windows" tour. I think the janitor had the cam mounted on his broom handle. Actually, it's not that bad. The quality here is not great at all, but you can check out what's going on. I never saw this tour so it was interesting for that. The angle is fine and taper does a good job of staying on the band but the video is a bit dark and the sound not so great, but you do get to see them perform "Middletown Dreams", a rare live gem. For diehards only.
Quality Rating: C- Montreal '84 (1DVD). 7/12/84. Montreal, Canada. This is an audience shot from the "Grace Under Pressure" tour. The quality here, unfortunately, is not too good. However, it's not totally unwatchable. You do get to see them perform "Afterimage", which is extremely rare as they didn't play it much on that tour or anytime since.
Quality Rating: C- Through The Camera Eye (1DVD). This is an excellent transfer from the out-of-print VHS. This video collection was released in 1985 and does contain a few videos not found on the Chronicles DVD, including "The Body Electric", "Vital Signs" and "Tom Sawyer". The video for "Vital Signs" is much the same as "Limelight" in that it shows the band performing at LeStudio. The version of "Tom Sawyer" on the Chronicles DVD is also from the "Le Studio" performance, but the one found on this tape is lifted from the "Exit Stage Left" video. The transfer on this one is quite excellent, with rarely any pixellation to be found. If you don't own the VHS, or if you're looking for a digital copy for the archives, this is a must. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- Visual Chemistry (1DVD) 4/8/83, Montreal, Canada. Considering it's age, this boot isn't bad at all. As a matter of fact, it's a pretty nice visual document of their Signals tour. Most of the show is shot from one angle and that's head on where you can see the entire stage and all three are in view at all times, almost as if you were sitting in the balcony. The sound isn't bad either making this a must have if you're really into the Signals era. In my opinion, this tour boasted their best setlist ever! Video Preview
Quality Rating: A-- Live At The Capital Theatre (1DVD). 12/10/76. Passaic, New Jersey. Yes folks, the day an early Rush gig is unearthed on DVD has arrived. At this point the band is still an opening act on the "All The World's A Stage" tour, which is why we only get a 40min set. Regardless, it's unheard of nowadays to find any complete shows from this era. The footage here is black and white. The lighting is a little dark, but overall, not a problem. The picture is fairly clear as well. There is a timecode present and the words ME-48 just below center on the screen, but neither really distract. As for the performance, the boys are smoking here. The still pictures on the "All The World's A Stage" live album come to life when you watch this...a real treat. One other note, Neil doesn't get too much camera time. There is another version of this show called "Caught In The Act" which has the timecode and "me-48" blurred out and darker video - not recommended. However, if you're fan of early Rush, this is the one you've been waiting for. Video Preview
Quality Rating: Video B+ ; Audio A-- Don Kirshner + More (1DVD). Here is a compilation of rare early Rush promotional videos and appearances. The quality ranges from crappy but watchable to pretty good. Luckily the best stuff on here doesn't look all that bad, in particular the Don Kirshner Rock Special appearance. This is a really rare glimpse at Rush live in 1975 just after Fly By Night was released. The videos for "Circumstances" and "La Villa" are very similar to "The Trees" which is on the Chronicles DVD. Another nice thing about "Circumstances" is that it's performed live w/o an audience as was "Trees". The promotional videos for the "A Farewell To Kings" album are the best quality here and are not performed live. I wish the quality were better but if you're into seeing how early Rush looked and sounded, check this out.
Quality Rating: C+/B+- '75 8mm (1DVD). Rochester, NY 1975. I never thought I'd be adding a DVD from the COS tour to my list but fortunately there is a first time for everything. This isn't your average video boot. This 8mm silent video is taken from two shows on the Caress Of Steel tour. I'm told one is from Rochester, but no firm date or venue was given. It's definitely from that tour because of Neil's bass drumhead and there's also a "Caress Of Steel" banner with the album cover hanging above the stage. The footage is amazing for it's age. The video comes across as a montage of amateur footage from the tour, with many nice close-ups and surprising clarity. The camera is a bit shaky but it's tolerable. Since the footage is silent, the only known audience boot from this tour was synced to run with the footage (Rockford, IL). The audio and video are not in sync at all. The footage runs for about 50 minutes, some of which may be repeated from time to time. This is some of the earliest, not to mention rarest Rush footage you will ever see.

Santana
- Santiago '92 (1DVD). 12/4/92. Pre-broadcast DVD video - Complete Show - 134 minutes
- 1982 US Festival, 9/4/82, dual timecoded, 46mins, rare show!, 1DVD, A-
- Concert For The Americas (1DVD). 8/22/82. Dominican Republic, South America. Here is a nice upgrade to this show. My last copy had a noticeably poor picture, but this is very clear and bright. The sound has some bottom and not nearly as flat as before. Both Santana and Heart are on this disc. Heart perform "Crazy On You", "Magic Man", "Barracuda" and more. Santana follows but a thunderstorm aborts their set after only a few songs (all included here to watch unfold). As a matter of fact, you can hear the thunder right from the first song. In what looked like a Spinal Tap moment, int he middle of the first song an announcer can be heard telling the audience the band would continue to play through the rain! Their set included "All I Wanted", "Improv Jam" and "Black Magic Woman". It's during the latter when the torrential rains, thunder and lightning forced not only the end of their set, but the complete show. Video Preview

Saturday Night Live
- Performances (1DVD). Here's a collection of performances from Saturday Night Live over the years (most unreleased). Some performances are rare ("Under Pressure" by Queen), some are US television debuts (The Fixx, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Queen), some are strange (Abba), there's also 4 songs by The Kinks from their two early 80's appearances ("Do It Again", "Word Of Mouth", "Destroyer", "Art Lover"), there's Ben Folds Five ("Brick") and two killer funk performances from James Brown. There's also clips from The Notting Hillbillies, Sting, Eddy Grant and Stone Temple Pilots.

Scandal
- Videos & More (1DVD). Here is a compilation of live clips, videos and TV specials promoting this short lived band. For the most part, Scandal is the musical equivalent to loose bowels, but fans will definitely enjoy. The disc starts out with some live, proshot clips from the band in 1983 ("Love's Got A Line On You", "All I Want", "Goodbye To You") then goes into videos from not only Scandal ("Warrior", "Goodbye To You", "Got A Line") but also some clips from Patty's solo career ("No Mistakes", "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough"). The best part of the collection is probably the "Where Are The Now?" segment and "Bands Reunited" where all the original band members are tracked down and perform together again one more time. The quality here ranges from very good to excellent. Video Preview

Bob Seger
- Largo '80 (1DVD). Largo, MD. 1980. Silver Stallion Productions. Here's a rare proshot from Seger on his "Against The Wind" tour. The good news - the setlist is absolutely killer here boasting such tunes as "You'll Accompany Me", "Mainstreet", "Her Strut", "Fire Lake", "Turn The Page", "Night Moves", "We've Got Tonight", "Hollywood Nights", "Katmandu" and much more. The bad news, the video source is bit high gen so both sound and video are fairly good at best. This version of the show is the best available, however, if anyone does have a nice low gen source, please let me know. Artwork

Tommy Shaw (also see Styx, Damn Yankees)
- Twice The Girls, Twice The Show (1DVD). 11/30/84. Montgomery, AL. and 4/2/85, South Bend, IN. Here's Tommy going it solo after leaving Styx. Having once been the headline act with Styx, now Tommy and his band are playing smaller clubs and doing opening act duties. However, that doesn't seem to bother him as he does well as a solo act. The Montgomery show features performances and interviews with management, band members, fans and even his own parents. The South Bend show is more of a straight on show. Quality for both shows (proshot) are great. Richie Cannata (formely with Billy Joel) plays sax for these shows. Songs include "Renegade", "Girls With Guns", "Crystal Ball", "Lonely School", "Too Much Time On My Hands", "Head's Up", "Come In And Explain" and more. Shaw fans will love it. Artwork

Paul Simon
- BBC One Sessions (1DVD). LSO St. Luke's, London's Shoreditch. 11/5/06. Paul Simon is one of those artists who continually move into new directions, whether it's in the studio or performing live. His latest album lived up to it's name ("Surprise") as he teamed up with producer Brian Eno who gave a whole new soundscape to Simon's storytelling style. A few of those songs are featured here ("Outrageous", "How Can You Live In The Northeast") as well as past favorites ("You Can Call Me Al", "Late In The Evening", "Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes") and even some from his early days with Garfunkel ("Me And Julio", "The Boxer"). Plus, there's a few bonus performances from the same show as well. The quality is perfect from a digital broadcast and the performance is great. Simon gives most songs, regardless of their history, a new sound that fits perfectly within the boundaries of his band. A must for all Simon fans.

Quality Rating: A+- Twice Over Europe (1DVD). 3/12/85. Ahoy, Rotterdam & 7/24/84 Dortmund, Germany. Here are a couple of 2nd or 3rd generation broadcasts. The first is the band playing Rotterdam on their "Once Upon A Time" tour. The video quality is pretty good but the audio is lacking here. The sound is not only flat, but there's a fair amount of hiss as well, so you can't really crank it. Songs include "All The Things She Said", "Ghost Dancing", "Alive And Kicking" and more. The other broadcast has the same picture quality, but the sound is better. Songs here include "Up On The Catwalk", "Waterfront", "Promised You A Miracle" and more. Artwork

Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes
- The Collection (2DVD). 8/31/78 w/Bruce, Stone Pony '91, Milan '92. I have alot of people ask me over the years, "who the hell is Southside Johnny?". Imagine Bruce Springsteen in a good mood without something important to say - that's pretty much Southside Johnny. His songs sound like they're straight out of Jersey - a good mix of rock and soul, with memorable harmonies and plenty of horns. Johnny's songs seem to deal with love either lost or found and always delivered with heart. Max Weinberg is on drums. Songs include "Trapped Again", "I Don't Wanna Go Home", "The Fever", a video for "It's Been A Long Time" w/Springsteen and Little Steven. The 2nd DVD is a show from the following year in Milan 3/22/92. Quality is about the same. The Artwork lists material from Cleveland '78 but that is not found here. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- Soundstage '79 (1DVD). It's a shame Southside Johnny never got out of the shadow of friends Bruce Springsteen, Little Steven or even Jon Bon Jovi because he is such a talent. Hailing from New Jersey, Johnny is a phenomenal singer and his band, complete with horns, is amazingly tight and incredible to watch perform. I remember watching this with my father back in 1979 on PBS. As a matter of fact, it was my father who first introduced me to Southside Johnny and I still appreciate his music after all these years. If anyone has a clean source for this show, definitely let me know. Songs include "I Don't Want To Go Home", "Trapped Again" and much more. The quality here isn't great but it's definitely watchable and enjoyable. A must for all fans.

Spandau Ballet
- Over Britain - Live In London (1DVD). 5/1/83, England. I'm not sure if this was ever an official title, but it's a proshot performance from the band at their peak. Often shrugged off as a flash in the pan, these guys actually had some substance beneath the slick exterior. Not everything was drippy, just check out "Instinction" with it's jumping bass line, no doubt influenced by Trevor Horn, who produced the studio version. Other songs include "Gold", "True" and more. Spin Doctors
- Woodstock '94 (1DVD).Upstate NY. This band was real hot in the mid-90's and then disappeared. Well, they didn't actually go away as they did release a few more albums after "Pocket Full Of Kryptonite", however none were well received and the band wound up folding. During their "buzz" time, they were hip to playing any outdoor venue, anytime anywhere. At Woodstock, they rocked and put on a great show. Frumpy singer Chris Barron can get on your nerves after a while with his monotone delivery, but the band is grooving nicely throughout. Songs include "Two Princes", "Big Fat Funky Booty" and more.

Split Enz (also see Crowded House)
- Live Concert 1981 + Holmes Show 2002 (1DVD). Sydney, Australia 3/30/81 and New Zealand 12/10/02. Here's a pair of shows from Enz at two very different times in their careers. The first is a classic show from the "Corroboree" tour, which appears to be sourced from a broadcast. I'm not aware of an official release of this show, if anyone knows differently let me know. Songs include "Hard Act To Follow", "I Don't Wanna Dance", "One Step Ahead", "Walking Through The Ruins", "Shark Attack", "I Got You" and more. The picture quality is a little dark and the audio could have more depth, but overall can be enjoyable to the more diehard fan. The other show on this DVD is the more interesting. In 2002 the band reunited on a yacht in New Zealand as part of a television show hosted by a man named Mr. Holmes. This show actually takes place 30 years from the date of the band's first ever show at the Wynyard Tavern. Here the band are looking older and about 8 members from over the years show up to play. The show is a mixture of live performances (not enough) and interviews with not only band members but also "Frenz Of The Enz", which is the official fan club of the band. If anything, this is an interesting viewing for diehards only.
Quality Rating: Video A-/A+ ; Audio A-/A+- Split Enz Video LP (1DVD). Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. 1982. If you're an Enz fan this is "the shit". Taken from their "Time And Tide" tour (arguably, their last great tour as they would break up 2 years later), this is the band in their prime with an arsenal of great songs behind them. Not only that, but the quality here is superb as this is sourced from a long out of print laserdisc. Songs include "One Step Ahead", "Lost For Words", "Six Months In A Leaky Boat", "Dirty Creature", "Shark Attack", "History Never Repeats" and more. Fans will be in heaven! Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- Wellington Town Hall (1DVD). New Zealand, 1979. See my explanation for "Sight And Sound" for the origins of this video. In addition, this was apparently a TV broadcast in New Zealand made upon returning from a world tour. There’s a short interview stint followed by a well played live set in the main amphitheater of the Wellington Town Hall. The show is a little less theatric than the 1977 one, but the sound is good and the picture is fine. The color was a little washed out in the fan club original, and like "Sight And Sound", the sound was sort of flat. This version has been fixed to provide better picture and audio. Songs include "Give It A Whirl", "Bold As Brass", "Stuff & Nonsense", "I See Red" and more.
Quality Rating: A- Sight And Sound (1DVD). England, 1977. This proshot and another show ("Wellington Town Hall") were restored by the Enz themselves to include on their Import/PAL only DVD release but then they ended up only using one song. Apparently the restored show in its entirety was given to their fan club on a DVD with the Wellington show. The fan club release sounded rather flat and uninspired so it was "punched up" a bit to help it match the environment the shows are taking place. Also, this show was still rather dark, so it was lightened it up a touch in the conversion from PAL to NTSC. As for the performance, this is classic Enz. The band are decked out in outrageous outfits, wearing full face makeup and acting about a nutty as a squirrel turd. Tim Finn's brother, Neil Finn, had just joined the band. Songs include "Bold As Brass", "My Mistake", "Charlie", "Crosswords" and more.

Bruce Springsteen
- Glastonbury '09 (1DVD). 6/27/09, pro, 1DVD, A+
- 3 (2DVD). 9/13/03, FedEx Field, Washington, D.C. This one is heralded as the best Boss boot around, especially from his '03 tour. The show kicks off with a nice tribute to Johnny Cash ("I Walk the Line"). You'll also get the tour premiere of "Paradise" and "Pink Cadillac". Other interesting tunes are the rare "Human Touch" and "Jungleland". This is a 4 audience cam mix with excellent picture quality and above average audio. This reminds me of the Rush R30 show from Radio City...fans will love it! This also features a bonus called "The Boss In Beantown" with some interviews.
Quality Rating: Video A+ ; Audio A- Whole Lotta Rosie (1DVD). 7/26/84, CNE Grandstand. Toronto, Canada. This release is very similar to "Do You Love Me" released by Right Stuff with some changes. The footage of "Rosalita" has been fixed, making it the first time a complete and uncut version of the song has made it onto DVD. Also, there is bonus footage with this version. While all of the footage here has been previously circulated, there are changes, particularly with "Stand On It" from the Meadowlands '85, which has been saved from bad sound editing (not in the the prior releases). Another nice feature of this DVD is the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track. Overall, great proshot picture and sound with an impressive tracklist, including "Hungry Heart", "Dancing In The Dark", "Fire", "No Surrender", "Because The Night", "Jungleland", "Born To Run" and more. There's also bonus tracks from other cities, including "Cover Me" (Philly '84), "Born In The USA" (Philly '84) and more. Fans will love this one! Video Preview

Squeeze (also see Mike & The Mechanics)
- Squeeze Play (1DVD). One word says it all - boring. This is sourced from an out of print VHS and the quality on the first few videos leave little to be desired. Quality improves as things move along, especially once you get to "Tempted". Watching Squeeze videos is about as enjoyable as watching paint dry. Actually, with paint you may sniff some fumes so I take that back. The other annoying thing about this video collection is that each song is not indexed so you have to fast forward through most of it. Songs include "Hourglass", Up The Junction", "Pulling Mussels" , "Messed Around" and more. For diehards only.
Quality Rating: Video A ; Audio B+/A- MTV Spring Break '88 (1DVD). Daytona Beach, 3/18/88. Here is a broadcast of their full set from MTV's Spring Break. The band wouldn't continue too much longer under this configuration, and that's a shame. Here the band turns in a very solid performance which features Gilson Lavis' impressive tight drumming, Jools Holland's sharp keyboards, not to mention the underrated guitar playing of Glen Tilbrook. Songs here include an amazing version of "Pulling Mussels From A Shell", "Tempted", "Trust Me To Open My Mouth", a great "Hourglass" and much more. A must for fans.
Quality Rating: A+- LA Country Club '81 (1DVD). Los Angeles, CA. 7/6/81. Here is an MTV broadcast from their early days, when they actually showed rock concerts. The quality here is very good, considering it's age. Paul Carrack is with the band at this time and I'd say it's a must for all fans. Songs include "If I Didn't Love You", "Another Nail In My Heart", "Take Me I'm Yours", "Tempted", "Pulling Mussells", "Goodbye Girl" and more.

Steely Dan
- Charlotte 2006 (1DVD). 8/12/06, Charlotte, NC. Here's an excellent proshot from their tour with Michael McDonald, who was a part of the Steely Dan studio band in the 70's. Michael joins the band after about an hour and stays until the end. Overall a great performance and a treat to see McDonald with them again. Songs include "Time Out Of Mind", "I Got The News", "Aja", "Josie", "Dirty Work" (w/vocals by the ladies), "Showbiz Kids" (w/McDonald on vocals), "Do It Again", "FM", "Don't Take Me Alive" and more. A must for all fans!
Quality Rating: A+- Michigan 2003 (2DVD). Detroit, MI. 8/11/03. The audio version of this show is known as "Caves". It's easily the highest quality of all the Steely Dan shows I've seen. Both audio and video are from the in-house0 feed and top notch. This band has been touring on and off so much over the years they've added some nice deeper cuts into their setlist, such as "Aja", "Caves of Altamira", "Haitian Divorce" (vocal Becker), "Don't Take Me Alive", "Parker's Band" and even some of the lesser played hits such as "Time Out Of Mind", "Hey Nineteen" and "FM". The band has added some new members and everyone shines...an excellent show from the "Everything Must Go" tour. If you're a fan of the Dan, you must have this one. Artwork 1, 2
Quality Rating: A+- PNC 2003 (1DVD).8/17/03 Holmdel, NJ. Here's an excellent board audio/video feed of the band from the "Everything Must Go" tour. The quality isn't quite as sharp as you'd expect from a video monitor feed, but it's plenty good. The sound is bright and no lows are to be found, but all instruments are clear in the mix. Hopefully more shows like this will emerge with DVD boots on the rise. I'm sure any Dan fan would love this one. Full show. The tracks are not fully indexed. Songs include "Caves Of Altamira", "Don't Take Me Alive", "Peg", "Godwhacker", "Time Out Of Mind", "Babylon Sisters", "Janie Runaway" and more.

Quality Rating: A+- Storytellers (1DVD). February 2000. Sony Studios, New York. Here the band performs in a rare intimate setting, taking questions from the audience and sharing stories about some of their favorite songs. Becker and Fagen fit nicely into this format and their dry, sarcastic wit keeps things moving. Songs include "Peg", "Kid Charlemagne", "Bad Sneakers" and more.
Quality Rating: A+- Art Crimes '96 (1DVD). 7/21/96, Virginia. Here's a video feed of the VA show below. It's the full show, quality is excellent with many nice camera angles. This is probably one of my favorite shows now, especially after being a fan of the audio portion for so many years - this is a treasure. As for the audio, it comes right off the board and has a warmer feeling than the cds, I think. Highlights include "Any Major Dude", "Green Earrings", "Jack Of Speed", which appeared on their album "Two Against Nature". It also features a song that never appeared on the album called "Wet Side Story". This set also includes "I.G.Y.", "Any World", "Midnight Cruiser", "Glamour Profession" and much more. This is a must for any Dan fan. Artwork

This is an in-house video feed from Steely Dan about 1 month into their reunion tour...a tour that would continue over many summers to come, include 2 new albums and eventually a Grammy award. This was the start of another chapter in Dan history. The video quality is excellent, sound is very good too. Sure, it could use a bit more bottom end, but everything can be hear pretty clearly here. Every so often you'll hear some minor tracking sounds but overall an enjoyable listen. Songs include "Green Earrings", "Home At Last", "IGY", "Tomorrow's Girls", the rarely played "Reeling In The Years", "Countermoon", "My Old School" and more.

Rod Stewart
- The Rod Stewart Concert Video (1DVD). Here is a VHS to DVD transfer of a show from his 1984 tour. This is a real mixed bag of live Rod for it's time. Among the highlights are the opening "Infatuation", "Tonight's The Night", "Passion", and "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy". He does some schmaltz such as "You're In My Heart" and "Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay" which nearly brings things to a grinding halt. Also included are some classics like "Maggie May", "Hot Legs", "Young Turks" and more.

- Rock In Rio (1DVD). Rio, Brazil 2006. Great show from Sting on his last tour. Songs include "Synchronicity", "Walking On The Moon", "Spirits In The Material World", "Shape Of My Heart", "Driven To Tears", "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", "Why Should I Cry For You" and more. Sting does so many Police songs, it's no wonder he got the band back together for a 2007 reunion tour. Quality is great from this satellite broadcast. Video Preview

Keep in mind, this was the "Soul Cages" tour which promoted a pretty depressing album, mainly inspired by the passing of his parents. The band here is super tight with Vinny Colaiuta on drums and Dominic Miller on Guitar. This show is taken from an out of print Japanese laserdisc, so quality is perfect. Songs include the grooving "All This Time" and jazzy "Jeremiah Blues, Pt. 2", plus a great version of "King Of Pain" and even a cover of "Purple Haze". - Rockpalast 2001 (1DVD). Weeze, Flughafen Niederrhein. 8/18/01. Here's the band on their final tour in support of their "Shangri-La Dee Da" album at the Bizarre Festival. Arguably, it's their weakest album and those songs don't add much here ("Coma", "Hollywood Bitch"). However, the band does put on a pretty good show and the quality here is excellent all around. Scott's singing isn't quite as sharp as I've heard and the setlist not quite as strong as the House of Blues show, so I'd only recommend this to the more serious fan. Songs include "Crackerman", "Vasoline", "Meatplow", Big Empty", an excellent pounding version of "Piece Of Pie", "Down", "Interstate Love Song" and more.
Quality Rating: A+- Storytellers (1DVD). Great performance from the band in a storytelling setting. Some songs are done electric ("Tripping On A Hole") while some are given more acoustical treatments ("Interstate Love Song"). Quality Rating: A- House Of Blues 2000 (1DVD). Los Angeles, CA. 3/15/00. This was STP's first official show since singer Scott Weiland was released from prison and drug rehab center. Billed as a "surprise show", the venue wasn't even announced until the day of the show and tickets were only available through a radio promotion. Even though their latest album at this time ("No. 4") was released the previous year (Oct. 1999) they never had a chance to do any live promotion because of Scott's drug issues. Five or so months later the band took the stage in West Hollywood and put on a phenomenal show. They rocked out on songs like "Sex Type Thing", "Crackerman" and "Vasoline", went acoustic on "Interstate Love Song", "Sour Girl" and even introduced some strings on a beautiful version of "Atlanta". At the end of the show guitarist Robbie Krieger (The Doors) joined the band for a rousing version of "Roadhouse Blues". This show is sourced from a DirectTV broadcast and quality is excellent. - Tokyo 1982 (1DVD). Budokan Hall, Tokyo, Japan 1/13/82. Here's a show from their "Paradise Theatre" tour, arguably their peak. This appears to be a broadcast and there's some minor "ghosting" in the picture but, overall, it doesn't take away from enjoying the show. This is not the complete show and doesn't include all the songs on the "Live Illusion" CD. Songs here include "Blue Collar Man", "Rockin' The Paradise", "The Best Of Times", a great acoustical version of "Boat On The River", the Japanese exclusive "Sakura/Sukiyaki", "Half Penny Two Penny" and more. As always, Dennis is in fine vocal form and the band plays well, although I'm still trying to figure out what James Young ever brought to the band (except bad hair). Video Preview

Supertramp
- Live In Toronto (1DVD). 8/24/83, CNE Stadium, Toronto. Here is a Canadian broadcast which showcased two bands, The Payolas and Supertramp. The Payolas are a relatively unknown Canadian band and little time is devoted to them (thankfully). The show mostly focuses on delivering an excellent, 90 minute live performance from Supertramp on their final tour with Roger Hodgson. The band, known as being great in the studio, have quite an immaculate live sound. The band expertly perform songs like "Crazy", "Goodbye Stranger", "Bloody Well Right", "Give A Little Bit", "Logical Song", "School", "Rudy" and more. The video looks a couple of generations down, but the audio is surprisingly full and dynamic. The live show is also mixed with some short band interviews, including Hodgson and Rick Davies. A must for all fans of the classic, Supertramp lineup.

Talk Talk
- Salamanca '86 (1DVD). Salamanca, Spain. 9/10/86. This was an unexpected surprise. Since this is sourced from a 2006 rebroadcast, the quality is amazing. The way it's filmed and the high quality make it a pleasure to watch. As a matter of fact, the show looks many years ahead of it's time - could probably even pass for a recent show. On top of that, the band are simply amazing musicians and songwriters. The audio quality is superb with impressive depth. The drums and percussion sound like they're in the room with you. "Life's What You Make It" could have been a train wreck with it's pulsing tempo, swirling guitars and piano flourishes but the band pull it off beautifully. "It's My Life" is another that sounds amazing, with singer Mark Hollis delivering on every note. Other songs include "Give It Up", "Talk Talk", "Mirror Man/Does Caroline Know" and more. A must for all fans of Talk Talk. Even if you're a casual fan and only like the hits, this will impress. Be sure to check out the Video Preview clip.
Quality Rating: A+- RockPop (1DVD). November,1984. The sound on this is superb, having been "punched up" from the original flat audio source, while the video is okay at best. Talking Heads (also see David Byrne)
- Once In A Lifetime (1PAL DVD). 1982, Wembley Area, London. Consider this a prelude to Stop Making Sense. Channel 4 referred to this as a documentary, and there are bits and pieces of interviews interspersed, but this is far more a stream of consciousness than anything. This is mostly a mixture of various concert and performance footage mixed with an odd assortment of random video taken from TV. Psycho Killer is actually a montage where the video and audio taken from 10 different performances spanning their career are edited to make a whole song. Songs are played in their entirety, but not always with corresponding performance video, and in some cases the performances stop to allow some odd video clip to unfold, then they pick up again. As David Byrne sums it up by saying he wanted to make the boring appear dramatic instead of vice-versa. The quality here varies a lot because the footage used varied a lot. 106 minutes. Video Preview

Tears For Fears
- Paris '05 (1DVD). 6/18/05, Paris, France. Here's an excellent broadcast from their "reunion" tour. While Roland has been active under the Tears For Fears name, he has been without Curt Smith since "Sowing The Seeds Of Love". It didn't turn out so bad as TFF came out with some excellent albums including Elemental and Raol, which sported a more experimental, edgy and alternative sound. Now with Curt back in the mix, everything sounds a bit more mellow and that last album with him should have come with a pillow. This performance does have it's merits but it's not as great as California '90. Songs include "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" and more. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A- Tears Roll Down (Greatest Hits '82-'92) (1DVD). Here's a copy of an out of print DVD which features 12 videos, basically all of them from their debut album ("The Hurting") through "Sowing The Seeds Of Love". Although I wish it covered more recent ground, this does make for a nice collection, if for no other reason than the tracks are remastered into Dolby 5.1. Videos include "Shout", "Mother's Talk" (Album Version), "Woman In Chains", "Everybody Wants To Rule The World", "Laid So Low (Tears Roll Down)", "Mad World". "Pale Shelter", "Head Over Heels" and more.
Quality Rating: A+- Going To California (1DVD). 5/26/90. Santa Barbara, CA. Here's an excellent laserdisc transfer of this out of print title from the "Sowing The Seeds" tour. Simply put, if you're a fan of the band, you'll definitely want this. The sound is amazing as is the performance by this very tight lineup. Oleta Adams guests on keyboards throughout the show and, of course, shares vocals with Roland on the mesmerizingly powerful "Woman In Chains" and "Badman's Song". Also included are "Change", "Pale Shelter", "Mad World", "Head Over Heels" (with the rockin' instrumental outro as on the album) and more. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- Mind's Eye (1DVD). Sourced from laserdisc, this show was recorded sometime after the release of the first album but prior to the recording of their second release. The sound is great, but there are a few glitches here and there. The show itself is mixed with a lot of new age-like computer graphics and photographic effects that give it the feel of a moving Windam Hill album cover. Because of the dated appearance and the fact that there were later shows with a greater selection of hits already released on DVD, this one will probably sit in the vault forever. Songs include "The Working Hour", "Mothers Talk", "Pale Shelter", "Change", "The Prisoner", "The Hurting", "Broken/Head Over Heels/Broken" and more Video Preview

- Into The Gap Live (1DVD). Delmar Raceway, CA. Here's one of those bands from the 80's which are easy to poke fun at because of their bizarre, campy image. However, if you can look underneath all that, this band had some unique, creative pop songs. This is a transfer from Japanese laserdisc so quality is high all around. Pete Townshend (also see The Who)
- Rockpslast '86 (1DVD). 1/29/86, Midem Cannes. Pete didn't perform with this lineup too much because it was either too expensive or he didn't like touring...or maybe both. This is not the same show as the one commonly seen from England and used for the "Deep End Live" show. This is an exclusive European only show featuring much more material than the DEL. Here you get "Slit Skirts", "I'm One", "Face The Face", "Hiding Out" and more. David Gilmore is on guitar. Video quality is very good while the sound is a bit flat, but definitely listenable. There is also a very short interview with Pete following the show.

Traffic (also see Steve Winwood)
- Woodstock '94 (1DVD). 8/14/94, New York. In 1994 Traffic reformed after having been apart for 20 years. They released a decent new album "Far From Home" and embarked on a tour that took them to Woodstock that summer. It's great how everything lined up this way because their renewed enthusiasm shows and, in my opinion, they gave one of the best performances of the entire 3-day festival. Steve Winwood, who had become more of a soulful synth-pop crooner ever since going solo, doesn't show much of that here. Winwood straps on a guitar throughout most of this 75 minute performance and shows how he's one excellent guitar player you rarely (if ever) hear anything about. The band plays all the essentials including an amazing "Low Spark", "Freedom Rider", "Glad", "Empty Pages", "Medicated Goo", and even Spencer Davis' "Gimmie Some Loving". Jim Capaldi sings on "Light Up Or Leave Me Alone" and "Rock And Roll Stew" as well. The musicianship is tight and grooving...everything you'd expect from this band in a live situation. If you're a Traffic fan, you'll really love this one.

- TV Collection (1DVD). This disc includes two different shows. First up is "The Tubes Live MTV Saturday Night Concert" (1983). This is a complete, wacky show from their "Outside Looking Inside" tour. Picture quality is pretty decent for it's age while the sound comes off a bit flat, which is a shame. Still, diehards will treasure it. Songs include "She's A Beauty", "Hey Sports Fans", "Monkey Time", "Tip Of My Tongue", "White Punks On Dope", "Talk To Ya Later" and many more. The other show included here is from a 2001 TNN program called "Classic Rock". The band perform 3 songs and there's band interviews as well. This was a good period for Tina as she mounted what would become a successful comeback that continues to reap rewards even today. Songs include "Private Dance", "Show Some Respect", "I Can't Stand The Rain" and more. The quality here is okay, nothing special. I am seeking a low gen source for this show. The audio is even pretty good, but at times, the crowd noise is too much (especially at the beginning). The band puts on a great show. They perform a good number of tracks from their "Atomic Bomb" album, which went in stores the following day. Even with the new album unreleased at this point, the crowd is familiar with the tunes (maybe they downloaded them??) and Bono even tells The Edge "I think I just figured out who got the CD", referring to the stolen demo of the new album which never surfaced. You know, even with this being an audience boot, I'd much rather watch this then the MTV Jammed broadcast below because it's the complete show and you feel like you're in on the surprise. Songs include "Vertigo", "All Because Of You", "Miracle Drug", "City Of Blinding Lights", "Original Of The Species", "Out Of Control" and a rare version of "She's A Mystery To Me", which the band never recorded but Bono and The Edge wrote for Roy Orbison and appeared on his album "Mystery Girl".
Quality Rating: Video A+ ; Audio B+- MTV Jammed (1DVD). Brooklyn, NY. 11/22/04. U2 put on a surprise show in New York under the Brooklyn Bridge in support of their "Atomic Bomb" album. This disc is taken right from the Direct TV satellite bcast, which is the most complete, proshot available. Not all songs are here ("Miracle Drug"), but most, including "City Of Blinding Lights", "Out Of Control", "Mystery Girl" and more. Picture and sound are top notch! Artwork, Sample Video.
Quality Rating: A+- Vegas 2001 (2DVD). 11/18/01. Thomas And Mack Center, UNLV. Las Vegas, NV. Here is a very nice audience show from the "Elevation" tour. What makes it nice is the 3cam mix and 5.1 sound. Actually, there's an option for both 2 channel stereo and 5.1 (the 2 channel mix is better, in my opinion, as it sounds more upfront and has more punch). One cam is dead center, another is on the floor a few rows from the stage (inside the "heart") and another is on the right side, making it nice to get a few different perspectives. The band puts on a great show and Bono even brings a lady fan onstage to play guitar on the acoustical "People Get Ready". Gwen Stefani of No Doubt guests late in the show on the Marvin Gaye cover "What's Going On". As a bonus, there is a short VH1 story behind the fan who got to perform with U2. Songs include "I Will Follow", "Elevation", "New Year's Day", "Please", "Pride", "One", "Bullet The Blue Sky", "New York", "Kite" and more. Highly recommended for fans.
Quality Rating: A+- South Bend Indiana (1DVD). 10/10/01. Unless you are in love with Bono you probably wouldn't care for this too much. This video feed, while of high quality, is taken from the "Bono Cam" which means, you guessed it...the camera is always on Bono, even when he's not singing. Did I say always? Songs include "Beautiful Day", "Elevation", "What's Going On", "New Year's Day", "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Pride", "One" and more. Artwork
Quality Rating: A+- Irving Plaza 2000 (1DVD) 12/5/00. Here is a proshot video of U2 performing a rare club show in New York City's Irving Plaza. This club doesn't hold much more than 1000 people so talk about intimate! The audio is great, taken from the board. This is a multi-cam video mix as well. The band gives one of it's best performances ever. Songs like "Beautiful Day", "Elevation", "New York", "I Will Follow" are performed with much power and conviction. Bono's in good voice, which is rare these days. If you're a U2 fan, this is a must. See my review of the audio CDs for song details. Video Preview

This is the complete broadcast version of the Popmart show that made it on VHS (and is now out of print). I'm not exactly sure what is different between the broadcast version and the official release, with the exception of maybe the "Lemon (Remix)" which may not have made it to the latter. If anyone knows for sure, let me know. The quality here is great and rivals the official release. Their performance is top notch and the production is excessive, but then again, that was the whole point. Songs include "I Will Follow", "Hold Me, Thrill Me", "New Year's Day", "Discothèque", "Pride" and more. Video Preview

Bono checks in with some people via video throughout the show, Benny and Bjorn from Abba show up to play on "Dancing Queen" and, in between, lots of music. The video quality is pretty decent but the sound could be better, probably not something you'll want to crank as the overall sound is flat. There is a bonus on disc 2 which has footage from another show on this tour, also proshot with much better picture and sound. Artwork

During the 3rd leg of Joshua Tree tour in 1987, U2 developed alter egos as a country and western band known as The Dalton Brothers or sometimes simply The Daltons. They even had the honor of opening for U2 at a couple of shows in the US on November 1st at the Hoosier Dome, Indianapolis and on November 18th at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. This disc contains their short set and The Pretenders, who were opening that night for U2. For the complete U2 set, see "Joshua Tree in LA" below. Video Preview

Audio is a bit flat but very clear. Bono has his arm in a sling but his voice is in fine form and so is the band on this night. Great show from a band that wouldn't look or sound quite the same on the 90's tours. Songs include "I Will Follow", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", "The Unforgettable Fire", "In God's Country", "Bullet The Blue Sky", "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Bad", "October" and more. There are some bonuses added to this DVD which looks like black and white outtakes of live footage from the Rattle And Hum era. Artwork | Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- Rockpalast (1DVD). 8/20/83, Germany. What surprised me was the superb quality of this recording. The picture and sound are crystal clear making this the best document of the "War" era that I've ever seen. Quality Rating: A+- Red Rocks (1DVD) 6/3/83. Denver, CO. This show took place just a few days after their US Festival performance. They play well here, and if you're into their War-era you'll probably like it. This is transferred from an out of print VHS which, quite frankly, could look and sound a whole lot better. If anyone has a better transfer of this show, let me know as I'd be willing to upgrade.
Quality Rating: B+- Louder Than Bombs (1DVD). 5/30/83, Devore, CA. and 6/5/83, Denver, CO. This DVD features their full US Festival set and 6 proshot songs that did not make the official release of their "Under A Blood Red Sky" video. These songs include "Out Of Control", "Twilight", "An Cat Dubh", "Into The Heart", "Two Hearts Beat As One", "The Cry/Electric Co.". The quality on the Red Rocks is very good. As for the US Festival, U2 had just released their third album, "War", and was slowly being recognized as a band to reckon with. Their legendary Red Rocks show was only days away when they performed here. You could definitely tell this was no ordinary band. As a matter of fact, Bill Graham introduces them as being from England but Bono later makes it clear they're from Ireland and not to be confused with the many fashion bands coming out of England. He also says he hopes U2 will be around for a long time to come. He was certainly right as 20 years down the line U2 are among the best, most successful bands in the world. The setlist here pulls from all three of their albums, with the War material really shining here, particularly "New Years Day", "Two Hearts Beat As One", and "Sunday, Blood Sunday". Bono shows he was the frontman of tomorrow as he interacted with the crowd, even going down to hug a few fans in the front rows. During "Electric Co." Bono climbs to the top of the rafters, above the stage and sings to the crowd. If you're a fan of early U2, this is a must. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A-- Out Of Control In San Francisco (1DVD). 5/15/81. San Fran, CA. If you're a fan of pre-War era U2 you must have this. The majority of this DVD is dedicated to the show at California Hall. You'll notice a time code across the bottom of the screen along with the words "BGP Archives", which means this show is from the estate of late, legendary concert promoter Bill Graham. I'm starting to see some interesting things from his collection emerge, such as the Who shows from Charlton and San Francisco. The footage here is superb all around, a real treat. Just to give you an idea of how young the band are here, both Larry Mullen and The Edge are only 19. Songs include "Out Of Control", "Gloria", "I Will Follow", "11 O Clock Tick Tock" and more. An interesting feature here (not often found in bootlegs) is the option of watching the show from another angle. If that's not enough you also get about 40 minutes of video outtakes from the "Out Of Control" video set. While the video quality is excellent, the only sound you hear is the song played over and over, and at times listening to a tape quickly rewinding back in place. Any banter between the band is seen but not heard. Artwork

- Various Artists (2DVD). This long out of print movie features performances from 38 bands in the punk/ska/new wave scene of the early 80's. Some groups are more recognizable than others, but it's a who's who of 80's alternative including The Police, Devo, Wall Of Voodoo, Oingo Boingo, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Dead Kennedys, Gary Newman, The Cramps, Peter Ubu, Skafish, Gang Of Four and many more. There's even a very early look at the Go-Gos (with chunky Belinda) before their first album was released. Then there's a rare, last live performance from XTC (Andy Partridge refused to perform live again due to stage fright). Even the bands you're not familiar with may surprise you as this is one very interesting collection of live clips from various venues. Miles and Ian Copeland (brothers of Police drummer Stewart Copeland) served as creative consultants on this film. The quality here is about as good as you'll find. It's a superb SVHS dub of the master. Video Preview

US Festival (1983)
- Live At The US Festival (3DVD) Glen Helen Regional Park, CA, Memorial Day Weekend, May 1983. Showtime broadcast. Here is a DVD set of highlights from 23 bands who appeared at the 1983 US Festival. Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computers decided to put together a high tech rock concert. No charity here, these bands were paid to play. That didn't stop the crowds as this still holds the Guinness World record for largest ever rock festival attendance (670,000). Van Halen was also paid more than any other band for a single performance - $1 million dollars. This collection showcases the good and bad of this 3 day festival. Disc 1 includes a surprisingly exceptional performance by Wall Of Voodoo ("Mexican Radio") and English Beat ("Save It For Later"). Oingo Boingo, Stray Cats, Men At Work and The Clash also turn in great performances. INXS are here but Michael Hutchence is having a bad vocal day and Christina Amphlett of The Divinyls doesn't look like she's ever had a good day. Disc 2 features performances from day two of the festival which was devoted to metal including Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Triumph and Scorpions. Ozzy is here with new guitarist Jake E. Lee who replaced the late Randy Rhodes who died tragically a little over a year before this show. You also get a few songs from the Van Halen set which is arguably the only redeeming quality of the second DVD. Disc 3 covers the final day with performances by Quarterflash, Berlin and a young U2. Also included is an energetic set from Missing Persons ("Words", "Walking In L.A.") and Pretenders ("My City Was Gone", "Message Of Love"). Joe Walsh rocks out on "Life In The Fast Lane" and Stevie Nicks closes the show with a rousing performance that includes "Stand Back" and a great "Stop Dragging My Heart Around". All in all, this set is a phenomenal trip back to this rare and largely overlooked festival from 1983. Video quality is excellent and sound very good. Lower gen than the Van Halen 20th Anniversary DVDs. Video Preview 1 | Video Preview 2 | Video Preview 3

- Grand Rapids '04 (2DVD). 7/9/04. Grand Rapids, MI. Here's a 1 cam audience shot from the reunion tour with Hagar. The good news is the video quality and camera angle/zooms are superb. The bad news is the sound, which is flatter than a balloon full of holes. Not only is the sound flat, it's annoying. If this can somehow be synched to a high quality audience source it would be a fine release. For diehards only.

Quality Rating: Video A+ ; Audio A-- Jersey '04 (1DVD). 6/23/04. East Rutherford, NJ. If the audio on this was at least pretty good, you'd have a very hot show here. While the video is sourced from an in-house feed with amazing multi-cam shots of the band, the audio is about as flat as a tire full of nails. The band is playing well. although I'm sure fans are divided on the setlist which leans heavy on latter day Hagar tunes like "Humans Being", "Runaround", "Seventh Seal", "Right Now", not to mention a couple of brand new tunes. They do pull out "Somebody Get Me A Doctor" and "Unchained" from the Roth era. Sammy Hagar, who is 57 years old at the time of this review, still looks much younger than his age. With all he's been through (cancer, hip surgery, divorce) Eddie Van Halen is pushing 50 and in fine form here.

Quality Rating: A/A+- Eruption! The Van Halen Media Collection 1977-1985 (1DVD). Here is a collection of videos, promos, TV appearances/clips and interviews from the Roth era of VH. The disc starts off with some great early promotional clips of the band performing "You Really Got Me" and "Dance The Night Away" live. There's also the standard videos for "Oh Pretty Woman", "Jump", "Panama", "Hot For Teacher" and others. You'll see David Lee Roth's entertaining appearance on David Letterman and an informative interview with Jim Ladd. There's also footage of Eddie with wife Valerie Bertanelli on Entertainment Tonight from 1982, when the show was barely a year old. Overall, a great package from the early days. After viewing this disc, I must give more respect to David Lee Roth than I previously had. Listening to him in some of these interviews reveals his deep thinking side, and alot of it makes sense. His inflated ego often overshadowed this quality about him. Highly recommended for fans of the Roth era. Video Preview
Quality Rating: Video B/A ; Audio B+/A- US Festival: 20th Anniversary Edition (2DVD). Glen Helena Regional Park, San Bernardino, CA 5/29/83. If you're a Van Halen fan you'll want this. Not because it's a great performance but more for the ambience of the time and spectacle of David Lee Roth. It's pretty clear to see how the band imploded under his enormous ego which was in high gear this night. Things seem to take a turn after Roth gulps Jack Daniels right out of the bottle and then goes into "Jamie's Crying" with little regard for vocal delivery. He'll either miss entire verses or sing one or two words while making calls to the audience. The band, at times, seems to really have it together, especially Eddie who plays very well here. The quality of the audio and video are pretty good at best.. The Roth era of VH is pretty interesting not only due to the lack of official audio/video releases, but the bootlegs from this era are not anywhere near high quality. Also Included here are backstage antics and interviews completely uncensored which leads me to believe this is a 2nd or 3rd generation copy from a raw master reel. Songs include "Running With The Devil", "Unchained", "The Full Bug", "Secrets", "You Really Got Me", "So This Is Love", "Little Guitars" and more. Video Preview

- Live In Tokyo (1DVD). 1/24/85. Tokyo, Japan. Here is a laserdisc transfer of this rare, out of print Japanese import. This was Stevie's first trip to Japan and audiences loved him. There were plans for an official release from this tour but they were later scrapped for some reason. Vaughan's performance here is nothing short of mind-blowing, as always. He comes out, smoking pipe in mouth, and delivers the best version of "Scuttle Buttin'" I've ever heard. Then he slides into "Say What" and lays down some mean licks...it's jaw dropping how he moves so effortlessly and never wastes one note. A true guitar genius that is sorely missed. Songs include "Cold Shot", "Couldn't Stand The Weather", "Texas Flood" an amazingly superb "Voodoo Chile" and more. One of my favorite boots. Quality Rating: A+- The Rise Of (1DVD) 6/5/05, Germany. This DVD contains a great documentary on the band, which aired on VH1, called "The Rise of Velvet Revolver". It follows the band looking for and auditioning lead singers before finally hooking up with Scot Weiland. Even after they land him, nothing is certain. With Scot, they realize they have something amazing. He's a true frontman with the voice and charisma they've been looking for, but it came with a price. Scot was a heroine addict and his addiction had to be addressed before the band could truly fly. Having been through drug issues themselves, bandmates Slash, Duff and Matt Sorum prove to be a source of encouragement and strength for Scot, who manages to ride the road to recovery with their support. There's also six songs from Rock Am Ring, an annual live event broadcast by German TV. The quality here is top notch. Songs include "Do It For The Kids", "Fall To Pieces", "Set Me Free", "Slither". Another bonus, the video for "Come On, Come In", which was featured in the movie "Fantastic Four". Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- The Spectrum (1DVD) 11/10/04, Philadelphia, PA. Do you want the good or bad news first? Okay, good news - it's a very nice 3 cam mix. The bad news - sound is awful. Even a lower quality DAT source would be nice. A damn shame.

This disc has both a 2.0 and 5.1 mix, but neither are all that great. I prefer the 2.0 mix, actually, although that one doesn't even have enough presence to really get into. There's much more clarity here than the Spectrum show above but the sound is still lacking in depth and punch. Roger Waters
- The Dark Side Of The Moon (1DVD). 3/9/07. Bogotá, Colombia. Here is an excellent, proshot, full show from Waters, including a live performance of the entire "Dark Side Of The Moon" album. That performance is really great here, as are some other Floyd tunes. However, I can't stand his solo material at all. To me, it's a brown load of self-absorbed, overblown crap. After Waters masterminded "The Wall", he never came out with anything else worth listening to, in my opinion. Even his last album with Floyd ("The Final Cut") was just too heavy handed and drowning with Water's post-war fixations. That being said, get this DVD if only for the "Dark Side" performance, which is very nice.
Quality Rating: A+- Rock In Rio (1DVD). 6/2/06. Here's a perfect satellite broadcast from Water's performance in Rio. I've never really cared for solo Waters but he does a respectable job here. Waters fans will love it. Only the first set is included here. His second set, which consisted of the entire "Dark Side Of The Moon" album, was not broadcast at his request. Perhaps a DVD (aka another paycheck) is intended for future release? Whitesnake
- Super Rock '84 (1DVD). Seibu Stadium, Japan, August 11/12, 1984. I picked up this show as a gift for a friend. In retrospect, I should have just given him my only copy. I'll be honest, I don't have much love for Whitesnake. This show takes place right before singer David Coverdale "shined the turd" and fired the entire band. He then went on to hire younger faces which would eventually be responsible for their commercial breakthrough in 1987. Here you'll see performances mixed with interviews of various band members, including Cozy Powell on drums. To be fair, I asked my friend to give his thoughts and he, being a fan, enjoyed it. The picture and sound quality are excellent. He didn't appreciate how the interviews would consistently overlap with performances/solos. My favorite part would have been the final seconds during the fade, after the credits. Songs include "Gambler", "Guilty Of Love", "Slow And Easy" and more. Video Preview

The Who (also see Pete Townshend)
- The Rock Odyssey 2004 (1DVD). Yokohama, Japan, 7/24/04. This incarnation of the band should be called "Who's Missing" or better yet, "Who's That" because Entwhistle's shoes are being filled by someone else here. I love The Who but I also think they've gone on long enough under that banner with both Moon and Entwhistle now gone. The band plays well here and the widescreen, high definition Japanese broadcast makes this a pleasure to watch...but it ain't the real "Who". Songs include "Substitute", "I Can't Explain", "Baba O'Reilly", "My Generation", "Won't Get Fooled Again" and more. Artwork | Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- Detroit 2000 (1DVD) The Palace At Auburn Hills, Detroit, 5/27/00. This is the second show of their 2000 tour. The sourcing here is from a Super VHS master recording of the show. Both video and soundboard audio are superb. Pete's guitar comes through loud and clear so if you're a guitarist hoping to catch some licks you'll love it for that. The band is in a good mood this night and the video feed does a good job of capturing some "lighter" moments on stage such as when Roger forgets the words in "Seeker" and shoots a big smile over to Pete. The performance is top notch, a real treat. Songs here include "Baba O'Riley", the great rare "I Don't Even Know Myself", "The Real Me", "Behind Blue Eyes", "You Better You Bet" and more. An absolute must for any Who fan. Artwork
Quality Rating: A+- Thirty Years of Maximum R&B Live (1DVD). This now out of print DVD was the companion video to their 4CD boxset of the same name. This serves as a visual document of live Who from their very early days (1967) to their late 80's reunion. Mixed in with all this great footage are interesting interview clips with Roger, Pete and John. This collection is really a "best of the boots" as it compiles clips from some shows below. The good news is the quality on these shows is much better than any of the boots being traded. For example, the 3 clips from "Tanglewood Music Shed" 1970 are very clean and higher quality than the show I'm used to seeing. There's some interesting rehearsal footage of the band with then new drummer Kenny Jones (Shepperton Studios, 1979). Overall an excellent showcase of live Who and a must for all Who fans.

While the performance here isn't bad, it doesn't come close to the Who that pulverized it's audiences when Keith Moon was behind the drumkit just a few years earlier. Kenny Jones, as hard as he tries, just never sounded right. Songs include "Substitute", Baba O'Riley", "Another Tricky Day", "You Better You Bet", "Drowned", "Pinball Wizard", "5:15" and more. Quality Rating: A- The Summit '75 (1DL DVD). 11/20/75. The Summit, Houston, TX. 4Reel Productions. So far, this gets my vote for the best Who bootleg video. Here's a proshot from the band in their prime with Keith Moon. Check out the great "Behind Blue Eyes" and then the rocking "Tommy" set...classic Who! An absolute for all Who fans. This is a dual layer DVD and includes many bonus clips from various sources and even an interview with Keith Moon. Artwork 1, 2 | Video Preview
Quality Rating: A- Cleveland '75 (1DVD). 12/9/75, Cleveland, OH. Here's a proshot for the diehards. The colors are oversaturated and overall bright and the sound is loud and flat. Songs include "I'm Free", "Substitute", "Join Together", "Magic Bus", "Spoonful". Video Preview
Quality Rating: C+- Charlton '74 (1DVD) 5/17/74. Charlton Athletic Field. Billed as "The Who and Friends", Bad Company and Lou Reed (among others) were the supporting act this nite (none of which was captured here). The Who took the stage at 8:45pm and played over 90mins to a crowd of 50,000. Pete later admitted to being "pissed" throughout the show, and yes that meant "drunk". It's not the best the Who could have offered up but there are some good moments including "Let's See Action", "Naked Eye" and the first ever performance of their slower, bluesy version of "My Generation". Overall the broadcast sound and video quality are just about excellent. Video Preview
Quality Rating: A-- San Francisco '73 (1DVD) 11/20/73, San Fran, CA. Here's a classic black and white show from the archives of the late, great Bill Graham. The band is really rocking this night, it's just a shame the quality isn't better. The audio and video are many gens down the line. Of note here, Keith Moon passes out late in the show. Roger and Pete take glances back to Keith's drumkit and they finally realize he's passed out. Eventually Keith returns and wrestles with Pete onstage and then the band continues. I would say this is probably only recommended for hardcore fans. Video Preview
Quality Rating: Video: B+ ; Audio: C+- Pontiac '75 (1DVD) 12/6/75. Pontiac, MI. With an attendance of 78,600 fans, this show was the largest indoor concert ever, until it was broken four years later (probably by a corporate rock band). This show is another classic Who performance, which is a blast to watch. Between this show and "Tanglewood" you really get the essence of what the Who were all about. Songs include "Won't Get Fooled Again", an incredible "Summertime Blues", an even more phenomenal "We're Not Gonna Take It", "Join Together" and more. Color. Video Preview
Quality Rating: Video: A- ; Audio: B- Tanglewood '70 (1DVD). 7/7/70, Lenox, MA. Color version. When it comes to classic Who, this is it. Here you get to witness the Pete Townshend jumps and windmills, Roger's microphone swinging and Keith Moon's unbelievable manic drumming all in full swing. Then there's the music, which is unbridled, raw power they would never again recapture after the passing of Moon. This show marked the end of the Who's 1970 summer U.S. tour. The band had been riding high off of such legendary performances such as "Live At Leeds" and "Woodstock". Tommy was becoming a big part of their live show but Pete announces in this show that it's the last time the band would perform Tommy in it's entirety. The video here is culled from two sources, one being Bill Graham's archives and the other is unknown. During the early parts of Tommy the video source changes, unfortunately not for the better. The audio improves, though, and the video quality is still watchable. Songs include "Young Man Blues", "I Don't Even Know Myself", "My Generation", "Heaven And Hell" and more. Video Preview
Quality Rating: Video: A-/B- ; Audio: B+- Isle Of Wight (1DL DVD + 1CD). 8/31/69. 4Reel Productions. Here is their set from the Isle of Wight Festival in '69. The footage is black and white with some video artifacts, however, it's still very watchable. The bonus features here are great including their Woodstock '69 set from a few days earlier. This is the best available version sporting very clean black/white footage (timecoded) and fuller sound than my previous version. Additionally, there's "Pictures Of Lilly" from French TV, "Pinball Wizard" from the Tom Jones show and more. Overall, a great early nugget for fans of the band. Video Preview
Quality Rating: B/A- Woodstock '69 (1DVD). 8/17/69. Woodstock, NY. The Who finally took the stage at 3am and were the final band of day 2 of the legendary Woodstock festival. Roger Daltrey recently said their performance was "unpleasant" due to the sound guys who had "lost control" by the time they went on. Not too long before this The Who were opening for Herman's Hermits! It was their performance at Woodstock that really propelled their careers to the next level and allowed them to take charge. The forthcoming early 70's would cement them as one of the best rock bands of all time. The Who were paid $12,500 to perform at this gig, which may have been the most of any band. The black and white picture quality is great but the sound is a bit flat. You can hear what's going on, but you won't want to crank it up too much. A timecode is present at the bottom of the screen. Songs include "I Can't Explain", "I'm Free", "Summertime Blues", "Shakin' All Over", "My Generation" and more.

Steve Winwood (also see Traffic)
- Austin City Limits (1DVD). 10/11/03, Austin, TX. Here's an excellent performance from the PBS show "Austin City Limits" in support of his great "About Time" album. This is sourced from a Flint, Michigan broadcast. Winwood shines all around, including on guitar where he is much underrated. Songs here include "I'm A Man", "Dear Mr. Fantasy" and more.
Quality Rating: Video A : Audio A+- Rockpalast '97 (1DVD). 6/22/97. Here is Winwood from the Open Air Festival in Germany with a great backing band. They do songs from his solo career, Traffic, Blind Faith, Spencer Davis and more. Sound and picture are excellent. Winwood's band here are more jam oriented so the songs have more of a "Santana" vibe. Songs include "I'm A Man", "Glad", "Low Spark", "Higher Love", "Freedom Overspill", "Family Affair", "Roll With It" and more.
Quality Rating: A- Yokohama '91 (1DVD). Yokohama, Japan. 3/22/91. Here's Winwood on his "Refugees Of The Heart" tour. This appears to be a broadcast and quality is pretty good. If anyone has a clean version, definitely let me know. Winwood and the band put on a great show with a nice setlist including "While You See A Chance", "Valerie", "Low Spark", "Split Decision", "Finer Things", "Higher Love", "Back In The Highlife", "Medicated Goo" and more.
Quality Rating: A-- Royal Albert Hall '88 (1DVD). London, England. 9/30/88. Here's a broadcast from his "Roll With It" tour. Such a shame the quality isn't much better here. The video isn't too bad, but the audio sounds a bit compressed and not great for cranking, which this needs. Killer show, though. If anyone has a cleaner or pristine version, let me know. The setlist is great including "Freedom Overspill", "While You See A Chance", "Don't You Know What The Night Can Do", "Low Spark", "Finer Things", "Valerie", "Higher Love" and more. Video Preview

Stevie Wonder
- A Night Of Wonder (1DVD). BBC, London 1995. I've been looking for a good quality Stevie show with a setlist that included a nice balance of his better 70s and 80s hits. The Detroit show from '84 is okay but this is more what I had in mind. Wonder sports a great band, rounded out by percussion, horns and background singers. Songs include "Master Blaster", "Higher Ground", "Sir Duke/I Wish", "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", "Superstition", "Do I Do" and more. The setlist could be better, but overall, this is a great performance. The quality is top notch from what appears to be a recent rebroadcast. Fans of Stevie, you can wonder no more about this show. Yes (also see ABWH and Asia)
- Allentown '04 (1DVD). 9/3/04. Here is the band in the final month of their 2004 tour. The taper here does a very nice job of capturing the performance with waist-high close-ups, particularly during solo spots. The audio is a bit thin, but you can make out most everything. Of all the single cam audience shows I've seen from this tour, this one is probably best, thanks to the camera work. This is a shorter show than we're used to on this tour (solo spots have been removed). Songs include "Sweet Dreams", "South Side Of The Sky", "Awaken", "And You And I", "Going For The One" and more.
Quality Rating: Video A+ ; Audio B+- NY State Fair '04 (1DVD). 9/2/04, Syracuse, NY. Here is an audience cam of a show from their 35th Anniversary Tour. The filmer does an excellent job of staying focused on key performances with the zoom and overall, gets the band in most every shot. The downside to this one is the sound, which is very thin and flat. This isn't a show you'll want to crank...good at a low volume while you're doing something else. If a great audio source for this show ever emerges someone could edit together one great show from this video. Their performance this night is superb and really "on". Songs include "Going For The One", "Sweet Dreams", "South Side Of The Sky", "Awaken", "Starship Trooper", "America" and more. My copy, unfortunately, has some glitches which appear to have been introduced in the burn process. Seeking replacement.
Quality Rating: Video: A+ ; Audio: B-- Jones Beach '04 (2DVD). Jones Beach, NY. 8/28/04. There's a few versions of this show trading around, but this one is the best. The 3 cam video has been synced to a nice quality DAT source. If you're familiar with the Rush @ Radio City from 8/18/04, that should give you a feel for what this one is like. Aside from the Lugano show, which was professionally filmed, this is probably the best amateur shot show from the tour. The setlist is a little different from other shows on this tour and includes the rarely played "Close To The Edge", "Awaken", "Starship Trooper", "And You And I" and more. Highly recommended.
Quality Rating: A- Lugano Estival Jazz (1DVD) Lugano, Switzerland 7/8/04. Here is a broadcast from the band's 2004 European tour. This is a high definition broadcast so quality is high for both video and sound. This is also the full show and, if you didn't know any better, could pass for an official release (or very close). Songs here include "Going For The One", "Sweet Dreams", "Mind Drive", "South Side Of The Sky", "Starship Trooper", "And You And I" and more. A must for all Yes fans. NTSC and PAL versions available.
Quality Rating: A+- Mohegan Sun '04 (2DVD) Uncasville, CT, 5/12/04. Here's a nice audience shot from the 35th Anniversary Tour. The taper does a good job of staying on band members with some nice closeups. The audio here isn't great but certainly listenable. Songs include "Sweet Dreams", "The Meeting", "Turn Of The Century", and an acoustic "Owner Of A Lonely Heart", which actually sounds better suited for this lineup.
Quality Rating: Video A+ ; Audio A-- Madison Square Garden '04 (2DVD) New York, NY, 5/13/04. Here is a 2 cam audience shot the night after the Mohegan Sun show above. Quality Rating: Video A+ ; Audio B+- Montreux Jazz Festival 2003 (1DVD) 7/14/03. Montreux, Switzerland. This is a broadcast of the 55min Yes set at this festival. The picture quality is excellent and in widescreen. The audio is a bit hot, so there is some distortion and is not something you'll want to crank too loudly. Songs include "Awaken", "Long Distance Runaround", "Roundabout" plus solo spots from Steve and Rick. Artwork
Quality Rating: Video A+ ; Audio B+- San Diego '02 (2DVD). 12/2/02. Here is a one cam audience shot from the end of their 2002 tour w/Wakeman. The taper is in the balcony and does a pretty good job of capturing the show. The sound is kinda distant and there is some distortion on the high end. I would only recommend this if you were there and wanted a momento. Songs include "Close To The Edge", "Don't Kill The Whale", "Magnification" and more.
Quality Rating: Video A+ ; Audio B- Camden 2002 (2DVD). 8/8/02, Camden, NJ. This is taken from the in-house audio/video feed so quality is pretty high. Sometimes there will be some distortion when Jon and the band are in full force but most of the time the sound is very full and nice. I wish there were more camera angles available...seems to be about a 4 cam mix. Songs include "Siberian Khatru", "America", "The Revealing Science of God", "Don't Kill the Whale", "Whitefish (Fish, Tempus Fugit, Silent Wings, Soundchaser)", "We Have Heaven/South Side of the Sky" and more. Quality Rating: Video A ; Audio B+/A-- Konocti Harbor Resort (1DVD). Konocti, CA. 2002. Here's an interesting outdoor gig, filmed for a local television broadcast. Picture is excellent and sound very good as well, although it could be a bit brighter. This also features interviews with Alan White and Chris Squire. Songs include "Siberan Khatru", "In The Presence Of" and more. This DVD also features Steve Howe's acoustic performance (w/interviews) on MHZ Presents. For those who don't know, MHZ Presents is a television show on a channel which airs in the Washington DC area. As a matter of fact, it's one of the only independent public television stations around. The good news or the bad news first? Howe's acoustic performance is great here...I only wish the sound were better. It seems to be recorded a bit too loud as there is some minor distortion. If anyone has a better sounding version of this show, please let me know.
Quality Rating: Video A/A- ; Audio B+/A-- Holmdel 2000 (1DVD). 7/19/00. Holmdel, New Jersey. The audio from this show has been circulating under the name "Speak To Me In Sweet Unaccustomed Ways", which was taken from the radio broadcast of this show. There was also a webcast and it was used as the video source here. That being said, the picture quality isn't bad at all. Sure, there are times you can tell it's taken from a webcast, but the quality is very clear, synced perfectly and enjoyable to watch. This show is quite amazing as they dug out "Gates" and "Ritual" for the first time since the 70's and nailed them very well. This is the rare period in Yes history just after Billy Sherwood left and before Igor would leave (or be asked to). Overall it's a great performance that I would recommend to any Yes fan. Other songs include "Heart Of The Sunrise", "Starship Trooper", Steve acoustic on "Leaves Of Green" and more. The audio for this show is comprised of the best available. For all songs, except "Ritual", the sound is top notch. For "Ritual" I believe the source is from the webcast because it was not broadcast on radio. However, the quality is very good.
Quality Rating: Video: A/A- ; Audio: A+/A-- Concord 2000 (2DVD). 6/21/00, Concord, CA. This was the 2nd date of US Masterworks tour. Quality Rating: Video B+/A- ; Audio A-- Sofia + Bucharest '00 (1PAL DVD). 3/23/00 & 3/24/00. Sofia, Bulgaria and Bucharest, Romania. This disc has two European broadcasts of two shows on the "Ladder" tour. The Sofia show is about an hour long while the Bucharest show is more complete, coming in around 2 hours. The quality here is not that great and recommended for diehards only. The official release from this tour, "House Of Blues" makes this bootleg pretty worthless.
Quality Rating: B-- Open Your Eyes (1DVD). Sportcsarnok, Budapest. 3/31/1998. Here is a nice broadcast from the "Open Your Eyes". The picture quality is not the best, but the excellent sound makes up for it. If you're a fan of this era w/Billy Sherwood and Igor, grab this one. Songs include "Siberian Khatru", "Rhythm Of Love", "Whitefish", "Revealing Science of God", "And You And I", "Open Your Eyes" and more.
Quality Rating: Video: B+ ; Audio: A+- Open Your Aires (2DVD). 5/16/98, Buenos Aires, Argentina. This is a broadcast from the "Open Your Eyes" tour. Not their best album or tour, but it does have it's moments. The disc opens with "Siberian Khatru" already in progress and there's also "America" and "The Revealing Science Of God". Video quality is okay, if not a bit grainy and the audio is on the flat side. However, it is definitely watchable.
Quality Rating: Video B+ ; A-- Tower Records + Fox After Breakfast (1PAL DVD) 11/20/96. Los Angeles, CA. Here is a performance to promote the "Keys To Ascension" CD at Tower Records in LA. This performance was beamed via satellite to many cities across the country and this is a 2nd or 3rd gen copy of the raw feed. The sound quality is pretty good, while the video is just okay, definitely watchable. The band performs a short set including "America", "Roundabout", "Starship Trooper" and more. Also included here is Yes' appearance on "Fox After Breakfast", a failed morning show for the Fox Network. The Yankees had just won the World Series so NYC was a ball of excitement and Yes was to play outside the Fox Studios in Manhattan. At first you see the band, some with their wives, sitting around a table talking with the host. A couple of funny moments - Rick and Steve didn't bring their wives so Rick introduces Steve as his wife. Then the host says the band has split more than Brando's pants! Then the band goes outside and plays "America" for a pretty ravenous group of Yes fans that have gathered. Also as a bonus on this DVD is some rehearsal footage from the "Know" tour which promoted the "Keys" albums. The quality on this is a bit shaky and really only for diehards. There's also a documentary on getting the classic lineup back again in '96. The video quality here is not too good, but the audio is okay.

Quality Rating: A- Live In Binghamton (2DVD). 6/18/94. Binghamton, NY. I love it when shows like this emerge as they just make great bootlegs. For some, it would make a great souvenir as well. Here you have Yes on their "Talk" tour, the last with Trevor Rabin and Tony Kaye. The video is sourced from an audience camera and the audio is taken from an in-house FM feed. The idea behind the FM feed was a gimmick called "Concertronics". It gave fans the option of wearing a walkman and headphones to the show in order to hear a better mix of the live performance. While that idea fell flat, it certainly helped the bootleggers come up with this gem. The single cam audie features nice shots of all band members and, when combined with the great FM audio, makes for one hell of a show. The only downside is the show features all but one song from "Talk", a Yes album I have given many chances but have never liked. This was the first Rabin-era Yes album to feature a true writing collaboration between Rabin and Anderson, however, it still comes off as a Rabin production. While I do think Rabin is a talented singer, guitarist, songwriter and producer, Yes has never been dominated by one person. The "Talk" album was received poorly by most everyone and even ticket sales for the tour were down drastically from previous tours. Rabin felt it was a good time to explore other options and wound up entering the world of film scores, where he's done exceptionally well. There are bonus features here - the band performing "Walls" on David Letterman and the "Talk" Album Launch w/Bob Coburn (slideshow w/audio only). During the special, Coburn actually says "Talk" may be the best Yes album ever! Bob, whatever you are smoking, let's have it! Video Preview
Quality Rating: A-/A- Union Tour Japan (1DVD). Japan, 1992. This is not the same as the Union Tour VHS from the final date at the Shoreline in CA. This is taken from a Japanese show in the round. A good deal of the show is here minus the solos and "Awaken". The quality appears to be a couple gens down the line but quality is generally very good. Songs include "Life Me Up", "Heart Of The Sunrise", "Yours Is No Disgrace", "Changes" and more.
Quality Rating: A-- Union (1DVD). Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountainview, CA. 8/8/91. This is a copy of the out of print Japanese only release which documented the final date on the North American Union tour (5 Japanese dates would follow in early '92). If you're a Yes fan you'll definitely want to check this out as it's a who's who of Yes members past and present, featuring Bill Bruford, Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman, all of whom hadn't played with the band for at least 10 years. Sometimes their playing together is tight and at times it can sound a bit muddled, but overall they do a very good job with the setlist. Since it's the final date of the tour, the show is a bit looser than other dates. Wakeman pinches Rabin's ass during "I've Seen All Good People", Tony Kaye repeatedly plays what sounds like a child yelling during that same song. During "Saving My Love" there's more yucks. I'm not exactly sure of the source, but it's either from a DVD or Laserdisc as the quality is superb. Songs include "Yours Is No Disgrace", "And You And I" and more. Artwork | Video Preview

Quality Rating: A- Philly '87 (1DVD). 11/30/87. Philadelphia Spectrum, PA. Here is an in-house video feed from the "Big Generator" tour. The performance here is great, I just wish the quality were as good. This is an upgrade from another version I had which was definitely many generations down. This one has sharper picture and fuller sound, but still not quite excellent in terms of overall quality. Still seeking a very low gen version.
Quality Rating: Video B+ ; Audio B+- Detroit '87 (1DVD). 11/21/87, Detroit, MI. Here is a rare audience shot from the "Big Generator" tour. While there are some occasional heads in the way, this boot really isn't all that bad. You wouldn't want this to crank up...I would get it if you're curious about how they looked and performed on this tour. Plus there are some songs performed here that were never played again such as "Final Eyes" and "I'm Running".
Quality Rating: B+- Rock In Rio (1DVD).1/17/85. Rio, Brazil. The picture quality on this brodcast is okay and sound is on the flat side. At times the source tape loses it's tracking, but overall, if you keep this on in the background at a lower volume while working, etc. it's an enjoyable show. The band is playing very well here as they head towards the end of the 90125 tour. Songs include "Yours Is No Disgrace", "Hold On", "Changes" and more. Video Preview
Quality Rating: B+- Dortmund '84 + Forrest Hills '84 (1PAL DVD). 6/24/84. Dortmund, Germany & 8/29/84 Forrest Hills Tennis Center, New York City. The first part is a broadcast from the European leg of the 90125 tour in Germany. The video quality isn't too bad here, but the audio just doesn't have much depth. With 9012Live slated for January 2005 release on DVD, there's not much need to own this unless you're a major fan of this era. The second part of this disc contains interview footage with various band members with MTV's Martha Quinn (who would later introduce them on stage). The interview footage doesn't look like it's from a broadcast, but rather from some rare raw footage. Also included is part of the soundcheck and then a good part of the show itself. The problem here is quality...both picture and sound are not that good, but you can see and hear just enough to tell what's going on. The interviews and soundcheck are probably most interesting here. The show quality leaves little to be desired. Video Preview
Quality Rating: Video A-/C ; Audio C+/B- Leave It In Landover (2DVD), 5/15/84, Landover, MD. Here is a proshot video of Yes on the final date of the 90125 US tour. The audio and video quality are nothing great here, but it's still watchable. I hadn't really seen a Rabin-era show in a while so seeing this immediately began drawing comparisons to more recent lineups. To me, this lineup wasn't as good as I once thought. Kaye's keyboards are of no value and Rabin's guitar playing is mostly over cooked. Also, who dressed the guys on this tour? Chris Squire looks like he's ready for Halloween, minus the mask. However, at the time, this was a joyous occasion as it looked like Yes was completely over just a few years prior. Songs include "Yours Is No Disgrace", "Changes", "City Of Love" and more.
Quality Rating: B+- Live At The Apollo (1DVD), Glasgow, Scotland 11/8/77. A classic performance from the "Going For The One" tour. Quality Rating: Video B- ; Audio B+- Going For The One Sessions (1DVD). Studio, 1976. After taking time off to do solo projects, a rejuvenated Yes returned to form with Rick Wakeman back in the band. Yes were having fun again, especially in the studio, which you can clearly see here. The music was also among their best on this album. Fans of GFTO must see this because it's about 2 hours of unfiltered video from those sessions. The picture and sound are pretty good, considering the age. The disc opens with the band noodling in the studio while Jon Anderson paints. Soon you see them fleshing out parts of "Awaken", particularly the ending, where Jon and Rick go back and forth over E flat notes. Chris passes a joint to Steve where he then lays down some mean slide guitar tracks on "Going For The One". There's even a Spinal Tapish moment as the band discuss the idea of wearing similar outfits on the upcoming tour. You also get the witty antics of a young Rick Wakeman. In one scene he leads Chris, Steve and Alan on kazoo during the intro to GFTO. In another Jon is leading the band as they clap their hands and play percussion for "Awaken". There's other things I won't mention just because you should have something to look forward to - and you will. Video Preview
Quality Rating: Video B ; Audio B+- Sounding Out (1DVD). 10/3/71. Hempstead, England. This is a BBC show which features some very early footage of the band in their Bruford/Wakeman era, probably the oldest I've seen yet. The picture quality is very good, especially since it's from a 2007 rebroadcast. It's quite interesting to see and hear from the band at this point as Wakeman had just joined, Howe had been in the band for about year already and Bruford was about a year or so from leaving. The show consists of individual band interviews mixed with some performances. Of note, there's a sizable amount of "Yours Is No Disgrace" shown here. All the footage is great to see, especially since you never get to see the band live from the Bruford era. I have another version of this show (quality is watchable), which includes bonus features such as Steve and Chris on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1976, which features interviews and promotional videos for Howe's "Beginning's" album and also "Hold Out Your Hand/Right By My Side" from Squire's Fish Out Of Water solo album. The quality here is great. Also included here are the promotional videos for Alan White's Ramshackled album (which has to be one of the oddest things I've ever heard). Video Preview

Neil Young (also see Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young)
- At The Beach (1DVD). 6/14/89, Jones Beach, Long Island, NY. Here is an excellent pro shot acoustic show from Neil Young before his "Freedom" album was released. As a matter of fact, the acoustic version of "Rockin' In The Free World" that opens "Freedom" is taken from this show. Interestingly enough, Neil performs "Free World" twice in this show and the second take was the one used for the album, which was released later that year in October. The sound quality is direct from the board so it's a very enjoyable listen. Young performs "Crime In The City", "Comes A Time", "This Note's For You", "Heart Of Gold", "Powderfinger" and also "Down By The River" with guest Bruce Springsteen. Also included as a bonus, his Saturday Night Live performances from 1989. What's interesting here is you get not only the 3 performances that were broadcast, but you are also treated to his rehearsals for each tune as well...talk about rare! Not to mention, Neil's band really rocks on "Rockin' In The Free World" as well as "No More". Highly Recommended. Artwork
Quality Rating: A+- In Concert (1DVD). BBC, London, 1971. Even though his "Harvest" album wasn't due out until February 1972, here is a very young, solo Neil breaking in some "new" tunes in front of a London crowd. Armed with only an acoustic guitar and piano, Neil does an excellent job on such tunes as "Old Man", "Out On The Weekend", "Heart of Gold", "A Man Needs A Maid" and more. The quality is excellent and is from a Trio rebroadcast. As a bonus there's a few songs from a Mike Bloomfield tribute in which Neil Young participated (3/2/81, The Ritz, New York). The single cam black and white footage is a bit faded, but overall still enjoyable. The sound is off the board and pretty good as well. Video Preview

Frank Zappa
- The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life (2DVD). Spain, 1988. The title speaks for itself here. This lineup only played together for about 4 months but they sounded like an old, well-oiled machine. The title should be "The Best Band You've Never Seen Take A Break" as these guys flow seamlessly from song to song with ease, often changing tempos in mid-air with amazing precision. Zappa himself turns in some fine solos. This must have been sourced from a TV broadcast as it doesn't appear to be from any official release. If you're very curious about Zappa live, you should get this. If you're a diehard, what are you waiting for? Songs include "Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk", "Find Her Finer", the hilarious "Whipping Post" , "I Am The Walrus" and more.
Quality Rating: Video: B+ ; Audio: A-- The Torture Never Stops (1DVD). 10/31/81. Palladium, NYC. Here's an excellent broadcast from his "You Are What You Is" tour, which also features Steve Vai on guitar. Picture quality is very nice and the sound is flat but clear. Songs include "Montana", "Easy Meat", "Harder Than Your Husband", "Bamboozled By Love", "Goblin Girl" and more. Artwork | Video Preview

ZZ Top
- Beacon Theatre (1DVD). 11/11/05, New York City. If you're looking for a recent ZZ Top show and been upset that no proshots are turning up, give this one a try. This is an awesome audience recording from 2005 in NYC. The video is crystal clear and the sound is really good. Songs include "Got Me Under Pressure", "Pincushion", "Waitin for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago", "Heard it on the X", "Stages", "Cheap Sunglasses", "Viva Las Vegas", "Gimme All Your Lovin" and more. Quality Rating: Video A+ ; Audio A- Camden '03 (1DVD). 5/21/03, Camden, NJ. Here are the bearded ones on their "Mescalero" tour. This is sourced from an in-house monitor feed, so quality is high. With the exception of one new song ("Buck Nekkid"), the 88min setlist contains mostly classic stuff such as "Just Got Paid", "Cheap Sunglasses", "Waiting For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago", "Precious And Grace", "Manic Mechanic", "Pincushion", a nice job on "Rough Boy", "Sharp Dressed Man", "La Grange", "Tush" and more. A must for all ZZ Top fans! Artwork | Video Preview
Quality Rating: A+- Dortmund '82 (1DVD). Dortmund, Germany, 5/22/82. Here's a very good broadcast from their El Loco tour. Songs include "Groovy Little Hippie Pad", "Jesus Just Left Chicago", "Ten Foot Pole", "La Grange" and more.
Quality Rating: A- Rockpalast '80 (1DVD). Here is a rare, classic show from their performance on Rockpalast, a European music show which I'm finding has hosted many great bands. There's a treasure trove waiting to be released on DVD but I hear it's tangled up in red tape and that's a shame. This is a 2 or 3 gen VHS transfer and the quality is pretty good at best. You can see the band right before they hit it big with "Eliminator". This show features many songs from their "Deguello" album including "Manic Mechanic", "I Thank You", "Cheap Sunglasses", "She Loves My Automobile", "Tush", "Just Got Paid", "La Grange". Artwork
