30th Anniversary Tour
Title:
Rush Cubed - To The Power
of 3 Date: 6/12//04 Manchester, UK Source: 3 Cam Mix w/AUD sound Quality Rating: A+ Video Preview |
Description: This was a pleasant surprise. Just when I thought I had enough video from this tour (not to mention the great official "R30" release), this one stands out from the bunch. What I like most about this show is the amazing sound. Not only does it sound like you're in the arena, the balance of all the instruments is near perfect...among the best audience recordings I've heard. The video is fantastic as well with a maximum of 3 audience cameras providing the action onstage. Granted, you don't see all 3 cams at work all the time. However, the remaining 2 are mixed well together. If you're a fan of this tour and looking for an alterative to the official R30, this is for you! |

Project
R30: Las Vegas - Audio DVD Date: 7/17//04 Las Vegas, NV Source: Audience DAT Quality Rating: A |
Description: Here is a superb audience recording from one of the Germany shows on the R30 tour. The sound here is very full, bright and clear. Every instrument can be heard very well. Aside from some minor phase shifting, this is one hell of a show that rivals any of the best sounding shows already from this tour. |

Title:
UK
Unlimited (Manchester) Date: 9/12/04 Manchester, England Source: Audience Quality Rating: A |
Description: Here is an excellent audience recording from one of the England dates on the R30 tour. This show hangs with the best of 'em (30 Years Stronger and Project R30) so if you're looking for a great show on this tour, check this out. |

Title:
Endlessly Rocking Date: 9/24/04 Frankfurt, Germany Source: Audience Quality Rating: A- |
Description: One of the last shows on the R30 tour. The sound here is a little distant, but very consistent. I would only recommend this one for completists or if you were there. |

Title:
XM Artist Confidential Date: 8/3/04 Washington, D.C. Source: Satellite Radio Broadcast Quality Rating: A+ |
Description: Here the band is featured on the premier of a new XM satellite radio show "Artist Confidential". This show is the audio equivalent of "Inside The Actors Studio", a television show that features in-depth discussions about actors and takes questions from the audience. I wish this show were longer because at only one hour, I feel like Geddy and Alex were just getting started. They talk about recording "Feedback" and also reflect on the early days when Neil joined the band. Also included are two nice acoustic performances ("Resist" and "Heart Full Of Soul"). Overall an enjoyable show, even if it is a tad short. |

Title:
Radio City '04, Second
Night Date: 8/19/04 Radio City Music Hall, NYC Source: 3 Audience Cam Mix Quality Rating: A+/A- |
Description: This is the second night at Radio City and final night of the R30 US tour. This is not better than the 18th show (first night) but it's still pretty nice. For the most part, the 3 cam mix is excellent throughout. The main differences between this one and the first night is the audio. The audio here is kinda flat and could be more full (more bass), but it's definitely listenable. It wouldn't shock me to learn the audio is sourced from one of the camcorders, but overall, it's still pretty good. There are a few times during the show where the audio source changes, but it's always pretty good. The first night would be the one to really crank, though. |

R30: New York 01 DVD Date: 8/18/04 Radio City Music Hall, NYC Source: 3 Audience Cam Mix Video Rating: A+ Audio Rating: A+ Video Preview, Preview 2 |
Description: Yes, this has been worth the wait. Yes, it does live up to the hype. Not only is this the best DVD to emerge from the R30 tour, it's arguably the best Rush video bootleg ever. What we have here is a superb 3 cam audience mix synced to top notch DAT audio. The three cameras do an awesome job of capturing the action. You have one camera that's dead center along with one cam on each side that often go in for nice, waist level close-ups of the band. The show begins with an excellent, dead on center view of the overhead screen, so the opening album cover montage and Stiller intro are nicely captured. At times you'll think it's a professionally filmed show, that's how great the close-ups are on this. Geddy has said in interviews that playing New York City is always a tour highlight. On this night the band is playing very enthusiastically - a top notch performance. I'm watching this DVD and can't believe my eyes...this has got to be the best Rush audience boot I've ever seen! Totally off the hook, my friends! This will be a very popular and heavily traded show...an absolute must for any and all Rush fans. Enjoy!!. NOTE: There are a few versions of this show trading around. This is the best available version, spread over 3DVDs with updated DAT audio. The 2DVD version includes camcorder audio that is pretty good, but not close to this. |

Title:
West Palm Beach
'04 Date: 7/29/04 West Palm Beach, FL Source: Audience Cam Quality Rating: A |
Description: This DVD has some nice shots of the band and if you're into the second half of the show you will probably like this more. I found the first DVD to be out of sync to the point where it's annoying to watch. However, the second DVD is synced well and there's many nice closeups. The overall sound is pretty good, definitely nowhere near the Vegas or Nashville DVDs but still enjoyable. |

Title:
Red Rocks Remaster Date: 6/29/04 Denver, Colorado Source: Audience (DAT) Quality Rating: A- |
Description: If it weren't for some wind issues this would probably be among the best sounding shows to emerge from the R30 tour. The upfront mix and clarity here is, at times, startlingly superb. There is pretty much constant high end fluctuation and at times a blast of wind will send some rumble to your subwoofer. However, the new remaster of this recording has shaved off alot of rough edges. It still sounds rough around the edges, but with the overall sound beefed up the show is much easier on the ears. The opening medley and "Spirit Of Radio" sound very good here despite it's flaws. "Animate" and "Force 10" noticeably suffer from wind. Disc 3 sounds the best here and suffers little from wind. I understand the taper secured the mic under his hat rim for the first set because of winds. For the second set, the taper moved the mic to the top of his hat due to less winds. The taper, who was seated in the 20th row (left of center) missed the very beginning of "Tom Sawyer" so it's faded in just before the "His mind is not for rent" line. Overall, I wish the sound were more stable as it would have been a phenomenal listen. The remaster does give this a second wind and worth a curious listen. If you can "weather" the variable sound changes it may be for you. |

Title:
Keep On Riding, Part 3 Date: 8/21/04 Montreal, Canada Source: Audience (DAT) Quality Rating: A-/A |
Description: The show is captured fairly well here. With regards to the sound, I think it's more in line with Part 1. Geddy speaks French to the crowd and an amazing show. |
Title:
Keep On Riding, Part 2 Date: 8/19/04 Radio City Music Hall, NYC Source: Audience (DAT) Quality Rating: A- |
Description: Here is the last U.S. date of the R30 tour. The show is captured pretety well here, although the sound quality isn't quite as upfront as Part 1 (due to the location of the taper not being as close as the previous night). |
Title:
Keep On Riding, Part I
Date: 8/18/04 Radio City Music Hall, NYC Source: Audience (DAT) Quality Rating: A- |
Description: To end the U.S. leg of their R30 tour Rush played two sold-out nights at Radio City Music Hall, a venue Geddy says they haven't played in twenty years. This show is from opening night and also the first release in a series of four from a traveling fan/taper and his girlfriend having fun documenting the last 4 North American dates (two Canada dates follow the NYC shows). The sound quality here is excellent, although it could use more "presence" you can hear most everything very well. There's decent amounts of highs and nice bass so it can be cranked. Alex's rant turns into a short, impromptu, full band song about Paris Hilton. However, his solo in Xanadu is off the hook so all is forgiven. They are playing extremely well this night...I would say as good as I've ever heard them, if not better. There will be more releases from these two nights at Radio City so stay tuned. |

Title:
Boston '04 Date: 8/12/04 Boston, MA Source: Audience Quality Rating: B+/A- |
Description: This is a good sounding show from the R30 tour. The sound here is bright with not much bass. While this show doesn't have the sonic depth of, say, "Project R30" or "Girls Gone Wild" there is just enough clarity here to make it an enjoyable listen at a lower volume. |
Title:
Girls Gone Wild Date: 5/29/04 Virginia Beach, VA Source: Audience Quality Rating: A |
Description: Okay, I think we've run out of titles now. This is a really good sounding show, by the way. I wouldn't say it's essential from this tour but if you're looking for quality listens from the R30 tour you'll want this. This has a nice full, balanced sound and quite an enjoyable listen. |

Title:
69ing To Columbus Date: 6/2/04 Columbus, OH Source: Audience Quality Rating: A- |
Description: When I first read the title to this one I thought maybe a Rush fan got very lucky on the way to the show? Slow down...it's just a reference to the speed at which the tapers were hustling to the show. They even took a picture of the speedometer to make it clear this was a G Rated ride to the show (see cover artwork). The sound quality here is okay...nothing great. You can hear most everything that's going on with the band sounding just a little bit distant. Not as upfront as, say "Vegas" or "30 Years Stronger". |
Title:
A Walk In The Park Date: 6/10/04 Cleveland, OH Source: Audience Quality Rating: A- |
Description: Here is a nice audience recording from the R30 tour. There's some compression toward the mid ranges but that's okay because after hearing so many boomy recordings from this tour it's nice to hear one that has a different sound. I found that listening to this show at a lower volume was quite enjoyable. |

Title:
Project R30 DVD (2DVD) Date: 5/26/04 Nashville, TN Source: Aud Cam + Project R30 Audio Quality Rating: A |
Description: The first video boot to emerge from the R30 tour and it's from opening night as well. Sometimes you get a video boot and you like the camera shots but aren't crazy about the sound. In this case you'll love the audio and wish the camera was just a bit steadier, did more zooms...oh well. That being said, this is a pretty excellent release. The picture quality is very clear and the band can be seen in most shots. The most common angle shows the full band from a distance at dead center (reminds me of "Visual Chemistry") When available, the taper does make good use of the overhead video monitors. The audio is what shines here...a top notch audience recording that rivals most any video boot I've seen period. The audio track for this DVD is taken from the "Project R30" release. At the beginning of the show the taper remains sitting down and can only see the overhead video screen so you don't see the band for about the first 20mins. If you like the acoustic set you'll want this DVD because it's captured pretty nicely here. "Resist" uses the overhead video feed while "Heart Full Of Soul" is a nice dead on view. It's nice to finally see the show that I've been listening to since the tour started. If you love "30 Years Stronger" and want to see that show pick this one up. |

Title:
Project R30: Las Vegas Date: 07/17/04 Las Vegas, NV Source: Audience Quality Rating: A |
Description: Here's an excellent show from the 30th Anniversary Tour. If you're looking for a show that's in the same league as "30 Years Stronger" than you'll want this one. The sound here isn't quite as upfront, particularly the vocals, and there is some minor high end shifting, but overall a very enjoyable concert from the first indoor show of the tour. The band here is playing a bit better than opening night so it's definitely worth hearing how they've gelled over the first couple months of the tour. Strongly recommended for those looking for high quality shows from this tour. |
Title:
R30 Atkins Diet Date: 07/10/04 Concord, CA Source: Audience Quality Rating: B+/A- |
Description: Here's a pretty good audience show from the R30 tour. Often the band can sound a bit distant and every so often you'll hear some quick digital artifacts. However, this show does have some nice clarity in the upper ranges which makes the acoustic set really shine as well as many of Alex's soaring guitar solos. |
Title:
30th Dallas Date: 06/23/04 Dallas, TX Source: Audience Quality Rating: B+ |
Description: The quality on this show doesn't come close to "30 Years Stronger". The sound is not very upfront and clear, which gives it a very muddy sound. I would only recommend this show to completists and ticket stub holders. |
Title:
Project R30 Date: 05/26/04 Nashville, TN Source: Audience Quality Rating: A |
Description: Here's another show from opening night in Nashville. While the sound quality here is certainly good, it's not as full as "30 Years Stronger" so I wouldn't go out of my way for this one. If you already have "30 Years Stronger", you've got the best version of this show to date. |
Title:
30 Years Strong Date: 05/26/04 Nashville, TN Source: Audience (DAT) Quality Rating: A+ |
Description: This recording surfaced literally hours after the opening night show. What's amazing here is the consistent, well-balanced sound. There's plenty of bottom end and at times you would almost swear it was a soundboard the way Alex's guitars come soaring through. Neil's drums are also very much in the front. If anything is a bit low in mix it's the bass guitar, but that's not a problem overall. The Intro with Jerry Stiller is hilarious ("Lerxst, hit me baby!"). The show opens with an amazing instrumental medley where the band tears through parts of "Finding My Way", "Anthem", "Bastille Day", "Bangkok", "Cygnus" and "Hemispheres". Because it's opening night there are some flubs, most notably during "Earthshine" but any minor glitches aside, the band is very hot especially during "Subdivisions", "YYZ" and surprisingly "The Seeker" which sounds amazing here. Let me just say again how good "Seeker" is (listen to that guitar solo too!). "Crossroads" also boasts some fine soloing from Alex. The sound quality on this show sets a high standard for the shows to follow...definitely the one to beat. |
