Vapor Trails Tour
Title:
Matrix: Atlanta
'02 (2DVD) Date: 10/13/02, Atlanta, GA Label: AppleJack Studios Source: Aud Cam w//Monitor Mix Rating: A |
|
Description: I'm starting to think everyone in the Atlanta audience had a tape recorder or knew the sound guy due to the amount of both audio and video shows that have emerged from this night. Here is an awesome mixture of 3 audience cameras with a matrix of an audience recording and a scanner/monitor mix. If it weren't for the official "Rush In Rio" release, this would be a more essential show. My only complaint here is the inclusion of the audience recording in the matrix. While the bottom end adds nice depth, the highs have some flutter that are a little distracting in places. I would have preferred the audio from "One Little Victory" in it's place, or at least more prominent in the mix. A great live DVD and definitely the best video to emerge from the Vapor Trails tour. |

Title:
One Big Victory
(3CD) Date: 10/13/02, Atlanta, GA Label: Rushtrader.com Source: Scanner/Monitor Mix Audio Rating: A+ |
|
|
Description: Here is a monitor mix (mono) from the Vapor Trails tour. Monitor mixes are sent wirelessly to each band member, who listen through an earpiece. It's not clear to me if the source is directly from the soundboard or if it was intercepted by a scanner, but my best guess is the latter. While the sound is mono (indicative of scanners), the sound is consistently clear and fuller than I'd expect from a scanner source. Regardless, this is an absolutely superb recording of Rush on their Vapor Trails tour. The original source has been remastered and the new sound is very clear with nice depth and punch. While the low end isn't nearly as bottomless as "Rio" you can hear every detail here (including Geddy's impromtu cough in the first verse of "Limelight"). One of the nice things about this show is the band were playing their "B" setlist, which included "Between Sun And Moon", "Vital Signs", "Ceiling Unlimited" and the Monty Python break at end of "Big Money" (instead of The Simpsons). If you're looking for a great sounding show from this tour, definitely check this out! |

Attack Of The Meat Bees
(DVD) Date: 9/23/02, Los Angeles, CA Label: AppleJack Studios Source: Audience Video Rating: A+ Audio Rating: B+ |
|
Description: Here is a single cam from the VT tour. With the official "Rio" release out there, it's kinda hard to sit through this one honestly. I'd recommend this one for diehards or those who attended this show and need a souvenir. |

Vaporizing
Atlanta (DVD) Date: 10/13/02, Atlanta, GA Label: Frosty Source: Audience Quality Rating: A/A+ |
|
Description: I know many many months were poured into the production of this gem from the Vapor Trails tour. The 1 cam video has been synced to an equalized, high quality DAT source (mixed into 5.1 as well) to make for an excellent video boot from that tour. The camera stays focused on the band making this one of the most enjoyable video shows to emerge from the tour. Very highly recommended. |

Title:
Boston '02 (DVD) Date: 10/28/02, Boston, MA Label: None Source: Audience Quality Rating: B/B+ |
|
Description: The video for this show was originally squeezed onto one disc. The producer of this title decided to preserve that video (which was kinda shaky to begin with) by syncing it with better DAT audio and spreading it over 3DVDs. The audio and video here are pretty raw (especially the video) but the camera stays focused on the action and the audio is fairly sharp. |

Title:
Home Again
Toronto (DVD) Date: 10/22/02, Toronto, Canada Label: A Lividz Production Source: Audience Quality Rating: A+/B |
|
Description: The video here is very nice as the taper makes good use of the overhead screens and is able to stay focused on the band. The audio is just okay and doesn't sound like it was synced to another (better) source. |

Title:
A Taste Of Earthly Luminescence
(DVD) Date: 7/12/02, Mansfield, MA Label: Applejack Studios/Sirius Records Source: Audience Quality Rating: A |
|
Description: This is an incomplete show from one of the finest VT shows. Really the best part of this DVD is everything from 2112 on. If you're really into that part of the show you'll want to check this out. The filmer does a good job of staying steady on the band throughout most and the great audio track makes it even more enjoyable. |

Title:
Earthly Luminescence Date: 7/12/02, Mansfield, MA Label: None Source: Audience Quality Rating: A+ |
|
Description: If you're looking for an excellent show from the VT tour, start here. One of the best sounding audience shows to emerge from this tour, not to mention the performance is killer. They play tight and aggressive on "The Big Money", "Vital Signs", "Natural Science", and "Earthshine" especially. The sound here rivals that of any decent soundboard, it's that good. If you want to hear a show from this tour I cannot stress enough how you need to hear this...simply incredible. Play it loud! |

When The Angles Are Right Date: 10/24/02 New York, NY Source: Audience Quality Rating: A |
|
Description: I was contacted by John Amato recently, who recorded this show. His original tapes were turned into "A Gentle Hand", but John wasn't happy with the mix. He's released a new version which sounds better than the one currently circulating. "Gentle Hand" had too many highs and not enough lows. While the new mix doesn't sound nearly as bright, it does fill in the mid ranges and adds a warmth on the lower end not felt before. If you like the MSG show, you should check out this version. |

Title:
By-Tor And The Pink Wig (DVD) Date: 11/6/02 East Rutherford, NJ Source: VHS/Audience Quality Rating: A |
|
Description: This is probably the best video boot to surface so far from the highly anticpated and well received Vapor Trails tour. The cameraman knows the tunes well and that helps with the shots, which are well timed and shot very close and tight. The reason for the title of this video is found in an Easter Egg on Disc2, where you'll see a young lady appear on stage until taken away by security. The woman, incidentally, is the wife of the man who did the artwork for this set. Even if you already own the Rio DVDs, this is still a great addition to any collection. |

Title:
Atlanta Assisted Date: 10/13/02 Atlanta, GA Source: Assisted Listening Device (ALD) Quality Rating: B/B- |
|
Description: The source for this one is an assisted listening device (ALD), which is commonly used at concerts for the hearing impaired or bootleggers, as is the case here. This can often be a very good source for shows because the sound is coming right off the board mix and can have FM radio quality. However, the line feed is sometimes open to static drifts and flat sound, which is the case here, unfortunately. Don't get me wrong, this isn't unlistenable, but especially with the release of Rush In Rio, I can't see too many grabbing this one to listen to very often. The sound is very flat in spite of the many hours of work that went into equalizing the original feed to make it listenable and there are many static drifts through the 3 disc set to annoy at times. Also of note, the first few songs are missing and the set picks up near the beginning of Earthshine. I would recommend this show to completists only (or maybe if you attended the Atlanta show). |

Title:
SARS Relief Concert (DVD) Date: 07/30/03 Toronto, Canada Source: Pro Shot Video Quality Rating: A Video Preview |
|
Description: This is a video of the complete, unedited set that Rush performed at the SARS Relief concert in Toronto, Canada in 2003. From what I understand, the Rolling Stones own the footage to this show so someone from their camp must have leaked this. The quality here is perfect...must be a digital copy of the master or maybe 1 generation at most. The sound is generally excellent as well. Every so often Geddy's mike will cut out or some strange audio glitch will occur, but overall it's a very sharp mix from the board (arguably better than Rio). There were a few channels that broadcast this entire event but only two or three songs from Rush's set ever aired and anything more was simply used as brief cut-ins. So having a complete, unedited set is amazing. The band are in fine form, having been off the road since November 2002 (Rio). The set here is only 35 minutes long, which means you're pretty much treated to the essentials, including a cool, abbreviated instrumental version of the Stones' "Paint It Black" (ala 2112 style). I should also mention that this DVD also includes the complete, 12 song AC/DC set as a bonus. A must for all Rush fans. |

The Time Is Now Again Date: 08/02/02 Maryland Heights, MO Source: Audience Quality Rating: A |

Title:
Baltimore '02 (DVD Video) Date: 10/15/02 Baltimore, MD Source: Audience Quality Rating: A-/A |
|
Description: This show is a personal favorite not only because I was there, but I also got the chance to meet Geddy and Alex backstage before the show. However, I'll try not to let that affect my judgement! Actually, I don't really have to because the show speaks clearly for itself and that is...this is probably among the best video boots from the Vapor Trails tour so far. The show is complete, you can clearly see each band member through a mixture of close-ups and full body shots. The only drawbacks are that you rarely get to see the entire band performing at the same time, usually it's on one member at a time. Luckily, the guy who fimed this knew the songs well enough to catch key moments on film, such as solos or other spots worthy of seeing. By the way, the person who filmed this was in the middle, right of the arena and was able to get excellent shots. The sound is pretty average as well for an audience. The camera is probably on the band 90% of the time. There are brief moments where the camera is obstructed, but it's mostly on the action. I remember this show to be pretty incredible. Alex's guitar playing was hot, especially on "Working Man". He also cracked up Neil with his rant this evening. I would definitely recommend this show to any Rush fan. Of course, when the Rio DVD comes out, this may lose some value to certain fans. |

Scanning For Dragons -
Remaster Date: 7/20/02 Tinley Park, IL Source: Audience Quality Rating: B+/A- |
|
Description: You would think this could be a better show than it is. I mean, we have a fairly good fm scanner providing the backbone of the sound here, along with a fairly dynamic audience recording filling in the rest. However, something doesn't work well here, I believe it's the bad mix of the FM scanner. For example, we hear way too much of Alex singing. With other audience shows we heard just what the audience heard, and that was usually a mixed down Alex on vocals. With the scanner there are many times when he's just as loud as Geddy and it's distracting...definitely takes away from the song, in my opinion (especially "Driven" where Alex practically takes over the vocal in the chorus). The show does have some nice sounding moments, but overall it's a bit thinner than I had hoped. I had to turn this boot off after a while, and that's never a good sign. |

Title:
A Gentle Hand Date: 10/24/02 New York, NY Source: Audience Quality Rating: A- |
|
Description: This show has been getting rave reviews, but I wouldn't want to go too far. It's definitely an excellent recording as well as performance. The setlist is probably their best in many, many years...in this case, bolstered by the addition of "Freewill" and "The Trees". That helps make the first set a perfect mixture of most everywhere they've been for the past 20 years. I guess my main issue with the sound is the brightness...it's a very bright recording. I don't recall with any other shows having to cut my treble setting way back such as with this one. There's just enough bass to fill the spectrum nicely, but the highs often create some annoying swishyness...and that's why it gets the minus. Otherwise, this is definitely listenable and recommended for anyone that wants a slightly above average audience show from this tour. |

In The Evening Sky Date: 7/4/02 Raleigh, NC Source: Audience Quality Rating: A- |
|
Description: I went to this show and remember it being the best Rush concert I had ever seen up to that point. Or maybe that was the beer and hot July weather talking to me...I don't know, but I really enjoyed the show! Another recording from this same show is currently trading as "Independence Day". However, with this release, I'd definitely recommend upgrading to this show if you like it enough. There is definite improvement all around. Highly recommended. |

Title:
Atlanta 2003 Date: 10/13/02 Atlanta, GA Source: Audience (Chris Cage) Quality Rating: A-/A |
|
Description: Here's an excellent recording from the Vapor Trails tour. There's great amounts of bass in this one and excellent hi-hats from Neil. You can actually hear everything quite well. Geddy's voice could be a bit higher and perhaps Alex's guitar from time to time...but otherwise, this is a real gem from this tour. Definitely worth a listen...could easily become your favorite. |

Title:
Gorge Rider Date: 9/14/02 The Gorge, WA Source: Audience Quality Rating: A-/A |
|
Description: If it wasn't for the inconsistent upper frequencies this would be a much more amazing show. The band is captured here with all the instruments very much upfront. Where "Reflected Light" was strong on consistently clear, yet distant sound, "Gorge Rider" is strong with the in-your-face sound, but more typical high end flutter. The sound does improve as the show moves along, so by "2112" you aren't really noticing these problems much at all. This isn't a show to overlook and has to be one of the better ones I've heard from the "Vapor Trails" tour, especially since it's near the end of the tour and band's sound has gelled very nicely by this point. I should also note this recording doesn't have a lot of bottom end. It has just enough to give your speakers a punch but it's not booming like other shows I've heard. In my opinion this is a good thing because it brings out the mid-range details, such as the snapping of the snare drum and Geddy's vocals. Highly Recommended. |

Title:
Mile High Fiddlers Date: 8/24/02 Denver, CO Source: Audience Quality Rating: A- |
|
Description: Here's a very nice sounding audience show from their Denver stop. What I like about this one is the sound is fairly balanced. You can hear all the instruments and occasionally you'll get some high end fluctuation. It's not as "in your face" as "Gorge Rider" but overall a very enjoyable listen. |

Title:
Animals That Like The Blues Date: 9/25/02 Chula Vista, CA Source: Audience Quality Rating: B+ |
|
Description: I'm going to be a bit tougher ratings-wise on this one simply because there have been quite a few excellent shows out there and I want to distinguish better between them. I would say, the only fans that need to get this show are those that were either there or you need to collect everything. The sound is okay, a bit too distant for my linking but you can pretty much hear all that's going on. There seems to be a fair amount of high end fluctuation on this one, enough for me to drop it down a notch from most others. |

Title:
Bastille Day '02 Date: 7/14/02 Camden, NJ Source: Audience Quality Rating: A-/A |
|
Description: This is a very nice sounding audience show. The reason I slipped in the A- is because there are many times when the sound shifts for a very brief time and it distracts just a bit from the music. However, there are more high points than low points on this show and when it sounds good, it sounds great. If this had more consistent sound, I'd probably rank as among the best of the tour so far. However, don't pass this one up! The performance here is top notch! |

A Dry Kind Of Humid Date: 7/19/02 Milwaukee, WI Source: Audience Quality Rating: A- |
|
Description: After hearing so many shows from this tour it's hard for me to remember what this one sounds like! Seriously, I listened to this one last night and really enjoyed it. The sound was pleasant, could have used more clarity or been closer, but you could hear everything very well. A good average boot from this tour. As wth most shows from this tour, the band is performing at their best in a long time. |

Title:
By-Tor On The
Mountain (Titanium Edition) Date: 6/29/02 Scranton, PA Source: Audience Quality Rating: A |
|
Description: Firstly, this is the new definitive and much improved version of the original "By-Tor On The Mountain" show. This one has been remastered, which means more dynamics and overall clarity. You almost won't believe this one and the original "By-Tor" were taken from the same source. With the improved sound, this version is among the very best sounding shows of this tour (as if it wasn't already) By the long description that follows I guess you can tell I'm a bit excited about this one, eh? Among the first boots from the long-awaited "Vapor Trails" tour and it packs a punch. Included here are some songs the band haven't performed in many years ("Vital Signs", "New World Man", "Distant Early Warning"), a song they've never played live ("Between Sun And Moon"), some personal band favorites ("The Pass", "Bravado") some old fan favorites ("La Villa Strangiato", "YYZ", "Natural Science"), and some downright oldies ("Cygnus X-1", "By-Tor And The Snowdog", "Working Man"). All in all this is a very balanced setlist and the band plows right through it, giving a song like "Big Money" a harder crunch than ever before. Can I say it gets better? We're treated to the new tunes "Ghost Rider", "Secret Touch" and "Earthshine", which excite the audience like new material rarely does. Recorded from the 4th row (Alex side), this boot has a nice atmosphere in that although you can hear comments from the audience, they all "add" to the show. For instance, there's a group of guys that go fucking nuts when "Cygnus-X1" is unleashed. Next, a guys yells "Cygnus!", which admittedly made certain arm hairs stand at attention! In other words, since the crowd were into seemingly all the music played, their enthusiasm really adds to the show. It's also interesting to hear the band starting to come together again. Keep in mind, this is only their second night and when I saw them the following night in Charlotte, they were still having some problems and miscues. |

Title:
Vapor Tales (VCD) Date: 7/01/02 (airdate) Source: Much Music TV/Rolling Stone Quality Rating: A Video Preview |
|
Description: Here's an interesting "documentary" of sorts on Rush...something you don't see too often, if ever. This show aired on Canada's "Much More Music" television channel, something not many commercial satellite companies offer, making this quite rare. I say "documentary" because it doesn't really take you album-by-abum the way a Behind The Music episode would. It skips around to highlights in the band's career, often jumping back and forth between the present and past. The neat thing here is all the archival interview and performance footage of the band, some of it rarely if ever before seen. For instance, there's a nice short interview from the "Permanent Waves" era with Geddy donning the huge monacles and Alex sporting the curly blonde hair. There's footage from their Juno Hall of Fame acceptance speech and exclusive performance footage from 1976, interview footage from 1991 (including Neil) and more. Tagged onto the end of this show as a bonus is the interview with Anthony DeCurtis of Rolling Stone. Here, the band take you track by track through "Vapor Trails" and give their thoughts on the songs. The running time is just over 76min and the picture quality is excellent. This VCD will play on your CD-ROM as well as in most newer DVD Players. |
Title:
Saratoga Springs Date: 7/06/02, Saratoga Springs, NY Label: Sirius Records Source: Audience Quality Rating: A |
|
Description: I was impressed with the sound of this one. It's not as great as "Reflected Light" but it's not that far behind. The only problem here is the static pops between tracks. This is how the cd burned from using the .shn tracks...not sure if a better version exists. If anyone knows, drop me a line. One other strange thing...Disc 3 starts with the Drum Solo. Then "Resist" fades in almost as if it was supposed to be the actual start of the third disc. Aside from those strange things, this is an excellent recording from this tour. |

Title:
A Plum Of An Evening Date: 7/06/02, Burgettsville, PA Label: None (Taper) Source: Audience Quality Rating: A-/B+\ |
|
Description: The title is taken from the Geddy intro for "Between Sun And Moon" where he says, "We plum forgot this one". This is a fairly good show from the VT tour. There are some high end fluctuations that tend to get annoying and the sound is compressed to the mid-ranges. I would probably only recommend this to those that want almost every show. If you're looking for the best titles, this isn't one of them. |

Title:
Southern Trails, Pt. 1 Date: 7/01/02, Charlotte, NC Label: Digital Reproductions Source: Audience Quality Rating: A- |

Description: This is a matrix recording, meaning it is made up of multiple DAT sources. The sound here is quite good. |
|
|
Title:
Reflected Light Date: 7/12/02, Mansfield, MA Label: Digital Reproductions Source: Audience Quality Rating: A/A+ |
|
Description: Not only is this the best bootleg of the Vapor Trails tour so far, it's also one of the better audience shows to emerge from Rush period. The source here is a DAT, so quality is high. Although the band may sound a tad distant, it allows for a very balanced sound. For example, on the intro for "The Pass" you can hear Geddy plucking his bass, Neil's rimshot and Alex's slow-creeping intro. Not only are all the instruments well balanced, the high sound quality is very consistent throughout, and that makes for a very pleasant listen. The band are playing tight and very aggressive on "The Big Money", "Vital Signs", "Natural Science", "Earthshine" and many others. The sound on "2112: Overture" rivals that of any decent soundboard, it's that good. If you need a show from this tour, definitely check this one out as, so far, it's king. It's one of those shows you can play loud or low and still get the full clarity...one of my new favorites...a must for any Rush fan. For the definitive version of this show, see the "Earthly Luminescence Remaster" above. |

Title:
The Tempest Of Nissan Date: 7/09/02, Bristow, VA Label: Unknown at this time Source: Audience Quality Rating: A- |
|
Description: Here's a show I remember very well, partly because of the thunderstorm that blew through right at the opening of the show. Right as the show was beginning, this monstrous storm came through with lots of thunder, lightning and heavy rain. The fans on the lawn were soaked because the heavy rain continued non-stop for about 30 minutes. My seats were in the center orchestra section, well under the pavilion covering, and I still got wet from blowing rain. I remember at one point during "Tom Sawyer" when the rain was making it's way onstage, Geddy looked right into the oncoming rain, nodded with approval and continued on...the crowd went nuts! On this recording, when Geddy is greeting the audience and about to introduce "Earthshine" you can hear the thunder rumbling in the background. The boys were on fire this night and put on one of the best Rush shows I've ever seen. This bootleg captures that extremely well, although the first few songs are plagued by some annoying high-end phasing problems (notable especially on "Roll The Bones"). Once you get past that tune the sound dramatically improves starting with "YYZ" where there's little to no phasing and you can hear all the instruments very clearly. |

Our Ceiling Unlimited Date: 7/17/02, Toronto, Canada Label: Digital Reproductions Source: Audience Quality Rating: A- |
|
|
Description: This is taken from two audience minidisc recordings and has very well balanced sound. I don't guess the tapers were too close to the stage as it does have a sense of distance, but with this recording it's okay because you do get some nice clarity. I don't think is as sharp as "Independance Day" but it's an excellent show and definitely one to pickup if you're looking for performances from this tour. |

Title:
Trails To Toronto (Video CD) Date: 7/17/02, Toronto, Canada Label: None (Taper) Source: Audience Quality Rating: B/B+ Video Preview |
|
|
Description: Here's a souvenir from Rush's recent return to their hometown of Toronto. This one here is a mixed bag. Fortunately the camera was located in the center section of the far back orchestra. Since the camera has a very good zoom lens, that far distance doesn't really matter. The problem are the people standing in the way. There are many shots with backs of heads and sometimes shots of nothing at all, as if the taper was hiding the camera completely from view. However, when the shots are good, they're good. Sometimes the camera is focused in on the video screen instead of the live action because they couldn't get a clear shot. The solo in Dreamline is captured nicely here, as is the drum solo. If you don't mind a show that delivers as often as it distracts, you'll probably want this. If the band never releases a live DVD from this tour, at least you'll have this. |

Independence Day Date: 7/04/02, Raleigh, NC Label: Red Recordings Source: Audience Quality Rating: A |
|
|
Description: Here's an excellent audience recording from a show I attended. So, because of that, it holds a special place, but I do remember it being one of the best Rush shows I'd ever seen. What I like about this show is that the sound is well balanced, including the mid-range which was lacking on both "Hartford '02" and "By-Tor On The Mountain". This doesn't have nearly the dynamic range of the latter, but it makes up for it in the overall balance dept. In my opinion, this is one of the best Vapor Trail shows out there...get this one! This show was recorded onto MiniDisc from the 11th row, Geddy's side. |

|
Description: This is straight off the DAT Master and has some incredibly low bass. I had to remove the loudness from my stereo just to return the thunderous bass to somewhat normal. There's a good amount of highs, but could use some serious mid-section. Geddy's bass is barely audible when the band is in full swing. Otherwise, this is a very good sounding audience show with lots of highs and seemingly bottomless lows. Oh yeah, you'll find the band's last Rockline appearance as a bonus track on Disc Three. If you want the definitive version of this show, please see "By-Tor On The Mountain" (Titanium Edition). |

|
Description: This is the first boot to emerge from the "Vapor Trails" tour. Of note, it contains the first ever performance of "Between Sun And Moon" (which is dedicated to former Who bassist John Entwhistle). I should also mention it's opening night of the tour and the band gets to uncover some of those great songs from the new album including "Earthshine" and "Ceiling Unlimited", which they play every other show in rotation with "Ghost Rider" (not included here). The sound is very well balanced...not too many highs and not heavy in the bottom end either. The only drawback to this show is that it might have been recorded a few rows too far from the stage. The sound, while balanced, doesn't have the same range as "By-Tor On The Mountain". My copy has a small popping sound between tracks 1 and 2 for each of the discs for some reason. It doesn't interfere at all with the music, but I'm not sure why those pops are present in those tracks. If anyone has a similar problem and knows why, let me know. |
